Ryse: Son of Rome: Complete Guide

This guide covers Ryse's combat and execution system, upgrade priorities, a chapter-by-chapter outline, collectibles, Colosseum co-op, difficulty and achievement advice, and PC tweaks for the Steam version.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC patch (Patch #153, October 2014); no updates since. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Combat is rhythm, not button mashing. Enemies telegraph attacks. Block, parry, and counter, and your hit streak ("combo") grows. Taking hits breaks the streak.
  2. Executions are the reward loop. When an enemy is weak, a skull icon appears over them. Start the execution and press the button whose color the enemy flashes. Clean inputs give better rewards, but even sloppy inputs still finish the kill.
  3. Pick your execution reward on the fly. You can switch between four rewards: Health, Focus, XP, and Damage. Use Health when you're low, XP when you're safe, Focus before a big fight, and Damage for crowds.
  4. Shield bash breaks guards. Shielded and blocking enemies need a shield bash before your sword connects.
  5. Focus is your panic button. Activating Focus slows time and lets you rain fast strikes on nearby enemies. Refill it with Focus executions.
  6. Spend XP on health and focus first, then on new executions and damage.
  7. Watch for set-piece commands. In battle sections you order legionaries into testudo formation, call volleys, and man scorpions. Follow the on-screen prompts. They're scripted and quick.
  8. Grab Scrolls, Vistas, and Chronicles. These three collectible types feed several achievements, and you can replay any chapter to find missed ones.

How Combat Works

Core actions

Action Purpose Notes
Sword attack Main damage String attacks together. Mix timing to beat blocks
Shield bash Guard break and stagger Needed against shields and blocking stances
Block / parry Stops attacks. Perfect timing opens counters A perfect block just before impact is worth practicing
Evade roll Gets you out of heavy attacks and surrounds Use it on unblockable heavy swings
Execution Finisher on weakened foes Choose Health, Focus, XP, or Damage as the reward
Focus Slow-motion flurry Save it for groups and elite enemies
Pilum throw Ranged spear in some sections Handy against archers and shield walls

The PC version supports keyboard and mouse or a controller. Many players find a controller more comfortable because the game was designed for one. If you use keyboard and mouse, rebind in the options so block and shield bash sit under your fingers.

Executions in detail

Enemy types to learn

Upgrades and XP

XP comes from kills, executions (more with the XP reward selected), and combo streaks. Spend it in the upgrade menu on:

Priority Upgrade category Why
1 Health More room for mistakes on higher difficulties
2 Focus Longer and more frequent Focus windows
3 Executions More variety, plus "Marketer" (everything purchased)
4 Damage and other upgrades Faster kills. Less vital early

"Give Caesar What Is His" pops the first time you buy and use an upgrade. Buying every execution and upgrade unlocks "Marketer". Replaying chapters is the easiest way to farm the XP for it.

Difficulty

Difficulty Notes
Recruit Story-focused, forgiving timing
Soldier Standard. "My Empire Of Dirt" achievement
Centurion Much less forgiving. "Bad To The Bone"
Legendary Unlocks after you finish the campaign. Every chapter has its own Legendary achievement

Tip: Chapter select makes Legendary manageable. Upgrade fully on Soldier, then take on Legendary one chapter at a time.

Chapter Outline

The story opens with Rome under attack, then Marius tells the tale of how he got there. Chapter names match the in-game list and the Steam achievements.

# Chapter What happens (light spoilers) Achievement
1 The Beginning Defending Rome from invaders. Tutorial combat I Have A Story To Tell
2 S.P.Q.R. Tragedy at home sets Marius on his path I Will Avenge You, Father
3 Trial By Fire Landing in Britannia. Big battle set pieces Saving Private Marius
4 The King Pushing into the barbarian heartland Trouble In Sherwood Forest
5 Edge Of The World Darker, more hostile territory Heart Of Darkness
6 Pax Romanum A siege chapter Siege Me If You Can
7 The Wrath Of Nemesis The revenge story comes to a head Ave, Caesar
8 The Son Of Rome The finale Settling Old Debts

Finishing the campaign on any difficulty gives "Veni, Vidi, Vici".

Chapter tips

Collectibles

Type What it is Achievements
Scrolls Written lore items Letters From The Front (first), Ancient Scholar (all)
Vistas Scenic viewpoints to find Roman Tourist (first), Photo Album (all)
Chronicles Comic panels. Six in a level complete that level's comic Something I Found On The Way To The Forum (first), Avid Reader (one comic), Finders Keepers (all)

Replay chapters from the menu to collect missed items ("Been There, Done That" pops the first time you replay a level).

Colosseum Mode (Gladiator Co-op)

Colosseum pits you and a partner against waves of enemies in an arena that reshapes itself between rounds. Your gladiator levels up and earns gear in tiers. Achievements track tier 2, tier 5, tier 6, and rare items, plus multiplayer ranks 100, 150, and 200.

DLC Colosseum content (included on PC)

The Xbox One DLC packs are bundled with the Steam version, and their achievements name the extra Colosseum content: Barbarous ("Uh, He's Already Got One, You See"), Beacon ("Mmmm, Beacon"), False Gods ("You Shall Put No Other Gods Before Me!"), and Invictus ("Build A Bridge Out Of Her"). Each achievement asks you to complete that content, so treat them as a checklist once you've finished the campaign.

Other achievements worth planning for

Achievement Requirement Tip
First Blood / Head Executioner 1 / 100 executions in any mode Comes naturally in the campaign
Comboing My Way Through 10 enemies in a row without taking damage Early chapters with weak enemies, perfect-block everything
Monstrum Combo 25 enemies in a row without taking damage Replay an early chapter on Recruit
Bloody Centurion / Trueblood 100 kills / 1,000 executions in multiplayer Colosseum grind, easiest with a regular partner
This Is My Island / A Walk In The Park 30 environmental executions on Island / Forbidden Forest Fight near ledges and hazards in those arenas
We'll Never Survive / Survivor Play a round of Survival / play Survival on Island Quick pops

The online population for a game from 2013/2014 is very low. Plan Colosseum sessions with a friend instead of waiting on matchmaking. Online-dependent features may not work reliably this long after launch.

PC Tweaks (from the official patch notes)

Patch #153 exposed several console variables (CVars). Use them in the console or config:

CVar Effect
gfx_draw 0/1 Hide or show the HUD (for screenshots)
i_forcefeedback 0/1 Controller rumble off or on
r_PostAASharpening 0 to 2 Image sharpening (default 0.2)
sys_highrestimer = 1 Add to system.cfg to get past FPS limits on some systems

The same patch improved SLI/Crossfire and fixed crashes and corruption at resolutions above 1080p. Launch-week hotfixes dealt with Steam Cloud saves being lost and a frozen cutscene in Pax Romanum.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Advanced Tips

FAQ

How long is Ryse: Son of Rome? The campaign is short, commonly six to eight hours, plus whatever time you spend in Colosseum and on Legendary.

Does the PC version include the DLC? Yes. The Steam release bundles the original game with all of its DLC.

Is Legendary unlocked from the start? No. Legendary unlocks after you finish the campaign. An early bug let it be selected with the mouse before then, and Patch #153 fixed that.

Can I play Colosseum solo? Colosseum is designed for two-player co-op, but you can fight in it alone. The co-op achievements need a partner.

My save disappeared after launch. What happened? A launch-day Steam Cloud sync bug erased some saves. The 10 October 2014 hotfix fixed the sync, but saves already lost couldn't be recovered.

Should I use a controller? It's recommended. The execution prompts and combat timing were designed around a gamepad.
