Stellaris: Complete Beginner-to-Endgame Guide

Empire creation, the first 30 years, economy rules of thumb for the 4.x pop system, war and fleets, ascension paths and endgame crises, current as of the 4.5 "Cygnus" update.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Stellaris 4.5.1 "Cygnus" (hotfix released September 24, 2026; 4.5 released September 22, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Start with a prescripted empire. The United Nations of Earth or the Commonwealth of Man are balanced and forgiving. Build custom empires after one campaign.
  2. Never let a ship sit idle. Science ships survey, construction ships build outposts and mining/research stations. Idle ships are lost time.
  3. Claim systems with outposts early. Borders define your future economy. Prioritize systems with habitable planets, rich deposits and chokepoints.
  4. Build a second and third science ship quickly. Exploration drives early growth and finds anomalies and special projects.
  5. Always pick research that helps your economy first (mineral, energy and research boosts, habitability), then weapons.
  6. Watch the top bar. Red numbers mean a deficit; a negative stockpile causes penalties.
  7. Pick a Tradition tree immediately (Expansion or Discovery are classic openers) and keep unity flowing.
  8. Set your policies (war philosophy, economic stance) in the first months.
  9. Pause often. Stellaris is real-time with pause. Space bar is your friend.
  10. 4.5 broke save compatibility. Start a new campaign after updating, or roll back via Steam betas to finish an old save.

Empire Creation

Ethics, authority and civics

Beginner-friendly builds

Build Why
Materialist research empire (Technocracy) Straightforward tech lead
Militarist conqueror Clear goal, war is fun and teaches fleets
Xenophile diplomatic empire Federations, trade, Galactic Community
Machine Intelligence No food, no consumer goods for most jobs; simpler economy
Hive Mind No factions or amenities complexity from ethics

Avoid the hardest origins (e.g. Doomsday, Void Dwellers-style starts, or genocidal civics like Fanatic Purifiers) on your first run.

Rules of thumb

Leaders and council

The First 30 Years (a general opening)

  1. Day 1: Pause. Send both science ships to survey different directions. Send the construction ship to build a mining or research station in your home system, then outposts.
  2. Pick policies, set the first Tradition (Expansion or Discovery), and assign your scientist to research.
  3. Build a second science ship and a second construction ship right away.
  4. Research priorities: Resource-boosting technologies, colony development, habitability, and the tech that increases starbase capacity.
  5. Year 5–15: Colonize one or two good planets. Build outposts on chokepoints. Upgrade your capital starbase and add shipyard/anchorage modules.
  6. Year 15–30: Meet neighbors. Decide on a stance: expand peacefully, join or form a Federation, or prepare a war. Build a modest fleet to deter AI aggression (AI evaluates your fleet power).
  7. Keep your stockpiles stable, and do not overbuild empty jobs; unfilled jobs waste resources.

Diplomacy and the Galaxy

War and Fleets

Ascension Paths

Path Theme Notes
Genetic (BioGenesis overhaul) Species modification, bio-ships Biomorphosis sped up in 4.5
Psionic (Shadows of the Shroud) The Shroud, psionic auras Three-stage Shroud situation
Synthetic / Cybernetic Machines and augmentation Cybernetic pops buffed in 4.5
Machine and Hive variants Gestalt-specific ascensions

Take your ascension tradition around mid-game once you have the required ascension perks.

Endgame Crises

At the endgame (default around year 2400; configurable) one of several crises may appear: the Prethoryn Scourge, the Unbidden, or the Contingency, among others. Player crisis paths (e.g. becoming a menace, Behemoth Fury from BioGenesis, Burning Worlds from Infernals) let you be the crisis. Prepare with fleets, defensive starbases and a strong alloy economy well before the crisis year.

FAQ

What is the latest Stellaris version? 4.5.1 "Cygnus" hotfix (September 24, 2026), following the 4.5 Custodian update on September 22.

Why does my old save not load after 4.5? 4.5 changed how pop groups store ethics and factions and is not save-compatible. Use Steam's betas tab to roll back if you need to finish an older campaign.

Which DLC should I buy first? Utopia (megastructures and ascension perks), Federations, and the most recent ascension packs are commonly recommended; since the 10th-anniversary patch (4.3.6) the base game on Steam includes Utopia, the Synthetic Dawn Story Pack and the Humanoids Species Pack, so skip those.

What is the easiest empire for beginners? United Nations of Earth or a custom Materialist/Technocracy empire with Prosperous Unification.

How do I stop ships vanishing from battles? That was the auto-disengage behaviour, disabled in 4.5.1.

When does the crisis happen? Around the endgame year set in galaxy settings (default 2400), though settings can shift it.
