# Total War: THREE KINGDOMS: Complete Campaign & Battle Guide

This guide covers Total War: Three Kingdoms (3K) campaign and battle fundamentals: the Romance vs. Records choice, the character (Guanxi) system, economy and building order, army composition, diplomacy, and faction starts, plus the DLC landscape and mistakes that end campaigns early.

*Researched September 2026. Current as of the final content build plus the September 17, 2026 cross-play fix patch. Creative Assembly finished content development years ago. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

> **Status:** 3K no longer gets new DLC. The last major DLC, **Fates Divided**, released in March 2021, and CA moved on to other projects (Total War: PHARAOH, WARHAMMER III, and the announced MEDIEVAL III). The game still gets occasional maintenance patches. The most recent one (September 17, 2026) fixed cross-play between platforms. The mod scene on the Steam Workshop is still very active.

## Quick Start

1. **Pick Romance mode for your first campaign.** Heroes are superhuman units, duels happen, and the game is more forgiving and cinematic. **Records** mode is the grounded, historical version.
2. **Food and public order come first.** Most early collapses happen because food runs out or counties revolt. Keep food positive and use governors in each commandery.
3. **Characters are your economy and your army.** Every general, administrator, and governor has traits, relationships, and satisfaction. Unhappy characters defect and take armies with them.
4. **Three generals per army, up to six units each.** An army can hold 3 generals, each with a 6-unit retinue, for 21 slots in total. A full army is 3 generals plus 18 units.
5. **Use the Reforms tree.** Reforms are the tech tree. Go for economy and food reforms early, then military ones.
6. **Diplomacy is powerful and the AI trades a lot.** Sell food, sign trade agreements, and use vassals and coalitions. A strong neighbor as an ally buys you years.
7. **Don't declare war on everyone.** Grow at the edges while keeping your borders peaceful. Fighting on two fronts is the most common campaign killer.
8. **Rank up your faction.** Your faction rank rises with prestige (earned from territory, wealth, and victories) and unlocks buildings, court positions, and more armies. At the top you can declare yourself Emperor.
9. **Save before any big battle or declaration.** Autosave is set to a turn cycle, so save manually often.

## Romance vs. Records

| | Romance | Records |
|---|---|---|
| Generals | Hero units that can fight entire regiments | Generals with a bodyguard unit, like classic Total War |
| Duels | Yes, heroes can challenge each other | No |
| Pace | Big swings, heroes carry battles | Grinding, formation-based fights |
| Morale and fatigue | More forgiving | Fatigue and morale matter much more |
| Best for | First campaigns, character roleplay | Historical fans, veterans who want a slower, tactical game |

Most players (and most guides) assume Romance. The advice below applies to both unless noted.

## Characters, Classes, and Guanxi

### The Five Classes
| Class | Role | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| **Commander** | Army leader with strong support abilities | Good at buffing units, recruits cavalry and more |
| **Sentinel** | Durable frontline tank | Heavy infantry and defensive units |
| **Champion** | Duelist, strong in combat | Shock infantry and elite fighters |
| **Vanguard** | Fast cavalry hero | Shock cavalry and mounted units |
| **Strategist** | Support and ranged buffs | Ranged units and siege equipment |

Each class has its own **retinue** (the unit types it can recruit). To field a good army, mix classes: a Sentinel for infantry, a Vanguard for cavalry, a Strategist or Commander for ranged and support.

### Satisfaction and Relationships
- Characters have **satisfaction** driven by traits (Ambitious, Loyal, Greedy, etc.), rank, pay, and how you treat them. Low satisfaction means desertion or rebellion.
- **Relationships** between characters grow when they fight together or share an army. Positive ones give buffs, and rivals cause problems. Keep friends in the same army.
- **Promotions** in your court (Ministers, Administrators) raise satisfaction and give faction-wide bonuses.
- **Ancillaries** (weapons, armor, mounts, followers) have legendary versions tied to historical heroes. Giving the right item to the right hero is a massive power boost.

### Spies
Undercover spies let you infiltrate another faction, reveal armies, steal gold, or even cause a character to defect with their army. Some spies can rise into positions inside rival courts. It takes time but can change the whole campaign.

## Economy and Buildings

### Commanderies and Counties
Each **commandery** has a main city and several **counties** (resource buildings like farms, mines, trade ports, and forests). Counties add food, income, and supplies.

### Building Chains
| Chain | Purpose |
|---|---|
| **Peasantry / Farmland** | Food and population growth |
| **Industry** | High income but lowers public order |
| **Commerce** | Income, trade, and public order |
| **Military** | Recruitment, replenishment, and unit upgrades |

### Rules of Thumb
- **Food surplus first.** Negative food starves the faction and lowers public order everywhere.
- **Assign a governor** to each commandery. They give a big bonus and stop some unrest.
- **Balance industry with commerce or public-order buildings.** Industry money hurts stability.
- **Trade agreements** are easy money. Sign them with anyone who'll accept.
- **Don't overbuild military buildings.** Build one or two military hubs close to your front, not one everywhere.

