Street Fighter 6: Complete Beginner-to-Ranked Guide

Controls, the Drive System, how to pick a main, the fundamentals that actually win games, and how to climb ranked, updated for the start of Year 4.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Year 4 (Yasmine released August 3, 2026; Arjun arrives October 13, 2026) and the August 2026 battle adjustments. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Pick Modern or Classic controls and commit. Modern gives one-button specials at a damage cost; Classic is the traditional six-button layout. Both are fully legitimate in ranked and tournaments.
  2. Learn the Drive Gauge before learning combos. Drive Parry, Drive Impact, Drive Rush and Burnout decide more beginner games than execution.
  3. Block more. Most early losses come from pressing buttons when it is not your turn.
  4. Answer Drive Impact with your own Drive Impact (or a well-timed Drive Reversal). This single habit wins dozens of games in lower ranks.
  5. Learn one reliable combo from a light and one from a heavy/punish. That covers most situations.
  6. Use Training Mode's frame meter. It shows exactly who is plus and minus after every move.
  7. Do the character guide and combo trials for your main in Fighting Ground.
  8. Play placement matches only after you can do basics; early ranks move quickly anyway, so rank is not something to fear.

Game Modes

Mode What it is
Fighting Ground Arcade, Versus, Training, Tutorials, Character Guides, Combo Trials, Ranked and Casual online
World Tour Single-player RPG story with a custom avatar learning from the Masters. Your avatar also carries into Battle Hub avatar battles. The May 28, 2026 update added two avatar modes: Random Avatar Matches and Avatar Arcade
Battle Hub Online lobby with cabinets, avatar battles, events and Capcom classic games

Controls

Classic (default keyboard/pad layout) Modern
Light / Medium / Heavy Punch and Kick (6 buttons) Light / Medium / Heavy attack, Special (SP), Assist, Drive Impact, Drive Parry
Specials via motion inputs (quarter-circle, charge, etc.) Specials via direction + SP; Assist button auto-combos
Full damage Assisted specials deal reduced damage; manual inputs on Modern still get full damage

Dynamic controls are an offline-only mode where the AI picks attacks for you; fine for casual couch play, not for ranked.

Throw: Light Punch + Light Kick. Drive Parry: Medium Punch + Medium Kick. Drive Impact: Heavy Punch + Heavy Kick.

The Drive System

You have six bars of Drive Gauge that refill over time and with offense.

Mechanic Cost What it does
Drive Impact 1 bar Armored attack that absorbs up to two hits; wall-splats a cornered opponent; crumples a Burnout opponent even on block
Drive Parry Drains while held Parries strikes and projectiles, restores gauge; a Perfect Parry (tight timing) leaves the opponent open
Drive Rush 1 bar from Parry, 3 bars as a cancel from a normal Fast forward dash that makes your next normal more advantageous; core of every character's offense
Drive Reversal 2 bars Counterattack out of block; low damage, gets you out of pressure
Overdrive (OD) moves 2 bars Enhanced special moves (press two buttons on Classic)

Burnout

At zero Drive you enter Burnout: you cannot use Drive moves, you take chip damage when blocking specials, and a blocked Drive Impact near the wall stuns you. Spending your last bars recklessly is the most common way to lose a round you were winning.

Choosing a Main

Archetype Good first picks Why
Shoto (all-rounder) Ryu, Ken, Luke, Akuma Fireball, anti-air, simple game plan
Charge/defensive Guile Teaches spacing and patience
Zoner JP, Dhalsim Keep-away; teaches range control
Rushdown Cammy, Kimberly, Jamie, Yasmine Pressure and mix-ups
Grappler Zangief, Manon, Lily Command grabs; teaches reads
Heavy hitters Marisa, Sagat Big damage, armored moves

Pick the character you enjoy looking at and playing; the "best" tier-list character matters little below Master rank. Balance adjustments for every character arrived alongside Yasmine in August 2026, so check the patch notes on Buckler's Bootcamp before trusting older tier lists.

Ranked Ladder

The ladder runs from Rookie through Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond (each with sub-tiers), up to Master, where you gain Master Rate (MR) instead of League Points. Legend is the top rank for the very best Master players. Early ranks have demotion protection, so do not stress about losing streaks while learning.

FAQ

Classic or Modern controls, which is better? Neither is strictly better. Modern is easier with less damage on assisted specials; Classic has more tools on some characters. Top players use both.

When is Arjun released? October 13, 2026, for Year 4 Character/Ultimate Pass owners or via Fighter Coins.

Who are the Year 4 characters? Yasmine, Arjun, Tifa Lockhart and Bosch.

What is the best character for beginners? Ryu, Ken, Luke or Guile for fundamentals; Marisa or Zangief if you like big damage.

How does gray life work against Arjun? Recoverable damage heals over time if you are not hit; a hit removes all of it at once.

Is World Tour still getting updates? The avatar side of the game is still being updated: the May 28, 2026 update added Random Avatar Matches and Avatar Arcade. Year 4 also adds Bosch, a World Tour character, as a playable fighter. Check the official site for any new World Tour story content.
