theHunter Classic: Final-Season Guide (Shutdown November 11, 2026)

This guide covers how theHunter Classic works, how to get the most out of its last weeks, and where to go once the servers switch off.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the shutdown announcement (July 9, 2026) and Steam delisting (August 19, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status notice: On July 9, 2026, Expansive Worlds announced that theHunter Classic will shut down permanently on November 11, 2026. The game was removed from the Steam Store on August 19, 2026. If you already own it, you can keep playing until November 11. The game has always been online-only, so it will not work at all after that date, and player accounts and their data go with it. Old disc copies will not work either, so do not pay anyone for one.

A few other points from the developers:

Quick Start

  1. Spend your em$ and gm$ now. You cannot buy new currency anymore, and whatever you have left disappears on November 11. With most items at 95% off, this is the cheapest the game has ever been.
  2. Grab the Wolfsbane weapons while they cost nothing, so you are ready for the werewolf event from October 28.
  3. Always check the wind. Your scent is the main thing that gives you away. Keep the wind in your face or blowing across you, never at your back toward the animal.
  4. Move slowly. Walking and crouching make much less noise than running. Most failed stalks happen because the player ran the last 200 meters.
  5. Use the Huntermate. It identifies tracks, droppings, beds and calls, and it logs the trail so you can follow one animal instead of guessing.
  6. Use a caliber that suits the animal. Small rounds on big game wound animals and lose them. Big rounds on small game ruin the trophy score.
  7. Aim for the vitals. Heart and lung shots behind the front shoulder give clean kills and short blood trails.
  8. Screenshot your best trophies and save them locally. Your Trophy Lodge goes away with the servers.

How the Game Works

Currencies

Currency How you get it Notes (as of July 2026)
gm$ Missions, hunting, competitions The earnable currency
em$ Used to be bought with real money; still paid out as competition prizes Can no longer be purchased; spend what you have before November 11

Weapons, ammo, callers, scents, tents, stands and dogs are all bought in the in-game store. With the 95% discount you can afford gear you would normally have saved for weeks to buy.

Reserves

The store page lists 12 environments and 45 species. These are the reserves:

Every reserve has its own species mix, terrain and missions. The store page highlights some of the extremes: subarctic Alaska, the swamps of Louisiana, the Australian outback and the Austrian Alps. The official species list ranges from ducks, ptarmigan and rabbits up to bison, moose, polar bear and water buffalo. There is also the Halloween-only werewolf.

Species groups at a glance

Group Examples from the official list Typical approach
Small game Cottontail Rabbit, European Rabbit, Snowshoe Hare Small calibers or shotgun; they flush fast, so be patient
Birds and waterfowl Mallard, Pintail, Gadwall, Canada Goose, Turkey, Pheasant, ptarmigan Shotgun with birdshot; decoys and calls for waterfowl
Deer Whitetail, Mule, Blacktail, Sitka, Roe, Red, Rusa, Sambar Medium rifle calibers; calling and stalking work well
Large ungulates Moose, Elk (Rocky Mountain and Roosevelt), Bison, Water Buffalo, Banteng Heavy rifle calibers; precise vitals shots
Mountain game Alpine Ibex, Bighorn Sheep, Dall Sheep, Feral Goat Long shots over rough ground; glass from ridgelines
Predators Grey Wolf, Coyote, Red Fox, Arctic Fox, Bobcat Predator calls; stay hidden; they are sharp-eyed
Bears Black, Brown, Grizzly, Polar Heavy calibers only; do not let them close the distance

Hunting Fundamentals

Scent and wind

Animals smell you long before they see you. The game shows the wind direction. Plan your approach so your scent blows away from where you think the animal is. Scent eliminator products reduce your scent, but they do not replace playing the wind.

Noise and movement

Visibility

Break up your outline. Stay below ridgelines, move through cover, and use shade. Camouflage clothing helps, but it will not save you if you stand on a skyline.

Tracking with the Huntermate

Tracks, droppings, beds and blood all show up as clues. Clues that are close together and fresh mean the animal is nearby. After a shot:

  1. Mark the place where the animal was standing.
  2. Look for blood and follow it. Bright, frothy blood usually means a lung hit.
  3. Do not rush. A wounded animal pushed hard can run a long way.

Choosing Weapons (General Rules)

theHunter Classic has a wide range of rifles, shotguns, handguns, bows and crossbows. The store announcements from mid-2026 mention items like .270 bolt-action rifles, .30-30 lever-action rifles, .223 rifles, .17 HMR lever-action rifles, .45-70 rifles, a 9.3x74R over/under break-action rifle, a 10 GA lever-action shotgun, a 12 GA pump-action shotgun and a .357 revolver. General matching rules:

Target size Good choices Why
Rabbits, hares, small predators Small calibers such as .17 HMR or .223 Clean kills without destroying small game
Birds and waterfowl Shotguns (12 GA, 10 GA) with birdshot You need a spread for flying and small targets
Deer-sized game Medium calibers such as .270 or .30-30 Enough energy for vitals shots at normal ranges
Elk, moose, bison, bears Heavy calibers such as .45-70 or 9.3x74R Deep penetration for large bodies
Challenge hunts Handguns, bows, crossbows Short range only. Get close with good fieldcraft

With most of the store at 95% off, this is a good time to build a full kit that covers every species group.
