# theHunter Classic: Final-Season Guide (Shutdown November 11, 2026)

This guide covers how theHunter Classic works, how to get the most out of its last weeks, and where to go once the servers switch off.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the shutdown announcement (July 9, 2026) and Steam delisting (August 19, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

> **Status notice:** On **July 9, 2026**, Expansive Worlds announced that theHunter Classic will **shut down permanently on November 11, 2026**. The game was **removed from the Steam Store on August 19, 2026**. If you already own it, you can keep playing until November 11. The game has always been online-only, so it will not work at all after that date, and player accounts and their data go with it. Old disc copies will not work either, so do not pay anyone for one.

## Key Dates (from the official announcements)

| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| July 9, 2026 | Shutdown announced; purchasing new in-game currency disabled |
| From July 10, 2026 | Most store items discounted 95% until the end |
| August 19, 2026 | Removed from the Steam Store (existing owners keep access) |
| October 9, 2026 | Community League ends (no new league will start) |
| October 28 – November 11, 2026 | Final Halloween werewolf event |
| November 10, 2026 | Last regular competitions end |
| November 11, 2026 | Servers shut down; the game stops working |

A few other points from the developers:

- **Daily Missions** keep running until the end.
- **Wolfsbane weapons** (the Halloween werewolf guns) are **100% off**, so everyone can join the final werewolf hunt.
- Some items stay at normal price: things that have caused store problems before, and items that have never been on sale.
- **Download your screenshots** from the in-game gallery or Discord before November 11. The developers have said they cannot save anything for you.
- **Trophy of the Week** moves to the official Discord, and there is an external competition site (thc-comps.com) with weekly em$ prizes.

## Quick Start

1. **Spend your em$ and gm$ now.** You cannot buy new currency anymore, and whatever you have left disappears on November 11. With most items at 95% off, this is the cheapest the game has ever been.
2. **Grab the Wolfsbane weapons** while they cost nothing, so you are ready for the werewolf event from October 28.
3. **Always check the wind.** Your scent is the main thing that gives you away. Keep the wind in your face or blowing across you, never at your back toward the animal.
4. **Move slowly.** Walking and crouching make much less noise than running. Most failed stalks happen because the player ran the last 200 meters.
5. **Use the Huntermate.** It identifies tracks, droppings, beds and calls, and it logs the trail so you can follow one animal instead of guessing.
6. **Use a caliber that suits the animal.** Small rounds on big game wound animals and lose them. Big rounds on small game ruin the trophy score.
7. **Aim for the vitals.** Heart and lung shots behind the front shoulder give clean kills and short blood trails.
8. **Screenshot your best trophies** and save them locally. Your Trophy Lodge goes away with the servers.

## How the Game Works

### Currencies

| Currency | How you get it | Notes (as of July 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| gm$ | Missions, hunting, competitions | The earnable currency |
| em$ | Used to be bought with real money; still paid out as competition prizes | Can no longer be purchased; spend what you have before November 11 |

Weapons, ammo, callers, scents, tents, stands and dogs are all bought in the in-game store. With the 95% discount you can afford gear you would normally have saved for weeks to buy.

### Reserves

The store page lists **12 environments** and **45 species**. These are the reserves:

- Logger's Point
- Whitehart Island
- Settler Creeks
- Redfeather Falls
- Hemmeldal
- Rougarou Bayou
- Val-des-Bois
- Bushrangers Run
- Whiterime Ridge
- Timbergold Trails
- Piccabeen Bay
- Hirschfelden

Every reserve has its own species mix, terrain and missions. The store page highlights some of the extremes: subarctic Alaska, the swamps of Louisiana, the Australian outback and the Austrian Alps. The official species list ranges from ducks, ptarmigan and rabbits up to bison, moose, polar bear and water buffalo. There is also the Halloween-only **werewolf**.

### Species groups at a glance

| Group | Examples from the official list | Typical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Small game | Cottontail Rabbit, European Rabbit, Snowshoe Hare | Small calibers or shotgun; they flush fast, so be patient |
| Birds and waterfowl | Mallard, Pintail, Gadwall, Canada Goose, Turkey, Pheasant, ptarmigan | Shotgun with birdshot; decoys and calls for waterfowl |
| Deer | Whitetail, Mule, Blacktail, Sitka, Roe, Red, Rusa, Sambar | Medium rifle calibers; calling and stalking work well |
| Large ungulates | Moose, Elk (Rocky Mountain and Roosevelt), Bison, Water Buffalo, Banteng | Heavy rifle calibers; precise vitals shots |
| Mountain game | Alpine Ibex, Bighorn Sheep, Dall Sheep, Feral Goat | Long shots over rough ground; glass from ridgelines |
| Predators | Grey Wolf, Coyote, Red Fox, Arctic Fox, Bobcat | Predator calls; stay hidden; they are sharp-eyed |
| Bears | Black, Brown, Grizzly, Polar | Heavy calibers only; do not let them close the distance |

## Hunting Fundamentals

### Scent and wind

Animals smell you long before they see you. The game shows the wind direction. Plan your approach so your scent blows away from where you think the animal is. Scent eliminator products reduce your scent, but they do not replace playing the wind.

### Noise and movement

- Running is loud, walking is quieter, and crouching or crawling is quietest.
- Dense brush and water are noisy to walk through. Trails and open ground are quieter.
- If an animal looks your way or stops feeding, freeze until it calms down.

