# Solasta: Crown of the Magister: Complete Guide

A practical guide to building a strong four-hero party in Solasta, understanding how its D&D 5e (SRD 5.1) rules play out on screen, and getting through the campaign and DLC without a party wipe.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the final Crown of the Magister content (Palace of Ice DLC, May 2023; the Lightbringers Edition bundles everything). The studio is now working on Solasta II (Early Access since 12 March 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **You create all four heroes.** There are no pre-made companions. Build a balanced party: a front-liner, a healer, an arcane caster and a skill/damage specialist.
2. **It's real 5e.** Advantage/disadvantage, concentration, opportunity attacks, short and long rests, spell slots, and ability checks work like the tabletop rules.
3. **Light matters.** Many areas are dark. Characters without darkvision fight at a disadvantage in darkness; torches and Light help you but make you visible.
4. **Use verticality.** Climbing, jumping, flying (spells), high ground, falling objects and pushing enemies off ledges are all real tactics.
5. **Short rest often.** Warlocks (DLC), fighters and some other classes recover abilities on a short rest, and hit dice heal.
6. **Buy/find rations and keep them stocked.** Travel and long rests need supplies.
7. **Pick point-buy if you want predictable stats, or roll.** Rolling can make a much stronger (or weaker) hero.
8. **Save often, especially before big dialogues and fights.**

## Party Building

### A reliable first party

| Slot | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Front line | Paladin or Fighter | High AC, damage, and protects casters |
| Healer / support | Cleric | Healing, buffs, Spiritual Weapon-style damage, heavy armor on some domains |
| Arcane | Wizard (or Sorcerer) | Area damage, crowd control, utility and ritual spells |
| Skills / damage | Rogue (or Ranger) | Sneak Attack, lockpicking, traps, stealth, Perception |

This covers healing, damage, locks and traps, social skills and utility. With the DLC, swap in a **Bard** (support/skills), **Barbarian** (tank) or **Druid** (healing/control) as you like.

### Subclasses added by DLC

- **Primal Calling:** Barbarian — Path of the Berserker, Path of the Magebane, Path of Stone. Druid — Circle of the Land, Circle of Kindred Spirit, Circle of Winds.
- **Inner Strength:** Warlock — The Fiend, The Hive, The Timekeeper, The Tree. Bard — College of Lore, College of Hope, College of Heroism, College of Tradition. Monk — Way of the Open Hand, Way of Survival, Way of Light, Way of Freedom.
- **Lost Valley** (one per class): Fighter — The Commander; Rogue — The Hoodlum; Paladin — Oath of Judgment; Cleric — Mischief Domain; Wizard — Court Mage; Ranger — Swift Blade; Sorcerer — Haunted Soul; and, with Primal Calling, Barbarian — Path of Claw and Druid — Circle of Balance.

Base-game classes have their own subclasses too; read the in-game descriptions at character creation.

### Stats and character creation

- **Primary stats:** Strength (melee, heavy armor), Dexterity (finesse/ranged, AC in light armor, initiative), Constitution (HP, concentration), Intelligence (Wizard), Wisdom (Cleric, Druid, Ranger, Perception), Charisma (Paladin, Sorcerer, Warlock, Bard, dialogue).
- **Put 16+ in each character's main stat** at level 1 and good Constitution everywhere.
- **Backgrounds** give skill proficiencies and personality flags that change dialogue flavor. Pick them to spread skills: you want at least one party member good at Perception, Persuasion, Stealth, Arcana and Religion/History.
- **Ancestry perks:** darkvision is extremely useful because of the lighting system. Humans get extra flexibility, dwarves are durable, elves and halflings have strong defensive traits.

## Core Mechanics

### Light and darkness

- Areas are lit, dim or dark. Attacks against targets you can't see have disadvantage; attacking from darkness gives advantage.
- Darkvision lets a character see in darkness (in shades of gray).
- Torches, Light spells and lanterns help non-darkvision characters but reveal you and attract enemies.
- Some enemies flee light, others have darkvision and prefer to ambush you in the dark.

### Verticality and environment

- Climb walls, jump gaps, and use flight spells to reach high ground.
- **High ground** helps ranged attackers; **falling damage** is real for everyone.
- Some bridges collapse, columns and walls can be pushed over onto enemies.
- **Size matters:** small characters can use tight passages where large monsters can't follow.

