# Wargame: Red Dragon: Complete Guide

A practical guide to Wargame: Red Dragon's deck building, recon, supply, combined arms and multiplayer fundamentals, written for players who have just been flattened in their first 10v10.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of patch v.131544 (12 September 2024), the follow-up to the Italy Nation Pack and the August 2024 balance update and ranked reboot. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Recon wins games.** Units can only shoot what someone on your side can see. Every push needs recon units with good optics leading it.
2. **Build a deck before you play.** Your deck is your whole army list. Start from a nation or coalition you like and copy a proven structure (below).
3. **Command vehicles capture sectors.** Command (CMD) units parked in a sector take it and earn income. Losing them loses you the map. Protect them.
4. **Supply is not optional.** Fuel, ammunition and repairs come from supply trucks, helicopters and the FOB. Units with no ammo are just targets.
5. **Pay attention to morale.** Suppressed or routed units stop fighting. Let them fall back and recover.
6. **Air power has a counter.** Every deck needs anti-air (AA), and planes that fly into AA die. Don't send expensive jets blind.
7. **Don't spam everything at the start.** Opening deployment points are limited; spend them on recon, infantry in towns, a few tanks and your command units.
8. **Use pause-free micro:** there is no pause in multiplayer, so learn the hotkeys for move, fast move, reverse, attack, unload and return fire.

## The Game at a Glance

- **Setting:** an alternate-history 1975–1991 NATO vs Warsaw Pact conflict, expanded into Asia.
- **Nations:** 17 in the base game, plus DLC nation packs.
- **Multiplayer:** up to 20 players (10v10), plus ranked 1v1 and custom lobbies.
- **Single-player:** dynamic campaigns plus skirmish against AI.
- **Successors:** Eugen's later Cold War game **WARNO** is the spiritual successor, but Red Dragon still has an active player base and got a nation pack in 2024.

### Sides and nations

| Side | Base-game nations | DLC nations |
|---|---|---|
| BLUFOR (NATO/allies) | USA, UK, France, West Germany, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Japan, South Korea, ANZAC | Netherlands (May 2016), Israel (June 2016), South Africa (Sept 2021), Italy (Aug 2024) |
| REDFOR (Pact/communist) | USSR, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, China, North Korea | Yugoslavia and Finland (Dec 2016) |

The **Italy Nation Pack** (29 August 2024) added Italy as a standalone NATO nation with 104 new units, and came with a major balance patch and a reset of the ranked leaderboards.

## Deck Building

Your deck is split into unit tabs, each with a limited number of **activation points** to spend on unit "cards".

| Tab | What goes there |
|---|---|
| LOG | Command vehicles, supply trucks, supply helicopters, FOB |
| INF | Infantry and infantry transports |
| SUP | Artillery, mortars, AA, rocket launchers |
| TNK | Main battle tanks and tank destroyers |
| REC | Recon vehicles, infantry, helicopters, planes |
| VHC | Other vehicles (IFVs, ATGM carriers, fire support) |
| HEL | Attack and transport helicopters |
| PLA | Aircraft |
| NAV | Warships (only used on naval maps) |

### Specializations

Choosing a specialization gives bonuses (more cards, availability or veterancy in some tabs) but locks out or restricts others.

| Specialization | Leans on | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| General | Everything, no bonus | Beginners, flexible play |
| Motorized | Infantry and light vehicles | Cheap spam, towns |
| Armored | Tanks | Heavy-armor pushes |
| Mechanized | IFVs and infantry | Balanced ground combat (as of the Aug 2024 patch its bonus shifted from infantry veterancy toward vehicle veterancy) |
| Support | Artillery and AA | Defensive, counter-battery heavy play |
| Marine | Amphibious units | Naval and river maps |
| Airborne | Air-mobile infantry and helicopters | Fast, fragile play |

### Eras and coalitions

- **Era limits:** decks can be restricted to older equipment (Category C and B) in exchange for extra activation points and availability. Unrestricted decks get the newest gear.
- **Coalitions:** multi-nation decks such as **Commonwealth**, **LANDJUT**, **Eurocorps**, **Scandinavia** and the **Red Dragons** get a unit pool from all members plus an availability bonus. The August 2024 patch raised several of these, for example Commonwealth and LANDJUT, and South Africa's national bonus.

### Veterancy and availability

Each card lists how many units you can buy at each veterancy level (Rookie, Trained, Hardened, Veteran, Elite) — written as something like 0/3/0/0/0. Higher veterancy means better accuracy, faster reload and better morale, but fewer units. Choose veterancy deliberately: elite recon and elite AA are often worth it; cheap spam units rarely are.

### A beginner deck template

- **LOG:** 2–3 command vehicle cards (one cheap, one armored), supply trucks, a supply helicopter, FOB.
- **INF:** 3–4 cards: cheap line infantry, one good anti-tank infantry, one elite assault squad.
- **SUP:** 1–2 AA cards (one radar/SAM, one gun or MANPADS), 1–2 artillery or mortar cards.
- **TNK:** 2–3 cards: a cost-effective mid tank and one top tank.
- **REC:** 2–3 cards: a cheap recon infantry, a recon vehicle with good optics, a recon helicopter.
- **VHC:** an ATGM carrier or IFV.
- **HEL:** 1–2 attack helicopter cards.
- **PLA:** 1 air-superiority fighter, 1 SEAD plane, 1–2 bombers or attack planes.

