Torchlight II: Complete Guide

A complete guide to Torchlight II: the four classes and their skill trees, stat priorities, build archetypes, the acts, loot systems (enchanting, socketing, transmuting, gambling), pets and fishing, endgame (New Game Plus and Mapworks), mods, and the September 2026 change to online multiplayer.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the September 21, 2026 client update and online server migration (TapTap.io accounts). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Online multiplayer changed in September 2026. Runic's September 15 notice scheduled a client update and online server migration for 8:00 PM PDT on September 21, 2026. Online play now needs a TapTap.io account and a new display name, older clients can no longer reach online multiplayer, and account and friends data were reset. The notice only covers online services; single-player is not part of the change. The Arc Games website version is discontinued; owners can request one Steam key for the standard edition through the official Runic Discord with proof of purchase.

Quick Start

  1. Pick a class you like the feel of. All four classes can clear everything; each has three skill trees.
  2. Put stat points mostly into your damage stat plus Vitality. Strength, Dexterity and Focus each help different styles.
  3. Respecs are limited. By default you can only refund your last three skill points, so plan your build rather than spreading points.
  4. Use the pet. Your pet fights, carries loot, and runs to town to sell junk. Feed it fish to transform it (some fish transformations are temporary, others permanent).
  5. Socket everything. Gems and embers add large bonuses; socketed gear is often better than higher-level empty gear.
  6. Enchant good items. Enchanters add random bonuses; stop before you risk wiping them on items you care about.
  7. Set difficulty honestly. Casual, Normal, Veteran and Elite exist; Veteran is the popular first-run pick for experienced ARPG players.
  8. Hardcore is permanent death. Only choose it if you accept losing the character.
  9. Finish the story, then choose NG+ or Mapworks. Both are endgame paths.
  10. Mods are huge. Steam Workshop is supported, and GUTS lets you make your own.

Classes and Skill Trees

Class Trees Charge bar effect Playstyle
Engineer Construction, Blitz, Aegis Charge powers up certain skills Heavy melee or bots/turrets; tanky
Berserker Hunter, Shadowbind, Tundra Frenzy with guaranteed critical hits Fast melee, wolf and frost themes
Embermage Inferno, Frost, Storm Clarity with free spells Elemental caster
Outlander Lore, Warfare, Sigil Speed and damage buff Ranged guns and bows, glaives

Skill Ranks and Tiers

Skills go up to rank 15. Every fifth rank adds a tier bonus, so concentrating points into fewer skills is stronger than spreading them. Passive skills in each tree are often worth maxing.

Stats

Stat Main effect
Strength Weapon damage and critical damage
Dexterity Critical chance, dodge, and some gear requirements
Focus Elemental damage, mana, and spell damage
Vitality Health and armor

Rules of thumb:

Build Archetypes

Build Class Key skills Notes
Two-hander Tank Engineer Construction tree (Emberquake, Flame Hammer style skills), Aegis defenses Very forgiving; great first character
Bot Army Engineer Construction tree bots and Healing Bot Lets minions tank
Wolf Berserker Berserker Hunter and Shadowbind skills Fast melee and life steal
Frost Berserker Berserker Tundra tree Crowd control and heavy damage
Prismatic Caster Embermage Inferno and Frost staples, Prismatic Bolt Classic elemental mage
Storm Mage Embermage Storm tree Shock chains and control
Glaive Thrower Outlander Glaive Throw, Warfare passives Bouncing projectile clears groups
Gunslinger Outlander Rapid Fire, Venomous Hail, Sigil utility High single-target damage

Look up the exact current skill names in-game; the ideas above are the common, proven directions.

Acts and Story

Act Region Notes
Act I Estherian Steppes Mountains and dungeons; learn your build
Act II Mana Wastes Desert; difficulty ramps up
Act III Grunnheim Haunted forest and ancient dwarven ruins
Epilogue Final area Confrontation with the Alchemist, corrupted by the Ember Blight

Towns have vendors, stash, the enchanter, transmuter, gambler and fishing spots. Side quests give good loot and experience; do most of them on your first run.

Loot Systems

Rarity

Items range from normal to magic, rare, unique and set items. Set items give bonuses for wearing multiple pieces.

Socketing and Embers

Enchanting

Transmuting

Gambling

Pets and Fishing

Endgame

New Game Plus

After finishing the campaign, start again with the same character. NG+ is harder, with better drops, and you keep your skills, gold and gear.

Mapworks

The Mapworks vendor sells maps to randomized dungeons with modifiers. It is the main endgame loop for farming high-level loot.

Hardcore

Death deletes the character permanently. Good builds prioritize defense, life leech and health regeneration.