### Combat economy

- Each turn: **move**, **action**, **bonus action** (if you have one), plus one **reaction** per round (opportunity attacks, Shield, Counterspell).
- **Concentration:** one concentration spell at a time; taking damage forces a Constitution save. Keep concentration casters (Bless, Hold Person, Hunter's Mark) away from the front.
- **Ready actions and positioning:** avoid giving opportunity attacks when retreating; use Disengage or bonus-action escapes.

### Resting and travel

- **Short rest:** spend hit dice to heal, recover short-rest abilities.
- **Long rest:** full recovery of HP and spell slots; requires supplies and can be interrupted by encounters in dangerous places.
- **Overland travel:** the world map uses travel pace, and encounters and discoveries happen as you move between locations.
- **Crafting:** craft potions, poisons, scrolls and enchanted items with the right tools and proficiencies, from recipes you find or buy.

## Campaign Tips (Crown of the Magister)

- The main hub is the city of **Caer Cyflen**; the story follows the Soraks and the ruins of the ancient Manacalon empire.
- **Faction reputation** with the city's factions affects vendor access and prices. Doing their side quests is worth it.
- **Loot everything** and sell junk. Magic weapons are key against later enemies with resistance to nonmagical damage.
- **Stock healing potions**, and get access to revival magic (a cleric's Revivify at level 5) as soon as you can; a downed hero can be brought back if you act in time.
- **Keep ranged options** for everyone; many fights include flying enemies and enemies across gaps.
- The **Wanderer** background (Primal Calling) comes with its own background quest.

### DLC campaigns

- **Lost Valley** is a separate campaign (levels 1–12) about a valley ruled by the tyrant **Orenetis**. It's non-linear: you choose which faction to support to escape. Monsters include giants, hags and golems.
- **Palace of Ice** continues the main story in the lands of the Snow Alliance. Characters start at level 10 and can reach 16. You can import your party from a previous save.

## Difficulty Advice

- Difficulty presets can be customized (enemy HP/damage, critical hit rules, rest restrictions and more). Tweak them to taste.
- **If you're struggling:** lower enemy damage rather than switching everything to "easy"; the tactical fun stays intact.
- **If it's too easy:** increase enemy HP and turn on stricter resting.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **A party with no healing.** Potions alone aren't enough early.
- **Fighting in the dark** with characters that can't see.
- **Casters in melee range** losing concentration.
- **Ignoring opportunity attacks** when walking away from enemies.
- **Not resting.** Spell slots and hit dice are meant to be spent and recovered.
- **Skipping Perception/Investigation** — traps and hidden loot are common.
- **Dumping Constitution** on anyone.

## Advanced Tips

- **Bless + a party of attackers** is one of the best low-level buffs in 5e.
- **Push enemies off ledges** with shove-type actions and spells — instant damage and turn loss.
- **High-ground ranged characters** with long reach dominate open fights.
- **Stack control:** Sleep early, Hold Person and similar later, then crit paralyzed targets in melee.
- **Rogue with a hand crossbow or rapier** plus reliable advantage (from darkness or allies) is consistent Sneak Attack damage.
- **Mods:** the popular community mod **Unfinished Business** adds optional rules, classes, feats and multiclassing. Keep an unmodded save and disable mods for co-op unless everyone runs the same setup.

## FAQ

**What's the level cap?**
Level 12 in the main campaign and Lost Valley; Palace of Ice takes you from 10 to 16. Dungeon Maker adventures can go to 16.

**Can I play solo?**
Yes. You control all four heroes. Co-op is optional.

**Do I need the DLC?**
No. For more class options, Primal Calling and Inner Strength are the best picks; Palace of Ice continues the story.

**Can I recruit companions?**
No. You build all four party members yourself.

**Is it like Baldur's Gate 3?**
Both use 5e rules. Solasta is more focused on tactical combat and dungeon crawling with less cinematic story.

**Should I buy Solasta II instead?**
Solasta II is in Early Access (it added online co-op and the Warlock class in its September 2026 update). Crown of the Magister is complete and has far more content today.
