# TEKKEN 7: Beginner-to-Advanced Guide

A practical TEKKEN 7 guide: the controls and notation you'll see everywhere, the core systems (Rage Art, Rage Drive, Power Crush, Screw), defense and punishment fundamentals, beginner-friendly characters, ranked tips, and where TEKKEN 7 stands now that TEKKEN 8 is out.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of TEKKEN 7's final content season (Season 4, 2020–2021). TEKKEN 8 launched on 26 January 2024 and is where new content goes; TEKKEN 7 is no longer receiving new characters.*

## Status at a Glance

| Item | Status (September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Final DLC season | Season 4 (Kunimitsu and Lidia Sobieska) |
| Roster | 51 fighters with all DLC (per Wikipedia), including guests Akuma, Geese Howard, Noctis, and Negan |
| Sales | 12 million copies as of July 2024, the best-selling TEKKEN |
| Successor | TEKKEN 8 (released 26 January 2024) |
| Online | Still used by players; the arcade Tekken-Net service ended on 31 May 2018 |

## Quick Start

1. **Learn the notation.** 1 = left punch, 2 = right punch, 3 = left kick, 4 = right kick. Directions: f (forward), b (back), d (down), u (up), plus diagonals like df (down-forward). A move like "df+1" means down-forward plus left punch.
2. **Pick one character and stay with them.** TEKKEN rewards depth; switching every few games slows you down.
3. **Block by holding back.** Standing block stops highs and mids; crouch-blocking (hold down-back) stops lows. Mid attacks hit crouching players.
4. **Learn your punishers.** After blocking an unsafe move, punish with a fast move. This single skill wins more games than anything else.
5. **Break throws.** Press 1 or 2 depending on which hand the opponent grabs with (1+2 for two-handed throws).
6. **Sidestep linear attacks.** Tap up or down to step; hold to sidewalk. It beats many linear strings.
7. **Use Rage when low on health.** Rage Art is a comeback move; Rage Drive is a lower-risk alternative.
8. **Get up safely.** Many knockdowns can be teched (a quick recovery roll) by pressing a button as you land; practice the timing in Practice mode, and learn which knockdowns can't be teched.
9. **Play Practice mode.** Set the dummy to block and record punish scenarios.
10. **Don't be afraid of ranked.** Losses are part of learning; focus on one thing each session.

## Controls and Notation

| Button | Notation |
|---|---|
| Left punch | 1 |
| Right punch | 2 |
| Left kick | 3 |
| Right kick | 4 |
| Directions | f, b, u, d, df, db, uf, ub |
| Hold direction | Capital letter (e.g. F = hold forward) |
| While standing (rising from crouch) | WS |
| While running | WR |
| Sidestep | SS |

## Core Systems

### Rage System

| Mechanic | Description |
|---|---|
| Rage | Activates when your health gets low; increases damage |
| Rage Art | A cinematic super unique to each character; using it spends your Rage until the next round |
| Rage Drive | A powered-up move variation that spends Rage; less risky with different utility |

**Tip:** Rage Arts are powerful but punishable if blocked. Rage Drives are often safer and can extend combos.

### Power Crush

- Power Crush moves absorb high and mid hits and continue attacking.
- They don't absorb lows or throws.
- Great against opponents who mash high/mid attacks.

### Screw (Tailspin)

- Screw hits replace TEKKEN 6's Bound.
- A screw spins an airborne opponent, letting you extend combos.
- Each combo can contain only one screw.

### Wall Mechanics

- **Wall splat:** Hitting an opponent into a wall stuns them for a combo.
- **Wall break / floor break:** Some stages have breakable walls or floors that extend combos.
- **Balcony break:** Some walls send opponents to another level.

## Defense Fundamentals

| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Opponent throws highs | Crouch (duck) and punish |
| Opponent throws mids | Stand block; mids beat crouching |
| Opponent throws lows | Crouch-block (hold down-back) |
| Opponent throws you | Break with 1, 2, or 1+2 |
| You're knocked down | Tech roll or stay down depending on the situation |
| Linear string | Sidestep |

## Punishment

- **Standing punish:** After blocking an unsafe standing move, use a fast standing punish (commonly a jab or a fast launcher).
- **While-standing punish:** After blocking a low that leaves you crouching, use your WS punisher.
- **Launch punish:** Some very unsafe moves let you launch for a full combo.
- **Frame data:** Community resources list frames for every move. Check your character's list to learn which moves are safe and which are punishable.

### Frame Data Basics

Frame data is written from the attacker's point of view. You don't need to memorise it all, but these rules of thumb cover most situations:

| Term | Meaning | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| i10, i12, i15 | Startup: the move hits on frame 10, 12, 15 | Lower is faster. Most characters' jab is i10, the fastest standard punisher |
| +/- on block | Frame advantage after the opponent blocks | Plus means it's still your turn; minus means theirs |
| -10 or worse | Punishable by a jab | Always punish these, even if only with 1,2 |
| -12, -13, -14 | Punishable by stronger fast moves | Learn your character's best i12–i14 punisher |
| -15 or worse | Launch punishable for most characters | This is where the big damage comes from |
| CH | Counter hit | Many moves gain extra effects (stuns, launches) on counter hit |

**Practical approach:** Look up the three or four moves each opponent character spams most, lab how minus they are on block, and drill the matching punisher. That alone fixes most mid-rank losses.

