Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition: Complete Guide

A spoiler-light guide to Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition — how the boat, spirits and resource loop fit together, what to prioritize early, and how to clean up the achievements without missing anything.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Farewell Edition (the final content update, released 13 December 2021; no further gameplay patches since). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. You are Stella, the new Spiritfarer. You take over the job from Charon: sail a boat, collect spirits, care for them, and eventually bring each one to the Everdoor to pass on.
  2. Your boat is your base. Everything you build — guest houses, kitchen, garden, field, workshops — lives on the boat, placed on a stacking grid.
  3. Feed and hug your passengers. Spirits have moods. Feeding them food they like, hugging them and completing their requests raises their mood; ignoring them lowers it. Happy spirits make workshop jobs easier and give bonus resources.
  4. Spirits unlock your progress. Their questlines give you blueprints, new buildings and access to new areas. If you're stuck, talk to everyone on board.
  5. The Shrines are how you move further. Activating shrines gives Stella new movement abilities that open up blocked platforming on islands you've already visited. Revisit old islands after each new ability.
  6. Glim is the currency. You earn it from selling items and quests, and spend it on ship upgrades, seeds, materials and recipes.
  7. Nothing is timed or failable. The game is about pacing, not pressure. Take the time to farm, fish and explore.
  8. Saying goodbye is permanent. Once you take a spirit to the Everdoor, they leave the boat for good, along with the jobs only they helped with. Finish their chats and side requests first if you care about completion.
  9. Co-op is optional. A second local player (or Remote Play Together) can join as Daffodil the cat.

How the Game Loop Works

Spiritfarer is a management game wrapped around platforming and a story about death. A typical hour looks like this:

  1. Sail between islands on the map (the boat keeps moving while you work on deck).
  2. Dock, explore, gather resources, trade and meet characters.
  3. Take new spirits aboard, build them a guest house.
  4. Cook, craft and farm on deck to meet their requests.
  5. Upgrade the boat so it can get through obstacles and hold more buildings.
  6. When a spirit is ready, bring them to the Everdoor.

The store page estimates about 30 hours to finish and 50+ to see everything.

Your Boat and Buildings

The boat has a limited grid. Upgrading the boat (at the shipyard) expands the space and unlocks passage through new regions. Buildings stack, and you can move them around, so layout is flexible.

Building type What it does
Guest houses One per spirit; each spirit gives you the blueprint for theirs. Upgrading them improves the spirit's comfort.
Kitchen Cook meals from ingredients. The core of spirit happiness.
Garden Grow vegetables and plants from seeds; water and play music to speed growth.
Field Grow crops like wheat and cotton for cooking and weaving.
Sawmill Turn logs into planks.
Foundry Smelt ore into ingots.
Loom Turn fibers into fabric and thread.
Smithy Work ingots into more advanced metal parts.
Windmill Grind crops for cooking.
Orchard Grow trees for fruit and wood.
Workshop Advanced crafting of components.
Crusher A later processing station used in some advanced recipes.

Every crafting building has a small minigame that improves the output if you play it well — timing the sawmill cuts, managing the foundry heat, and so on. Happy spirits make these easier.

Spirits and Moods

Each spirit you ferry has a personality, a favorite food, likes and dislikes, and a story you reveal through requests. Confirmed spirits include Gwen, Atul, Alice, Summer, Stanley, Gustav, Astrid, Buck, Elena, and the pair Bruce and Mickey, among others — plus the four spirits added across the three free content updates now bundled in the Farewell Edition: Lily (a butterfly spirit), Beverly (a tiny owl), Jackie (a caretaker) and Daria (a hospital patient).

Keeping spirits happy

What spirits give you

Many spirits unlock new buildings, ship upgrades, recipes or events. Some also help directly with activities on the boat. Because their help leaves with them, it's generally smart not to rush a spirit to the Everdoor until you've seen what their questline unlocks.

Resources and Activities

Spiritfarer has a lot of small, interlocking activities. The store lists farming, mining, fishing, harvesting, cooking, weaving and crafting.

Activity How you do it What it feeds
Fishing Cast from the deck while sailing; different waters hold different fish Cooking; some requests
Gardening and fields Plant seeds, water, harvest Cooking and weaving
Mining Dig nodes on islands Foundry and smithy
Logging Chop trees on islands Sawmill
Sheep Find and shelter the lost sheep; shear them for wool Loom (fabric)
Special events Lightning, jellyfish and other sea events that appear on the map Rare materials
Trading Merchants on islands; later, a travelling shop Glim and materials

Special events

The map occasionally shows special events (like storms or creature swarms). Each gives a unique material you can only get that way, and each typically requires a specific boat building or upgrade to participate. When one appears, go for it — you'll need those materials for later upgrades.

Exploration and Movement

Recurring Side Characters

Some named characters you'll see often (confirmed by achievements):

Progression Priorities

  1. Early: Build the kitchen, garden and field immediately; get your first few spirits aboard and keep them fed.
  2. Boat upgrades: Prioritize upgrades that open new sea regions — they gate story and resources.
  3. Unlock crafting chains: Sawmill, foundry and loom early; smithy, windmill and workshop as they become available.
  4. Hunt shrines: Each new ability opens more of every island.
  5. Mid-game: Upgrade guest houses and chase every special event.
  6. Late-game: Complete collections, find all sheep, fill the recipe book, and finish side requests before final farewells.

Achievements and Missables

Most achievements can be completed at any time, but plan around these:

Achievement Requirement Tip
The happy dance Every spirit reaches ecstatic at least once Do this before taking each one to the Everdoor
Fully Improved: [spirit] Fully upgrade each spirit's house Upgrade before they leave
Spiritfared Bring all releasable spirits to the Everdoor End-game goal
Master Chef Discover all recipes Experiment in the kitchen; ingredients from every region
Collector Complete all collections Keep one of everything you find
Decked out Build every house and station at least once Includes spirit houses
Sheep Ranger / Sheep Cleaner Find and shelter all sheep / shear 50 times Shear every time you pass
Taking Out The Trash Sell 200 items Sell surplus regularly
Let it go / Loose Lips / Sealed Lips Hidden story achievements Talk to everyone often

The biggest risk is spirit-specific content — house upgrades, ecstatic mood and their requests. Before any farewell, check that the spirit's house is fully upgraded and they've hit ecstatic at least once.

Co-op with Daffodil

A second player can join as Daffodil the cat locally, and Steam Remote Play Together works too. Daffodil can do most of the gathering, crafting minigames and platforming, making co-op a relaxed way to split the chores. Story choices and management stay with Stella.
