A complete guide to Dawn of War II - Anniversary Edition (Classic) on Steam: what the bundle includes, how its squad-based RTS combat works, the three campaigns (Dawn of War II, Chaos Rising and Retribution), multiplayer factions and commanders, The Last Stand, and tips that apply to all of them.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Anniversary Edition (released as a free upgrade on 19 September 2024). The game is a finished "Warhammer Classics" release; check the linked sources if something differs.
What "Anniversary Edition (Classic)" means: In September 2024, for Dawn of War II's 15th anniversary, Steam owners received a free upgrade to the Anniversary Edition, which bundles Dawn of War II, Chaos Rising, Retribution and The Last Stand plus the previously paid DLC (multiplayer army skins, campaign and Last Stand wargear). The "(Classic)" label comes from the Warhammer Classics line, which presents older Warhammer games as they were, so some lore and presentation may not match current Warhammer 40,000. Separately, the first Dawn of War received a remastered Definitive Edition on 14 August 2025; that does not change this game.
| System | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cover | Heavy cover (green) and light cover (yellow) reduce incoming ranged damage; negative cover (red) makes you more vulnerable |
| Garrisons | Squads can garrison buildings for strong defensive positions; explosives and flamers clear them |
| Suppression | Sustained fire from certain weapons pins infantry; flank or use melee to break it |
| Knockback | Explosions and certain melee hits knock models down |
| Sync kills | Cinematic melee kills, especially from heroes and big units |
| Retreat | Squads return to base taking reduced damage; essential for preserving units |
| Destructible terrain | Walls and buildings can be destroyed, removing cover |
| Flamers | Ignore cover bonuses, making them strong against entrenched infantry |
You command the Blood Ravens' Force Commander and a strike force across the Aurelia sub-sector, fighting on Calderis, Typhon Primaris and Meridian. Your squad leaders are:
| Squad leader | Squad type | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Tarkus | Tactical Marines | Versatile ranged line infantry; flexible weapons |
| Avitus | Devastators | Heavy weapons and suppression |
| Thaddeus | Assault Marines | Jump pack melee |
| Cyrus | Scouts | Stealth, snipers and infiltration |
The venerable Dreadnought Davian Thule also joins the force. Squad leaders are "knocked out" rather than killed permanently and can be revived by an ally.
Campaign mechanics:
Continues the Blood Ravens' story against the Black Legion Chaos Space Marines. It adds 15 new missions, the Chaos Space Marines as a multiplayer race, and a corruption system: your choices and wargear can push squads toward corruption or redemption, which affects the ending.
A standalone expansion that lets you play the campaign as any of the six races. Each has its own protagonist:
| Race | Campaign protagonist |
|---|---|
| Space Marines | Captain Apollo Diomedes |
| Chaos Space Marines | Eliphas the Inheritor |
| Eldar | Autarch Ronahn |
| Orks | Kaptin Bluddflagg |
| Tyranids | Hive Tyrant |
| Imperial Guard | Lord General Castor |
Retribution (released 1 March 2011 on Windows, and 29 September 2016 on Linux and macOS via Feral Interactive) also added the Imperial Guard multiplayer race, limited base building in multiplayer, a Global Ability "advance" unit for each race, and moved multiplayer from Games for Windows – Live to Steamworks.
Retribution campaign tips:
Standard multiplayer is Victory Point Control:
Every race picks one of three commanders before the match:
| Race | Commanders |
|---|---|
| Space Marines | Force Commander, Apothecary, Techmarine |
| Orks | Warboss, Kommando Nob, Mekboy |
| Eldar | Farseer, Warlock, Warp Spider Exarch |
| Tyranids | Hive Tyrant, Lictor Alpha, Ravener Alpha |
| Chaos Space Marines | Chaos Lord, Chaos Sorcerer, Plague Champion |
| Imperial Guard | Lord General, Commissar Lord, Tech-Priest Enginseer |
Commander tips: support commanders (such as the Apothecary or Warlock) boost your army's sustain, while combat commanders (Force Commander, Warboss, Chaos Lord) lead melee pushes. Pick based on your army's plan, not raw strength.
The Last Stand is a three-player co-op survival mode with 20 waves of enemies. Each player controls a single hero, such as the Space Marine Captain, Eldar Farseer or Ork Mekboy; Retribution added the Imperial Guard Lord General, and downloadable heroes added a Tau commander and a Necron option. The Anniversary Edition includes these heroes and the formerly paid Last Stand wargear.
Tips:
What is the difference between Dawn of War II and Retribution? Retribution is a standalone expansion with a multi-race campaign, the Imperial Guard, and Steamworks multiplayer. The Anniversary Edition includes all of them.
Is multiplayer still active? Multiplayer runs through Steamworks since Retribution. Player numbers are much lower than at launch, so custom games and The Last Stand with friends are the easiest way to play online.
Did I get the Anniversary Edition for free? If you owned Dawn of War II on Steam, yes; it was a free upgrade in September 2024.
Can I play the campaign in co-op? Yes, the campaigns support two-player co-op.
Why is it called "Classic"? It is part of the Warhammer Classics line, which re-presents older games as they were; some lore may differ from current Warhammer 40,000.
Does it run on Linux or Mac? Yes. Feral Interactive handled the Mac and Linux versions (Retribution arrived on those platforms on 29 September 2016).
Is the Dawn of War Definitive Edition the same thing? No. The Definitive Edition (14 August 2025) is a remaster of the first Dawn of War. For Dawn of War II, the Anniversary Edition is the complete package.
Where should I start? Start with the original Dawn of War II campaign, then Chaos Rising, then Retribution.
