Team Fortress 2: Complete Guide

Everything a new or returning player needs for Team Fortress 2: the nine classes, game modes, key unlocks, Medic and Engineer fundamentals, settings, economy basics, and what the 2026 updates added.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Summer 2026 update (July 7, 2026) and its follow-up hotfixes through mid-July. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Pick a class that fits the moment, not your favorite. TF2 is a team game first. If your team has no Medic, playing Medic will win more games than a fourth Sniper.
  2. Stay near your Medic and your team. Most new-player deaths come from wandering alone into a Spy, a sentry, or a flank.
  3. Watch the objective, not the kill feed. Payload carts, control points, and the intelligence decide rounds. Standing on the point or pushing the cart counts.
  4. Call for Medic with E when hurt, and grab health kits and ammo packs; resupply cabinets in spawn refill everything instantly.
  5. Airblast, spy-check, and listen. Spies are everywhere in casual. Bump into teammates who behave oddly, and Pyros should puff flames at corners.
  6. Unlocks are sidegrades, not upgrades. Stock weapons are strong. Get alternatives from random drops, achievements, crafting, or trading, but you never need them to compete.
  7. Turn on hit sounds and damage numbers in Advanced Options. Knowing when and how much you hit is huge for learning.
  8. Free accounts are limited. Free-to-play accounts have restrictions (smaller backpack, no trading, and chat limits). Any purchase in the Mann Co. Store upgrades you to Premium permanently.

FAQ

Is TF2 free? Yes, it's free to play. Free accounts have trading and backpack limits until you make any Mann Co. Store purchase, which upgrades you to Premium.

What's the best class for beginners? Soldier and Heavy are forgiving and teach positioning. Medic is the most valuable class to learn and easy to start. Spy and Sniper take the most practice.

How do I get new weapons? Random drops during play, achievements, crafting (Class Tokens + Slot Tokens + Metal), trading, or buying from the Mann Co. Store.

What are the new Summer 2026 maps? Dryfield (King of the Hill), Premuda (control points), Redwood (Payload), plus Camp Saxton, Shorelight, and Mojave.

How do I enable hit sounds and damage numbers? Options, Multiplayer, Advanced: enable "Play hit sound" and "Show damage done as text over your target."

Why do random crits happen and can I turn them off? Random crits are a default casual mechanic. You can't disable them in Valve matchmaking, but many community servers and competitive leagues turn them off.