### Stances and Movement Terms

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Backdash | Double-tap back to retreat; the core spacing tool |
| Crouch dash (cd) | f, n, d, df motion used by Mishimas for Wind God Fist and other moves |
| Sidewalk | Holding up or down to keep stepping; beats more linear moves than a single sidestep |
| Whiff punish | Hitting an opponent whose attack missed; backdash out of range, then punish |
| Okizeme | Pressure on a grounded opponent as they get up |

## TEKKEN 7 vs TEKKEN 8

| | TEKKEN 7 | TEKKEN 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Released (PC) | 1 June 2017 | 26 January 2024 |
| Roster | 51 with all DLC | 32 fighters at launch, with DLC added since |
| Signature system | Rage Art, Rage Drive, Power Crush, Screw | The aggression-focused **Heat** system (plus Rage Arts) |
| Single-player extras | Story, Character Episodes, Treasure Battle | Story, Arcade Quest, Super Ghost Battle |
| Online hub | Menu-based lobbies | TEKKEN Fight Lounge |

Fundamentals (blocking, punishing, sidestepping, throw breaks) transfer directly, so time spent in TEKKEN 7's Practice mode is not wasted if you move on.

## Beginner-Friendly Characters

| Character | Why they're good for beginners |
|---|---|
| Paul Phoenix | Strong damage and simple tools |
| Kazumi Mishima | Straightforward pressure and good defense |
| Katarina Alves | Solid all-rounder with clear tools |
| Bryan Fury | Heavy damage, strong punishers |
| Steve Fox | Boxing style; teaches movement and punishment |
| Claudio Serafino | Simple game plan with a powerful buff |
| Akuma | Familiar fireball/uppercut tools from Street Fighter |

**Harder characters** such as Kazuya Mishima, Heihachi, and Devil Jin use Electric Wind God Fist and other techniques that take time to execute. Start with a simpler pick if you're new.

## DLC Characters

| Period | Characters (release dates per Wikipedia) |
|---|---|
| 2017–2018 (Season Passes 1–2) | Eliza (July 2017), Geese Howard, Noctis, Anna Williams and Lei Wulong (Sept 2018), Craig Marduk and Armor King (Dec 2018), Negan |
| 2019–2020 | Julia Chang (Feb 2019), Zafina (Sept 2019), Ganryu and Leroy Smith (Dec 2019), Fahkumram (Mar 2020) |
| Season 4 (2020–2021) | Kunimitsu (10 Nov 2020), Lidia Sobieska (23 Mar 2021) |

Base console/PC launch had 36 fighters; with every DLC the roster reaches 51.

## Modes

- **Story Mode:** The Mishima Saga conclusion, told with cutscenes.
- **Character Episodes:** Short single-fight stories for each character.
- **Treasure Battle:** Win fights to earn customization rewards.
- **Practice:** Record the dummy and learn punishes.
- **Ranked and Player Matches:** Online play.
- **Ultimate Tekken Bowl (DLC):** A bowling minigame.

## A 30-Minute Practice Routine

| Minutes | Drill | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 0–5 | Movement: backdash, sidestep both ways, crouch-dash | Comfortable movement before you fight |
| 5–10 | Your main combo from your best launcher, on both sides | Consistent damage when you land a launcher |
| 10–15 | Punishers: record the dummy doing common unsafe moves, block, punish | Automatic punishment |
| 15–20 | Low blocking: set the dummy to random high/low, react to lows | Stop eating free low damage |
| 20–25 | Throw breaks: set random throws and break them | Remove free throw damage |
| 25–30 | Wall combos: launch near a wall and finish with your wall ender | Maximise damage at the wall |

Repeat for a week and you'll feel the difference in ranked.

## Building a Simple Game Plan

1. **Two safe pokes** (a fast jab and a safe mid) to keep your turn.
2. **One low** that is safe or hard to punish, to catch opponents who stand block too long.
3. **One launcher** you use as a punisher or whiff punish.
4. **One combo** from that launcher that you can land nearly every time.
5. **One wall ender** for when the opponent is near the wall.

Add more tools only when these feel automatic.

## Ranked Tips

- **Use your best 3–4 moves in neutral.** A small, strong game plan beats a big, messy one.
- **Punish every unsafe move.** At lower ranks, punishment alone climbs the ladder.
- **Learn common threats.** Many players rely on strong strings; learn to duck or sidestep them.
- **Record and review replays.** Look for patterns in how you lose.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Mashing.** Mashing loses to blocks and punishers.
- **Never blocking lows.** Players will keep hitting you with lows until you learn to crouch-block.
- **Using unsafe Rage Arts.** A blocked Rage Art gives the opponent a big punish.
- **Ignoring movement.** Sidestepping and backdashing are core skills.
- **Learning only combos.** Combos matter, but defense and punishment win more games.

## Advanced Tips

- **Backdash cancel:** Cancel backdashes into a crouch to move backward faster.
- **Korean Backdash (KBD):** An advanced backdash technique for spacing.
- **Electric Wind God Fist (Mishima):** A frame-perfect variant of the Wind God Fist with better properties.
- **Okizeme (wakeup pressure):** Learn how to pressure knocked-down opponents.
- **Frame traps:** Use strings that catch opponents who press buttons.