---

## Armies and Battles

### Army Structure
- **Up to 3 generals** in an army, each leading **up to 6 units**.
- Generals' classes decide which units their retinue can recruit.
- **Supplies**: armies in enemy territory drain supplies, and running out causes attrition. Stay near your territory or friendly lands.

### A Reliable Early Composition (Romance)
| Slot | Units |
|---|---|
| Sentinel general | Spear or sword infantry to hold the line |
| Strategist general | Archers or crossbows for ranged damage |
| Vanguard general | Cavalry to flank and chase routing units |

Swap in more infantry for sieges and more cavalry for open-field fights.

### Battle Basics
- **Hold with spears, flank with cavalry.** Most AI armies charge head-on.
- **Target enemy generals.** Routing or killing a general causes heavy morale loss across his retinue.
- **Keep your heroes out of blobs.** In Romance, heroes are strong but get surrounded and killed. Use their abilities, then pull them out.
- **Duels** (Romance): winning a duel against a key enemy hero can break their army. Only challenge if your hero clearly outclasses them.
- **Sieges**: build rams or ladders, attack from several walls, and bring towers down with ranged units before you commit.

---

## Diplomacy

- **Coalitions** are loose defensive groups. **Alliances** are the next level up (military and more). You can build a coalition first, then deepen it.
- **Vassals** pay tribute and fight your enemies. Turning a weak neighbor into a vassal instead of conquering them saves armies.
- **The AI loves food and trade.** Selling food for gold or treaties is a good way to fix relations.
- **Credibility and reputation** affect how others see you. Breaking treaties has consequences.

### Proclaiming Emperor
Once you've gained enough prestige you can declare yourself Emperor. That moves the campaign into its endgame: to win you must eliminate or vassalize the other powers, including rival emperors, and unify China. It's a big shift, so be ready with a strong economy and several armies.

## Faction Notes

The base game includes these warlords, among others: **Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Jian, Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, Ma Teng, Kong Rong, Gongsun Zan, Liu Biao**, and the bandit leaders **Zheng Jiang** and **Zhang Yan**.

| Faction | Beginner-friendliness | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| **Cao Cao** | Good | Strong generals and a strong diplomatic mechanic (Credibility) that rewards scheming. A classic first choice |
| **Liu Bei** | Moderate | Iconic sworn brothers (Guan Yu, Zhang Fei). Starts small and needs careful early expansion |
| **Sun Jian** | Good | Strong family of generals and a safer southern start |
| **Yuan Shao** | Good | A big, rich faction. A fine "easy mode" start |
| **Gongsun Zan** | Moderate | Cavalry-focused and far north |
| **Ma Teng** | Moderate | Western frontier cavalry faction |
| **Kong Rong / Liu Biao** | Moderate to hard | Scholarly factions with a different, more diplomatic style |
| **Zheng Jiang / Zhang Yan** | Hard | Bandit factions with a very different playstyle |

## DLC Guide

| DLC | Type | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| **Yellow Turban Rebellion** (May 2019) | Faction pack | Three playable Yellow Turban leaders with their own mechanics |
| **Reign of Blood** (June 2019) | Blood pack | Gore and dismemberment effects |
| **Eight Princes** (Aug 2019) | Chapter pack | A separate campaign set about a century later, during the War of the Eight Princes |
| **Mandate of Heaven** (Jan 2020) | Chapter pack | Earlier 182 CE start with the Yellow Turban uprising |
| **A World Betrayed** (Mar 2020) | Chapter pack | 194 CE start with Lu Bu and Sun Ce as leaders |
| **The Furious Wild** (Sep 2020) | Faction pack | Expands the southwest map and adds the Nanman tribes as playable factions |
| **Fates Divided** (Mar 2021) | Chapter pack | 200 CE start around the rivalry between Cao Cao and Yuan Shao |
| **Tao Qian, White Tiger Yan, Shi Xie** (2020) | Free lords | Free playable warlords |

For a first purchase, most players suggest **A World Betrayed** (Lu Bu is a lot of fun), **Mandate of Heaven**, and **The Furious Wild**. Exact start dates and roster details are on each DLC's store page.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Running out of food.** Check your food surplus every few turns.
- **Letting characters sit unhappy.** Promote, pay, or give items before they defect.
- **Wars on multiple fronts.** Fight one enemy at a time and keep the others busy with deals.
- **Ignoring supplies.** Long campaigns deep into enemy lands lead to attrition.
- **Spreading armies thin.** A few full armies are better than many half-stacks.
- **Ignoring the Reforms tree.** Early economic reforms have a big effect on your income.
- **Throwing heroes into blobs in Romance.** Even a legendary hero dies if surrounded.

---

## Advanced Tips

- **Trade heavily with the AI** for gold and food. It's often happy to overpay.
- **Use spies to "steal" armies.** A well-placed spy who defects with a general's army is a huge swing.
- **Group friends in the same army.** Positive relationship bonuses stack up over time.
- **Stack ancillaries on your key heroes.** Legendary weapons and mounts are some of the strongest items in the game.
- **Set up vassals** instead of conquering every weak neighbor.
- **Use mods.** Popular community mods add unit variety, UI improvements, and campaign rebalances. Check update dates, because the game hasn't had a major content patch in years.
