Toribash: Beginner-to-Advanced Guide

This guide covers how Toribash's turn-based joint system works, how to build your first real moves, the popular mods, ranked play under the 2025 ranking system, Qi and belts, the Battle Pass, and the economy.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Toribash 5.76 (29 September 2025), the October 2025 ranking-system update, and Battle Pass: Tangerine (4 October 2025), the latest official Steam posts available when researched; newer seasons may be live. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. It's turn-based. Both fighters set their joints, the physics runs for a few frames, then it pauses and you set joints again. Nothing depends on reflexes. Planning is everything.
  2. You control joints, not moves. Every joint can be put into one of four states (for most joints: extend, contract, hold, relax). A "move" is simply a pattern of joint states over several turns.
  3. Use the ghost. The translucent preview shows where your body will go if nothing interferes. Tweak joints until the ghost does what you want before ending the turn.
  4. Hold keeps you stable, relax makes you floppy. New players who leave joints relaxed collapse. Put joints in hold when you want them to stay put.
  5. Learn one mod at a time. Rooms run different mods (rules, arenas, and body setups). Aikido-style dojos and Judo are the classic starting points.
  6. Save replays of moves you like and study good players' replays. Openers (the first turns) are reusable, so build a small library of them.
  7. Play online to earn Qi and Battle Pass XP. Multiplayer, Blind Fight, tournaments, events, and quests all count.
  8. Toribash is free-to-play. Toricredits (earned) and Shiai Tokens (premium) buy cosmetics. Nothing you buy makes you stronger.

Core Mechanics

Joints and states

The body has joints for the neck, chest, lumbar, abs, pecs, shoulders, elbows, wrists, glutes, hips, knees, and ankles, plus two hands that can grab.

State What it does
Extend Pushes the joint open (straightens)
Contract Pulls the joint closed (bends)
Hold Locks the joint at its current angle
Relax Goes limp. Moves only from outside forces
Grab (hands) Hand sticks to whatever it touches, including the opponent. Ungrab to release

Some joints use directional names instead of extend/contract. Shoulders raise and lower, and the torso joints (chest, lumbar) use left/right-style states, but the idea is the same: two opposite powered directions plus hold and relax. Hover a joint to see its exact state names in your client.

Controls

Key bindings have changed over the years and can be customized, so the in-game tutorial and options are the most reliable reference for your version.

Your First Moves

Beginner opener ideas

  1. Stable stance: Set the knees and hips to hold, contract the abs slightly to keep your balance, and keep the hands ready to grab.
  2. Kick: Extend one hip forward and extend that knee, keep the standing leg on hold, and lean the chest to keep balance.
  3. Punch: Raise the shoulder, extend the elbow toward the target, and rotate the chest into it for speed.
  4. Grab-and-throw (Judo-style): Get both hands onto the opponent and grab, then rotate the chest and lumbar while pulling with the shoulders and elbows.

Building a move step by step

Tip: Toribash rewards speed over contact. A fast-moving foot does much more damage than a slow push.

Saving and reusing moves (MoveMemory)

The client includes MoveMemory, a tool for recording a sequence of joint states and replaying it on later turns or in later matches. It is the practical way to build the opener library recommended below: record an opener once, test it against a few different opponent reactions, then keep only the versions that land. Nabi fixed several MoveMemory bugs in 5.75 (steps being skipped when the same move ran for multiple players at once, and tooltips staying open), so update the client if a saved move behaves oddly.

Mods and Rooms

A mod sets the physics, arena, body rules, and DQ settings. Popular types of rooms:

Mod type What it is Good for
Aikido / dojo mods Classic stand-up with DQ and a ring Learning fundamentals
Judo Grabs and throws Learning grab mechanics
Parkour / single-player Movement challenges, no opponent Learning body control
Custom and fun mods Everything from weapons to strange arenas Variety

Toribash's built-in Mod Maker lets you create environments and rules. Version 5.76 added a button to revert a mod to its default.

Ranked Play (Ranking System Update, October 2025)

Nabi overhauled ranking to give every player a designated rank again and to turn the most popular rooms into ranked rooms.

Tier Elo
Elo Hell 0 to 1560
Bronze 1560 to 1600
Silver 1600 to 1635
Gold 1635 to 1665
Platinum 1665 to 1690
Diamond 1690+

Each tier also comes with a dynamic profile backdrop. Top players earn Toricredits and Shiai Tokens. Preliminary rewards (paid after months one and two of each season) at launch of the system were:

Global rank Preliminary reward
#1 100,000 Toricredits + 10 Shiai Tokens
#2 50,000 Toricredits + 8 Shiai Tokens
#3 35,000 Toricredits + 6 Shiai Tokens
#4 and below Smaller tiered rewards (see the announcement)

Reward tables can be revised between seasons, so check the latest ranking post before grinding for a specific placement.

FAQ

Is Toribash free? Yes. It's free-to-play on Steam, with optional purchases for cosmetics and Battle Pass Premium.

Is it pay-to-win? No. Purchases are cosmetic, such as colors, textures, 3D items, flames, and profile backgrounds.

How do I get ranked? Play 10 ranked games in public ranked lobbies. After those qualification games you're placed into a tier (Elo Hell to Diamond) by Elo. Global ranking resets every three months, and mod rankings are permanent.

What is Battle Pass Rewind? Since 5.76, owning Premium for a season lets you keep progressing it after it ends by setting it as your Rewind season. XP earned in the current season applies to it too.

What's the best mod for beginners? A standard dojo mod (Aikido-style) to learn balance and striking, then Judo to learn grabs.

Is Battle Pass Tangerine still the current season? It was the newest season in the official Steam posts we could check (4 October 2025). Seasons have historically rotated every one to two months, so look at the in-game Battle Pass screen or the Steam news page for the live season.

Does Toribash run on Mac and Linux? Yes. The Steam version supports macOS and Linux, and recent updates include macOS- and Linux-specific fixes.
