Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 38 "Legacy Awaits" (October 22, 2024), the final update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status: Undead Labs released Update 38 (Legacy Awaits) in October 2024 as the final content update for State of Decay 2, after nearly 40 free updates. The game is complete and playable; the studio has moved on to State of Decay 3, which is still in development. Update 38 also permanently unlocked previously seasonal content such as the Wizard Van and Winter outfits.

Quick Start

  1. Start on Green Zone or Standard. The difficulty jump to Dread and Nightmare is large. Learn the systems first.
  2. Get medicine and an infirmary early. Blood Plague and injuries kill communities faster than zombies do.
  3. Claim outposts. Outposts extend your territory, provide resources, and later let you deposit rucksacks.
  4. Destroy Plague Hearts steadily. Each one weakens the Blood Plague's grip on the map. The more you destroy, the more aggressive the remaining hearts become, so prepare.
  5. Always carry a Plague Cure or at least plague cure ingredients. Getting infected without a cure is a death sentence on a timer.
  6. Watch morale. Low morale causes fights and survivors leaving. Beds, food, and a latrine keep people happy.
  7. Pick a leader deliberately. Your leader's type (Builder, Sheriff, Trader, Warlord) decides which facility and Legacy you get.
  8. Don't take everyone on runs. Leave survivors home to guard; bring one follower for backup.
  9. Vehicles are storage. Fill the trunk with rucksacks and drive them home.

Difficulty Zones

State of Decay 2 splits difficulty into three separately adjustable settings: Action, Community, and Maps. Each can be set to one of the zones below.

Zone Who it's for
Green Learning the game; zombies are forgiving and resources plentiful
Standard The intended experience for most players
Dread Tougher zombies, scarcer resources
Nightmare Very punishing
Lethal Brutal; for veterans only

Custom difficulty lets you, for example, play Lethal combat with a more relaxed community.

Core Resources

Resource What it does How to get it
Food Feeds the community daily Scavenging, gardens, farms, outposts
Medicine Heals and treats illness Scavenging, infirmary, outposts
Ammo Keeps guns firing Scavenging, workshop, trading
Materials Builds and upgrades facilities Scavenging, outposts
Fuel Powers vehicles and some facilities Scavenging, outposts

Rucksacks are bulk resource packs. Carry one back to base or drop it in your vehicle trunk. Since Update 36, you can deposit rucksacks at level 2 or higher outposts.

Influence is your social currency. Earn it from missions, trading, destroying Plague Hearts, and helping enclaves. Spend it on outposts, trading, and recruiting.

Survivors

Skills

Each survivor has four core skills plus one extra slot:

Skill What it improves
Cardio Stamina and running
Wits Scavenging speed and stealth
Fighting Melee
Shooting Guns
Fifth skill Community skill such as Chemistry, Computers, Cooking, Gardening, Mechanics, Medicine, or Utilities; unlocks facility bonuses and crafting

When a core skill reaches the top level, you can pick a specialization. Specializations shape a survivor's role: a Backpacking specialist carries far more loot, while Reconnaissance reveals more of the map.

Traits

Traits give buffs and penalties: some raise morale, others reduce it. Some survivors have "Blood Plague Survivor" and are harder to infect. Read traits before recruiting.

Leaders

Promote a survivor to leader when your community is ready. The leader's background decides your community's leader type:

Leader Special facility Legacy
Builder Builder-specific base upgrades Builder Legacy
Sheriff Sheriff-specific upgrades Sheriff Legacy
Trader Trader-specific upgrades Trader Legacy
Warlord Warlord-specific upgrades Warlord Legacy

Completing a leader's Legacy mission line ends that community's story and unlocks a Legacy boon for future communities.

Bases and Facilities

Choosing a base

Priority facilities

Facility Why
Infirmary Heals, crafts the Plague Cure, reduces illness
Workshop Repairs weapons, crafts parts and ammo
Beds / sleeping areas Keep morale up
Kitchen Improves food efficiency and morale
Garden Steady food
Watchtower Base defense
Latrine Morale and sanitation
Storage More resource capacity

Outposts

The Blood Plague

Destroying a Plague Heart

  1. Scout it. Plague Hearts are marked; approach carefully.
  2. Bring explosives or a strong melee weapon. Hearts have high health.
  3. Clear surrounding zombies. A Plague Heart attack spawns more zombies and freaks.
  4. Bring a follower to split aggro.
  5. Carry a cure and healing items.

Freaks

Freak Threat How to handle
Screamer Attracts zombies Kill quickly with a firearm or melee from behind
Bloater Poison gas cloud Shoot from range; don't melee. Since Update 36, the gas cloud's VFX and damage are better matched
Feral Fast, lethal, leaps Stay mobile; use a strong weapon; don't let it pin you
Juggernaut Huge, tanky Use explosives, big guns, or a vehicle
Plague variants Red-eyed, plague-spreading versions of freaks, most common near Plague Hearts and on higher difficulties Treat as the normal version but avoid getting hit; every hit raises plague infection

First Day Priorities

  1. Clear the starting area and loot nearby buildings.
  2. Pick your first base. Look for an infirmary slot.
  3. Build an infirmary (or keep your starter one).
  4. Claim one or two outposts near food or medicine.
  5. Recruit or rescue survivors for more hands.
  6. Craft a Plague Cure as soon as you have samples.
  7. Destroy a nearby Plague Heart once you're geared.

Enclaves and the Bounty Broker

Curveballs

Added in Update 34 (September 2023), Curveballs are dynamic events that change the map for a time: sometimes a boon (like a lost supply crate), sometimes a bane (like a mutated zombie group or raiders). Update 37 (July 2024) added a control panel to tailor which Curveballs appear.

Co-op

Juggernaut Edition Contents

Content What it is
Base game (remastered) Graphical overhaul, new lighting, and Providence Ridge map
Heartland Story campaign set in Trumbull Valley
Daybreak 4-player wave-based siege defense; rewards include Red Talon contractors you can bring into your main game
Independence Pack Weapons, vehicles, and cosmetics

Trumbull Valley itself was remastered as a full sandbox map in the free Homecoming update (September 1, 2021). Providence Ridge, the map added with Juggernaut Edition, is a former logging town with steep elevation changes and twisty roads, so drive carefully.
