A spoiler-light companion to Freebird Games' story adventure: which version to play (original or the 2025 16:9 remaster), how memento links and puzzles work, a chapter-by-chapter outline, the single achievement, the free minisodes, and where the series goes next.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the 16:9 remaster (Serenity Forge, Steam release 28 May 2025, last patched October 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Spoiler policy: This guide explains mechanics and structure and keeps story details to the setup. It's a game best experienced blind, so the "why" of Johnny's wish is never spelled out here.
Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts work for Sigmund Corp., which gives dying patients a second life, but only inside their memories. The doctors travel backward through a person's memories and implant a new "life" that fulfills a wish, and the patient dies believing it. Their newest patient, Johnny, an elderly man in a house beside a lighthouse, wants to go to the moon. He can't say why.
There's no combat and no fail state. It's a short, story-driven adventure (around four hours) with light puzzles and an acclaimed soundtrack. The game describes itself as "an espresso execution with zero filler."
Release history: Windows on 1 November 2011 (Steam in September 2012), Mac and Linux in January 2014, mobile in May 2017, Nintendo Switch in January 2020, and the 16:9 remaster on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in October 2024 before it reached Steam in May 2025.
| Version | What's different | How to launch |
|---|---|---|
| 16:9 remaster (Serenity Forge, 2025) | Widescreen presentation matching the console versions, extra localizations for the minisodes, and ongoing fixes (an achievement unlock bug, an Act III softlock, a Unity security update) | Select it in Steam's launch options when you press Play |
| Original version | The 2011 RPG Maker release in 4:3 | Also available in the launch options |
Recommendation: Play the remaster for a first run. The original is there for purists and very low-end PCs (the store's minimum spec lists Windows 98 through 11, a Pentium III 800 MHz and 512 MB of RAM). Freebird notes the remaster should run on Steam Deck in compatibility mode.
The story moves backward through Johnny's life, with the doctors' present-day scenes in between.
Expect the most emotional stretch in the last hour, and don't skip the credits.
To the Moon has one Steam achievement, Wish Granted, earned by finishing the story. About 28% of Steam players have it (27.7% on the global stats page). If it didn't unlock in the 16:9 remaster around June 2025, a patch that month fixed the unlock bug, so replaying the ending should trigger it.
| Title | Year | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| To the Moon | 2011 (Steam 2012) | Johnny's story |
| Sigmund Minisode 1 and 2 | 31 Dec 2013 and 18 Feb 2015 | Free holiday specials with Eva and Neil (the first is a holiday party at their Sigmund Corp. office). They add character context for the later games. Free on Steam |
| A Bird Story | 2014 | A short, wordless interlude that ties into Finding Paradise |
| Finding Paradise | 2017 | The sequel: a new patient, same doctors. A 16:9 "remaster+" launched 8 October 2025 as a free update for Steam owners, plus console ports |
| Impostor Factory | 2021 | The third main entry |
| The Last Hour of an Epic TO THE MOON RPG | Upcoming | Freebird calls it the conclusion of the series, complementing the Beach Episode. A 25 June 2026 Steam post said the trailer would drop "next Tuesday" (30 June 2026). No release date in the sources used here |
Recommended order: To the Moon, the minisodes, A Bird Story, Finding Paradise, Impostor Factory, then the Beach Episode before the upcoming finale.
Related extras on Steam include the soundtrack, the comic collections "Paper Memories - Comics from To the Moon & Finding Paradise" and "[Platypus Comic Strips+] To the Moon, too!", the To the Moon Illustrated Works art book (art by Maki, digital since June 2026) and the Bestest Memories Print & Play Tabletop Game (previously only attached to the Beach Episode). An animated film adaptation is also in production: Wikipedia describes it as partially scripted and supervised by Kan Gao, with Japanese companies leading production and China's Ultron Event Horizon funding it.