### Visibility

Break up your outline. Stay below ridgelines, move through cover, and use shade. Camouflage clothing helps, but it will not save you if you stand on a skyline.

### Tracking with the Huntermate

Tracks, droppings, beds and blood all show up as clues. Clues that are close together and fresh mean the animal is nearby. After a shot:

1. Mark the place where the animal was standing.
2. Look for blood and follow it. Bright, frothy blood usually means a lung hit.
3. Do not rush. A wounded animal pushed hard can run a long way.

### Shot placement

- **Broadside:** aim just behind the front leg, a third of the way up the body.
- **Quartering away:** angle the shot toward the far front shoulder.
- **Facing you:** waiting is usually the better choice. If you must take the shot, aim center chest.
- Avoid shots at running animals, especially at long range.

### Callers, lures and stands

- **Callers** bring animals toward you. Call, then wait several minutes. Animals often come in slowly and from downwind.
- **Tree stands and ground blinds** hide your movement and help keep your scent above the animals.
- **Tents** give you a spawn point inside a reserve so you do not have to walk in from the lodge every time.
- **Dogs** (pointers and retrievers) help with upland birds and waterfowl.

## Choosing Weapons (General Rules)

theHunter Classic has a wide range of rifles, shotguns, handguns, bows and crossbows. The store announcements from mid-2026 mention items like **.270 bolt-action rifles, .30-30 lever-action rifles, .223 rifles, .17 HMR lever-action rifles, .45-70 rifles, a 9.3x74R over/under break-action rifle, a 10 GA lever-action shotgun, a 12 GA pump-action shotgun and a .357 revolver**. General matching rules:

| Target size | Good choices | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rabbits, hares, small predators | Small calibers such as .17 HMR or .223 | Clean kills without destroying small game |
| Birds and waterfowl | Shotguns (12 GA, 10 GA) with birdshot | You need a spread for flying and small targets |
| Deer-sized game | Medium calibers such as .270 or .30-30 | Enough energy for vitals shots at normal ranges |
| Elk, moose, bison, bears | Heavy calibers such as .45-70 or 9.3x74R | Deep penetration for large bodies |
| Challenge hunts | Handguns, bows, crossbows | Short range only. Get close with good fieldcraft |

With most of the store at 95% off, this is a good time to build a full kit that covers every species group.

### Accessories worth grabbing

- **Scopes:** Low magnification for woods, higher for open plains and mountains.
- **Shooting tripods and rests:** Much steadier long shots.
- **Callers for each species group:** Deer, elk, predators, turkey and waterfowl respond to different calls.
- **Tents:** Faster access to remote parts of big reserves.

## Missions, Competitions and Progress

- **Missions:** Every reserve has mission chains that teach its species and pay gm$. Daily Missions run until shutdown.
- **Competitions:** Regular competitions run until **November 10, 2026**. The Community League ends **October 9, 2026**.
- **Trophy scores:** Scores depend on the animal's size, antlers or horns, and how cleanly you took it. Bad shot placement and the wrong caliber both lower the score.
- **Trophy Lodge:** Your mounted trophies show here. Take screenshots before November 11.

## Final-Weeks Checklist

1. Make a list of the species you never shot and the reserves you never finished.
2. Spend your gm$ and em$ on the discounted weapons and gear for those hunts.
3. Get the free Wolfsbane weapons before October 28.
4. Finish any last league competitions before October 9, and regular ones before November 10.
5. Hunt werewolves during the final event (October 28 – November 11).
6. Save all your screenshots and trophy images locally.
7. Tell your hunting friends where you are going next, such as a Discord server or a new game.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Keeping em$ for later.** There is no later. It is worth nothing after November 11.
- **Buying a used disc copy.** The official notice warns that disc copies will not work after the shutdown.
- **Stalking downwind.** This is the most common reason animals bolt before you even see them.
- **Running into a hunting area.** Walk the last stretch and crouch near animals.
- **Using too light a caliber on big game.** You end up with long, frustrating blood trails and lost trophies.
- **Taking impatient shots.** A quartering-toward or running shot often ends with a wounded animal and no harvest.
- **Assuming your data will be kept.** The developers have said they cannot save anything for you.

## Advanced Tips

- **Glass before you walk.** Scan open ground with binoculars from high points before moving. Finding animals from a distance saves a lot of time.
- **Use terrain for sound.** Ridges and gullies block noise. Loop around through low ground to reach a downwind spot.
- **Pair calls with a stand.** Call from an elevated stand so animals coming in do not scent or spot you.
- **Hunt at dawn and dusk.** Many species move more at these times. Use the full day cycle to your advantage.
- **Co-op hunts:** You can hunt with up to 7 other players. Split up to cover more ground and use one hunter as a spotter.
- **Try new weapons now.** At 95% off, pick up unusual gear like handguns, bows and crossbows for challenge hunts while it is cheap.

## Where to Go Next

- **theHunter: Call of the Wild** is the ongoing hunting sim from the same studio family. It is a separate, buy-once game with offline play and paid reserve DLC. It keeps getting new reserves (Wikipedia lists a Peru reserve, Intisuyu, for 2026).
- The Classic community is gathering on the official **Discord**, where Trophy of the Week continues.

## FAQ

**Can I still buy theHunter Classic?**

**Will there be an offline mode or private servers?**
No official offline mode or server release has been announced. The game is online-only and stops working at shutdown.

**Can I create a new account now?**
The July 9 developer notes say new account creation is being shut off. If you do not already have an account, assume you cannot make one.
