The Sims 4: Complete Guide
This guide covers the free Base Game systems (needs, skills, careers, relationships, Build Mode, and money), plus the settings, cheats, and habits that make long saves run smoothly. There are also notes on which packs change the most.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the September 22, 2026 update (PC 1.128.90.1030, Mac 1.128.90.1230, console 2.39). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- The Base Game is free. It has been free to download since 2022. Expansion, Game, and Stuff Packs and Kits are paid add-ons, and the Base Game patches (like the September 2026 one) are free for everyone.
- Watch needs first, then moodlets. Keeping the six needs above the middle of the bar is what keeps a Sim functional. The mood you see (Happy, Focused, Inspired, and so on) comes from moodlets, and it boosts matching skills and careers.
- Pick an Aspiration and 3 traits carefully. Aspiration milestones give Satisfaction Points, which you spend on Rewards Store traits and potions.
- Use the right mood for the task. Focused boosts logic and writing, Inspired boosts painting and writing, Energized boosts fitness, and Confident boosts charisma and many career tasks.
- Skills unlock careers and money. Painting, Writing, Programming, and Gardening can all earn good money without a career.
- Start small. A new household starts with limited Simoleons. Buy a cheap starter home on a lot with free space, and expand the house as income comes in.
- Use Manage Worlds and Gallery. You can download creator-made houses and Sims from the Gallery for free, in-game.
- Save often, and rotate saves. Use "Save As" every few in-game weeks so a corrupted save or bad mod doesn't cost you your whole family.
- Turn on or off Aging and Story Progression in Game Options to control the pace. Many players set aging to Long or turn it off for the active household.
- After a patch, update or remove script mods. Most crashes after a patch come from outdated mods.

Group meals boost relationships |
| Energy |
Sleep, nap, drink coffee or energy drinks |
A better bed gives faster Energy recovery |

Outgoing Sims drain faster; Loners drain slower |
Higher-quality objects (beds, showers, stoves, fridges) restore needs faster and often give positive moodlets. Environment score from decorations gives a small Happy moodlet in well-decorated rooms.
Emotions and moodlets
Moodlets stack. The strongest emotion wins. The main uses:
- Focused: Logic, Programming, Rocket Science, Video Gaming, and Chess
- Inspired: Painting, Writing, Cooking, Photography, Musical instruments
- Energized: Fitness, Handiness, and athletic careers
- Confident: Charisma, Comedy, and many career performance tasks
- Flirty: Romance interactions
- Playful: Comedy, Mischief
Sure-fire ways to get the right mood: a Focused-quality decor item, the "Take a Brainstorming Shower" interaction (Inspired), working out (Energized), or practicing a speech in the mirror (Confident).
Skills
Skills level from 1 to 10 (5 for toddler and child skills). Books, the right mood, and objects of higher quality speed skill gain. Money-making skills:

Careers
Careers (Base Game) include Astronaut, Athlete, Business, Criminal, Culinary, Entertainer, Painter, Secret Agent, Style Influencer, Tech Guru, Writer, and part-time jobs. Packs add many more.
- Each workday, you can choose "Work Hard" (more performance, more stress) or other attitudes.
- Promotion needs enough performance, the right skill levels, and often a daily task (for example, "Write a Book" or "Practice Programming").
- Active careers (Doctor, Detective, Scientist from Get to Work, and more in other packs) let you go to work with the Sim and control their day.
Relationships
- Friendship and Romance are separate bars.
- Friendly interactions build friendship, and romantic ones build romance once the Sims are close enough.
- Traits and Sentiments (lasting feelings like "Hurt" or "Good Friends") affect relationships.
- Lovestruck adds romance satisfaction, attraction, and more dating options. Growing Together adds Family Dynamics and social compatibility. The September 2026 patch rebalanced both packs: Family Dynamics like "Strict" and "Jokesters" show up less often, and Lovestruck's Relationship Satisfaction now decays slowly and no longer changes for inactive households.
Money
- Bills arrive based on how much your lot is worth. Very expensive objects increase your bills.
- Paying late turns off the power and water, so pay bills as soon as they show up.
- Early money options: collect and sell gems, crystals, and fossils. Grow and sell produce. Paint or write books. Take a freelance programming gig.
- Packs like Businesses & Hobbies, Get to Work, and Dine Out add owned businesses and more ways to earn.
Build and Buy Mode
- Use Rooms first, then walls, to save time. Use the room tool to drag a room size, and then you can resize it later.
- Moveobjects (type
bb.moveobjects into the cheat console) lets you place objects anywhere, including overlapping, which is great for detailed decorating.
- Alt while placing (on PC) turns off grid snapping for free placement.
- Fences, half walls, and columns add a lot of detail cheaply.
- Room styles: the Base Game includes pre-made styled rooms you can place in one click. The September 2026 update added a new kids' styled room and eight kids' Build/Buy items for free.
- Lot Traits (in Manage Worlds and lot settings) give bonuses or challenges, like "Home Studio" (for music), "Gremlins," or "Great Soil."

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Overspending early on expensive objects. High-value items raise your bills. Buy the key quality objects first (bed, shower, fridge, stove).
- Ignoring mood. A Sim with the wrong emotion skills much slower and works worse.
- Letting a toddler or child fall behind on skills. Early character values and skills unlock better traits when they grow up.
- Using many mods without a backup. After a patch, script mods break first. Move your Mods folder out, test the game, and add mods back.
- Running out of storage. On console, huge builds and large households can slow the game down. Keep saves lean.
- Forgetting to pay bills. Late bills cut off utilities after a few days.
Advanced Tips
- Stack moods. A Sim with multiple matching moodlets (like several Focused ones) reaches Very Focused, which increases skill gain further.
- Use the right trait combo. Genius (for logic), Creative (for arts), Ambitious (for careers), and Self-Assured or Cheerful (for stable moods) are among the most useful traits.
- Buy reward traits. Satisfaction Points can buy traits like Steel Bladder, Hardly Hungry, Fresh Chef, and Speed Reader.
- Rotate households for a legacy save. Use Story Progression to let the rest of the world live on while you manage a few families.
- Speed up writing royalties. Write books early in a Sim's life. Royalties pay out for a while after publishing, so a back catalog keeps paying, and higher Writing skill means better-paying books.
- Use the Gallery for lots and rooms. Load a creator-made starter home into your world to save hours of building.
- Repair the game when it breaks. On PC, use the EA app's Repair option, then clear the
localthumbcache.package file from your Sims 4 documents folder.
FAQ
Is The Sims 4 still free?
Yes. The Base Game has been free since October 2022, and packs are sold separately.
What changed in the September 22, 2026 update?
Big autonomy improvements (Sims make eye contact, use the nearest bathroom sink, and dance less often), 95+ bug fixes, rebalancing for Lovestruck and Growing Together, and free kids' content (eight Build/Buy items, nine CAS assets, a styled room, and new Gallery Sims).
How do I open the cheat console?
Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Mac. On console, press all four shoulder buttons together.
Why did my game break after an update?
Most often, outdated mods are the cause. Remove your Mods folder, delete localthumbcache.package, and test again. Add mods back one at a time.
What's the fastest way to make money without cheats?
Painting, writing books, and freelance programming are the most reliable early options. Gardening and collecting (crystals, gems, fossils) are good extras.
Which pack should I buy first?
Seasons and Cats and Dogs are the classic picks. Get to Work is best if you like active careers. Growing Together is best for family gameplay.
How do I stop my Sims from aging?
Go to Game Options, then Gameplay, and set Auto Aging to off for played households, unplayed households, or both.
