Resident Evil 7 Biohazard: Walkthrough & Survival Guide

A spoiler-light guide to surviving the Baker estate: inventory and resource rules, a walkthrough outline of every area, how to handle each Baker boss, collectibles and missables, Madhouse advice, and what the DLC adds.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the May 11, 2026 PC update (Windows 11 compatibility verified, HDR and progression fixes). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Save at tape recorders in safe rooms. On Easy and Normal saving is free; on Madhouse you need a Cassette Tape for each save. Safe rooms also have item boxes, and enemies won't follow you in.
  2. Your inventory is tiny. You start with limited slots and expand it with Backpacks. Keep ammo you're not using, spare keys and crafting parts in the item box.
  3. Chemical Fluid is your most valuable crafting item. Combine it with Herbs for First Aid Med, with gunpowder for ammo, or keep it for Psychostimulants (which reveal nearby items briefly). Early on, favor healing.
  4. Aim for the head, then back off. Molded enemies absorb a lot of body damage. Headshots and a few steps of retreat save ammo.
  5. Block with your arms. Raising your guard reduces damage a lot, even from bosses. Block, then counter when there's an opening.
  6. You can't kill Jack early. When he's stalking you in the Main House, break line of sight and leave rather than wasting ammo.
  7. Look for Antique Coins and Mr. Everywhere statuettes. Coins buy permanent upgrades at birdcages; statuettes are for achievements.
  8. Read documents and watch videotapes. Videotapes are playable flashbacks and often show you where something is hidden in the present.
  9. Easy is a legitimate choice. Your first run is about atmosphere; Madhouse is the real challenge, unlocked later.
  10. Enable ray tracing if you can. The DirectX 12 ray-traced version is the supported build; Capcom ended technical support for the DX11 non-ray-tracing branch on July 12, 2023.

Difficulty

Mode What changes

How do I unlock Madhouse? Clear the game once.

Which PC version should I use? The default DirectX 12 ray-tracing build. Capcom ended support for the DX11 non-RT build in July 2023.

Is Not a Hero free? Yes, Not a Hero is free DLC. End of Zoe is paid (both are included in Gold Edition).

Is there a new Resident Evil after this? Resident Evil Village is the direct sequel. Resident Evil Requiem launched February 27, 2026, and Resident Evil Veronica (a Code Veronica remake) is announced for 2027.
