A complete guide to Street Fighter V on PC (Champion Edition content): controls, the V-System and meters, how to pick a main, the fundamentals that win games, how to earn Fight Money, the ranked ladder, and where the game stands now that Street Fighter 6 is out.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Ver. 07.010 (2 September 2022), the most recent title update listed on Capcom's official SFV Capcom Fighters Network site. The game is no longer receiving balance changes; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status: Street Fighter V is finished content-wise. Its final Season V character, Luke, arrived as the last addition (bringing the roster to 46), the last title update was Ver. 07.010 in September 2022, and Capcom's active development moved to Street Fighter 6 (June 2023). SFV is still sold on Steam, displays the "Arcade Edition" title screen, and the Champion Edition upgrade (released 14 February 2020) bundles 40 characters, 34 stages and over 200 costumes. Online play (Ranked, Casual, Battle Lounge) and PS4 cross-play remain listed features on the store page. Note that Capcom's Steam news hub for SFV now mostly carries Street Fighter 6 announcements.
SFV uses the classic six-button layout.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| LP / MP / HP | Light, medium, heavy punch |
| LK / MK / HK | Light, medium, heavy kick |
| LP + LK | Throw (forward or back) |
| MP + MK | V-Skill (V-Skill 1 or 2, chosen on the character select screen) |
| HP + HK | V-Trigger (V-Trigger 1 or 2, chosen on character select) |
| Forward + three punches or three kicks while blocking | V-Reversal (varies by character; check the Move List) |
| Quarter-circle and dragon-punch motions | Special moves; press two punches or kicks for EX versions |
Check each character's Move List in the pause menu for exact V-Reversal and V-Shift inputs and command normals.
| System | What it means |
|---|---|
| Stun gauge | Taking hits fills it; if it maxes out, you are stunned and open to a free combo |
| Recoverable (grey) damage | Damage taken while blocking some moves and certain attacks; it regenerates if you avoid being hit |
| Crush Counter | Certain heavy normals and specials cause a big crumple or launch on counter-hit, opening huge combos |
| Chip damage | Special moves and supers deal small damage through block, which matters when a player is on very low health |
The final roster is 46 fighters: 16 at launch plus 30 added over five seasons. The Champion Edition bundle covers the 40 released through its February 2020 launch; the six Season V characters (Dan, Rose, Oro, Akira, Eleven and Luke) are sold separately, for example in the Season 5 Character Pass. Good starting picks:
| Character | Why they are beginner-friendly |
|---|---|
| Ryu | Fireball, uppercut, simple combos; teaches fundamentals |
| Ken | Like Ryu but more aggressive; strong rushdown |
| Luke | Straightforward modern shoto with a strong projectile and good punishes |
| Guile | Charge character with excellent zoning; teaches patience and anti-airs |
| Cammy | Fast, simple offence and strong movement |
| Chun-Li | Excellent normals and footsies, a good long-term main |
| Karin | Strong buttons and combo routes once you learn her |
Note: Tier lists are frozen now that balance updates have stopped, so any community tier list made after the final 2022 update still applies. Below high ranks, fundamentals matter far more than tier placement, and every character is viable.
Luke is not in Champion Edition. He is one of the six Season V characters, so buy him separately if you want to start with him.
| Mode | What it is | Best for |

| Survival | Consecutive CPU fights with limited recovery | Fight Money and costume colours |
| Training | Frame data, recording, hitbox display | Labbing punishes and combos |
| Team Battle | Team elimination matches | Casual play with friends |
| Extra Battle | Special online-enabled challenge battles | Rewards, XP and Fight Money |
| Ranked / Casual / Battle Lounge | Online play with PS4 cross-play | Competition and lobbies |
Fight Money (FM) is earned from Story completions, Trials, Survival, Arcade, levelling characters up, and ranked play. It buys characters, stages and many costumes. Fighter's Pass (season pass) purchases and premium costumes still require real money, and some costumes (brand collaborations, Capcom Pro Tour DLC) are not included in the Champion Edition bundle. The fastest early FM comes from finishing each character's Trials and prologue stories the first time.
Ranked uses League Points (LP) and ranks running from Rookie through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Grand Master and Ultimate Grand Master to Warlord, with sub-tiers (such as Super and Ultra) inside the lower leagues. Tips:
Is Street Fighter V still worth playing in 2026? For offline play, Trials and a large roster, yes. The online community is much smaller than Street Fighter 6's, so expect longer ranked queues.
Will SFV get more characters or balance patches? No. Luke was the final character, and the last title update listed is Ver. 07.010 (September 2022).
What does Champion Edition include? All characters, stages and costumes from the original release, Arcade Edition and the content released up to its February 2020 launch (40 characters, 34 stages, 200+ costumes), except Fighting Chance costumes, brand collaboration costumes and Capcom Pro Tour DLC. The six Season V characters released afterwards are not included.
What is V-Shift? A defensive mechanic added with the Champion Edition update in February 2020. It spends one V-Gauge stock to dodge an incoming attack and can follow up with a counter. Check each character's Move List for the input.
Can I play against PS4 players? Yes, SFV supports cross-play between Steam and PlayStation 4.
How do I get characters without paying? Earn Fight Money through Story, Trials, Survival, Arcade and levelling, then buy characters in the in-game Shop.
Is SFV good practice for Street Fighter 6? The fundamentals (anti-airs, footsies, punishing, throw defence) carry over completely. The meter systems are different (SF6 uses the Drive Gauge).
