Warhammer 40,000: Darktide: Complete Guide

A practical guide to Fatshark's co-op action shooter Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. It covers classes, toughness and combat fundamentals, enemy priorities, difficulty and progression, the weapon crafting loop, the endgame, and what's arriving with the Depths of the Damned free update.

Researched September 2026. Current as of Hotfix 1.12.5 (August 18, 2026), with the free Depths of the Damned update (new Spillway mission, the Prophet of Decay boss, six new weapons, and a balance pass) scheduled for September 29, 2026. Live games change, so check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Stay in coherency. Toughness (your blue shield bar) regenerates only when you're near teammates. Wander off and you'll be picked apart and grabbed by disablers.
  2. Melee is your default, ranged is your scalpel. Clear hordes with melee, and use guns on shooters, specials, and elites.
  3. Kill specials on sight. Trappers, Pox Hounds, Mutants, Bombers, Flamers, and Snipers cause most wipes. Call them out and shoot them first.
  4. Dodge and block. Blocking stops melee but not everything. Dodging (movement + dodge key) avoids overheads and many attacks. Push staggers crowds.
  5. Use ammo and healing wisely. Share ammo pickups with the gunline player, and save medicae stations and med-packs for when they're really needed.
  6. Start on a comfortable difficulty. Sedition and Uprising teach the game. Move up only when you rarely go down.
  7. Level 30 is where the game opens up. Your talent tree completes, gear gets higher base ratings, and Auric and Havoc content comes into play.
  8. Check Melk and the Armoury Exchange regularly. Weekly contracts and rotating shop stock are major resource and gear sources.
  9. Tag everything. The tag key marks enemies and items for your team. It's the best communication tool in random matchmaking.

Classes

Class Playstyle Notes
Veteran Ranged specialist Best gunline class. Marks elites and specials. Strong grenade options
Zealot Melee aggressor Heals and gains toughness from killing. Holy blades and chain weapons
Psyker Warp caster Force staffs and brain-bursting abilities. Manage Peril (overheating)
Ogryn Big frontliner Huge health and stagger, shields, heavy stubbers. Protects allies
Arbitrator (Adeptus Arbites) Law-enforcer tank and controller Premium class DLC with a Cyber-Mastiff companion
Hive Scum (added December 2025) Dirty-fighting skirmisher Premium class DLC with stimms and chems
Skitarius (added June 2026) Adeptus Mechanicus soldier Premium class DLC with Mechanicus weapons. Fatshark adjusted its blitzes and melee weapons in 1.12.4

Each class has a talent tree with a blitz (grenade-type) choice, an aura, a combat ability, and keystones, plus many passive nodes. Depths of the Damned reworks the four original class trees to need fewer filler stat nodes, and it may partially reset your loadouts. Re-check your build after the update.

Enemy Priorities

Priority Enemies Why
Immediate Trapper, Pox Hound, Mutant Disable or separate a player
Very high Bomber (grenadier), Flamer, Sniper, Poxburster Area denial or burst damage
High Gunners, Reapers, Shotgunners Heavy ranged damage
Elites Crusher, Mauler, Bulwark, Rager, Scab and Dreg Vanguard Tanky melee threats. Vanguards were toned down in 1.12.4 (lower health, narrower block)
Bosses and monsters Beast of Nurgle, Plague Ogryn, Chaos Spawn, Daemonhost, Captains and Twins, and the upcoming Prophet of Decay Focus-fire and follow their mechanics

Daemonhosts: Don't wake them unless your team is ready. Sneak past with lights down, or burst one down together.

FAQ

When does Depths of the Damned release? September 29, 2026. It's a free update with the Spillway mission, the Prophet of Decay, six weapons, and a balance update.

Which class is best for beginners? Veteran (straightforward shooting) or Zealot (forgiving melee with self-sustain). Ogryn is also forgiving thanks to its huge health pool.

Do I need the DLC classes? No. The four base classes cover everything. Arbitrator, Hive Scum, and Skitarius are optional premium classes.

What does Golden Toughness do and why is it changing? It's toughness above your normal maximum, granted by some talents. Fatshark said it's been too central to builds and is reworking it with Depths of the Damned.

What level do I need for Havoc? Havoc is endgame content for max-level (30) characters. Check the in-game unlock requirements on the Mourningstar.

Is Darktide still getting updates? Yes. There were new classes, Expeditions, and live events through 2026, and Depths of the Damned lands September 29.