## Core Mechanics

### Economy: sectors and command points

- The map is divided into **sectors**. A command unit sitting inside one captures it (unless an enemy command unit contests it).
- Owned sectors add points over time, which you spend to call in more units from your reinforcement edge.
- In **Conquest**, capturing sectors also scores victory points; in **Destruction**, points come from destroying enemy units.
- Losing command units is the fastest way to lose a match. Keep them out of sight in the middle of your territory.

### Recon and optics

- Every unit has an **optics** rating. Recon units see farther and can spot stealthy units.
- Infantry in forests and buildings is hard to see; tanks in the open are easy.
- Put recon on high ground or forest edges and keep it still. Moving and firing reveal units.

### Armor, penetration and range

- **Kinetic** anti-tank rounds (tank guns) get more penetration at closer range.
- **HEAT** weapons (many missiles, rockets) have fixed penetration regardless of range.
- **Front armor** is the thickest. Flank tanks to hit side or rear armor.
- Some weapons can't fire on the move (stabilizer matters); the Sept 2024 patch fixed a unit that fired on the move despite being stationary-fire only.

### Morale and suppression

- Taking fire raises **stress**. Stressed units shoot worse; eventually they rout and become uncontrollable.
- Artillery is mainly a suppression tool. Suppress, then push.
- Units recover if left out of combat; command units nearby help.

### Supply

- Supply trucks and helicopters refuel, rearm and repair units nearby.
- The **FOB** is a stationary supply depot you place at the start; as of the August 2024 patch all FOBs have more HP (30 instead of 20).
- Keep supply behind the front and move it in behind a successful push.

### Air

- **Air-superiority fighters** kill planes. **SEAD** planes hunt radar AA. **Bombers and attack planes** kill ground targets.
- After an attack run, aircraft fly back to your map edge to rearm; they're vulnerable while exiting.
- Radar AA can be shut down or hunted by SEAD; gun AA and MANPADS are harder to see.

### Naval

On naval maps, ships control the coasts and cover amphibious landings. Anti-ship missiles, ship AA and coastal artillery all matter.

## A Typical Match Plan

1. **Opening:** place command units and FOB, send recon to forward positions, fill key towns and forests with infantry, hold a few tanks back.
2. **Early game:** fight for the contested sectors near the middle. Artillery on enemy infantry in towns; AA covers your front.
3. **Mid game:** identify where the enemy is weak (recon), mass tanks and IFVs there, suppress with artillery, push behind smoke if available.
4. **Air control:** clear their planes with fighters, then use bombers on high-value targets (artillery, tanks in the open) only after SEAD or with AA suppressed.
5. **Late game:** protect your command units, keep supply flowing, and don't overextend into unscouted forests.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **No recon** — spending all points on tanks you can't use.
- **Command units at the front.** They are the economy; they belong behind the line.
- **Sending planes into unscouted AA.** Expensive and demoralizing.
- **Leaving infantry in open fields.** Get them into cover, towns and forests.
- **Stacking every unit in one forest** where one artillery strike or bomber hits all of it.
- **Forgetting supply** in long fights, then wondering why tanks stop shooting.
- **Attacking head-on** instead of flanking with tanks.
- **Driving recon forward.** Recon should sit still and watch, not lead the charge.

## Advanced Tips

- **Use return-fire settings** on stealthy infantry and recon so they don't reveal themselves shooting at targets they can't kill.
- **Fast move** on roads for repositioning, then switch to normal move near the enemy so units react.
- **Micro your tanks:** reverse out of danger after firing instead of turning (keeps front armor forward).
- **Counter-battery:** artillery reveals itself when firing. Recon the likely positions and hit back.
- **Unit trading:** a good trade is killing more points than you lose. Track points, not kill counts.
- **Check patch notes:** unit costs and availability change (for example, the Sept 2024 patch changed a South Korean F-4D variant from 90 to 100 points and cut its availability).
- **Play ranked 1v1** after learning in team games; it teaches recon and micro fastest.

## FAQ

**Is Wargame: Red Dragon still active in 2026?**
Yes. Eugen released the Italy Nation Pack in August 2024 with a balance patch and ranked reboot, and a follow-up patch in September 2024. Lobbies and ranked are still used.

**Which DLC should I buy?**
None are required. Nation packs add nations and coalitions (Netherlands, Israel, Yugoslavia, Finland, South Africa, Italy). Buy the nations you want to play.

**What's the best deck for beginners?**
A General or Mechanized deck from a large nation such as the USA or USSR, or a well-rounded coalition. Avoid highly restricted era decks until you know the game.

**How do I win games?**
Hold more sectors (Conquest) or trade more efficiently (Destruction) — both come from good recon and not losing expensive units.

**Why can't my tanks hit anything?**
Probably no vision, bad range, or they are stressed/moving. Stop, get recon, and let them fire from stationary positions.

**Is WARNO a replacement?**
WARNO is Eugen's spiritual successor with a different system and setting (1989). Red Dragon remains its own game with naval combat and Asian theaters.
