A guide to Skater XL's physics-based controls, from your first push and ollie to flip tricks, grinds, grabs, lines, challenges, replays, multiplayer, and mods and custom maps.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the PC build with the "More Freedom With Grabs" update (hot patch 1.2.7.8, September 2023), the News Feed line challenges (May 2024), the World Skate Rome map (July 2024), and Mod Browser map drops through March 2025. Check the linked sources if something differs.
Skater XL's "Independent Foot Control System" maps each thumbstick to one foot. Think of the sticks as your feet on the board:
Because there are no canned animations, small differences in timing and direction change the trick. That is the point: expect a learning curve like a musical instrument, and expect it to feel great once it clicks.
| Action | How it works |
|---|---|
| Push | A face button starts a push (a community guide lists X on Xbox / Square on PlayStation; the tutorial confirms your layout) |
| Turn and carve | Triggers (combine with sticks for tighter turns) |
| Ollie | Press your back foot down on the tail with its stick, then slide the front foot up with the other stick |
| Nollie | The same motion from the nose side |
| Flip tricks | Pop, then flick the front foot stick sideways (kickflip or heelflip direction) |
| Shuvits | Pop with a sideways scoop of the back foot stick |
| Grabs | LB/RB, with either hand independently |
| Powerslide | A sideways stick motion while rolling (the tutorial shows the exact input for your stance) |
| Manuals | Balance on the nose or tail with the sticks while rolling |
| Grinds and slides | Land on a ledge or rail from an ollie; the angle of approach decides the grind |
Stance matters: whichever foot is at the back is the one you pop with, so switch and fakie flip your inputs. The in-game tutorial shows your exact layout.
If the board shoots out, slow down the front-foot slide. If you get no height, pull the back-foot stick further down before popping.
For hardflips, varials, and inward heels, one community tip: flick one stick straight to the side while flicking the other in your flip direction, both as quick straight snaps. Curved motions tend to turn a 180 shuv into an accidental 360.
Pop lightly, land, then hold the balance on the nose or tail with your sticks. Small corrections keep you up.
The "More Freedom With Grabs" update lets you grab the board at any time with LB/RB, including while riding, during manuals, grinds, powerslides, flip tricks, and pop-outs. You can hold a grab through transitions, grab at any board angle, and use either or both hands independently, which makes between-the-legs grabs, seatbelts, and crails possible.
| Map | Style |
|---|---|
| Downtown LA | Street spots around the Staples Center and LA Convention Center |
| Easy Day High School | Campus spots including the Wallenberg Big 4 and "Leap of Faith" |
| The Big Ramp | A huge mega ramp |
| Grant Park, Hüdland, Streets | Community-created maps included with the game |
| World Skate Rome | The skatepark that has hosted the skateboarding World Championships since 2022 (added July 2024) |
| Tampa Pro 2024 | Contest map (added around April 2024); some props are movable and it adds extra objects for the DIY Map Editor |
Easy Day adds community maps to the in-game Mod Browser (main menu, Maps, sort by Newest). Recent additions include:
The Mod Browser also has gear drops from real and community brands.
You can play as Tiago Lemos, Evan Smith, Tom Asta, or Brandon Westgate, or build your own skater with gear from more than 30 real skate brands, including Vans, Santa Cruz, DC Shoes, Independent, and Lakai. Evan Smith's gear was updated in May 2024 to reflect his move to Clearweather Footwear. Extra gear also arrives as DLC packs and as Mod Browser gear drops.
The DIY Map Editor lets you move and place objects to build your own spots. As of the April 2024 announcement it was reactivated in the Steam beta branch: right-click Skater XL, Properties, Betas, choose the open beta, then hold Y/Triangle for half a second in-game to open the editor. Several Mod Browser maps (for example Caramel Fingerboards Park and Lonsdale Skatepark) include droppable objects or open space for DIY builds.
The replay editor is one of the game's strengths. Use it to review your lines, slow them down, and set up camera angles for clips. Multiplayer lobbies can shoot replays together.
Free skate with up to 10 players in a lobby. Online multiplayer left open beta and came to all platforms in a free update on August 6, 2021. It is mostly for skating together and filming rather than competitive modes.
Beyond the official Mod Browser, PC players use community mods loaded through Unity Mod Manager, such as XXLMod (including the XXL3 version), which adds deep physics and stat tweaks. Custom maps and gear were historically installed via mod.io or by dropping files into the game's documents folders.
Skater XL rewards short, focused sessions more than long aimless ones. A routine many players settle into:
Skater XL launched on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on July 28, 2020, and on Nintendo Switch on December 5, 2023. Easy Day's recent map announcements target the PC Mod Browser specifically, and PC is the only platform with the Unity Mod Manager scene, so PC has the most content by far.
Can I play Skater XL with keyboard and mouse? No. A compatible controller is required.
Is there a career or story mode? No. Skater XL is a free-skate sandbox with challenges, lines, replays, and multiplayer.
How do I get new maps? Use the Mod Browser from the main menu (Maps, sort by Newest), or install mods on PC.
How many players can skate together? Up to 10 players in multiplayer free skate.
How do I grab? Press LB or RB at any time. Each hand grabs independently and you can hold grabs through transitions.
Where is the DIY Map Editor? It was reactivated in the Steam beta branch in April 2024. Opt into the open beta and hold Y/Triangle in-game.
Is Skater XL still getting updates? Easy Day continues adding community maps and gear to the Mod Browser; the most recent Steam announcements cover map drops through March 2025.
