Red Dead Redemption 2: Story Walkthrough & Red Dead Online Guide

A guide to Red Dead Redemption 2's story mode (chapter outline, systems, missables, and 100% tips) plus a starter's guide to Red Dead Online: roles, money, Gold Bars, and the current monthly event.

Researched September 2026 — story mode is feature-complete. Red Dead Online is current as of the September 1 to October 5, 2026 Moonshiner monthly event. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Take your time in Chapter 2. The world opens up there. Hunt, fish, do Strangers missions, and upgrade camp before the story starts moving faster.
  2. Bond with your horse. Brush, feed, and pat it. Higher bond improves stamina, handling, and unlocks tricks.
  3. Keep your cores up. Health, Stamina, and Dead Eye each have a core that drains over time. Eat, sleep, and use tonics to refill them.
  4. Honor matters. Good actions raise Honor, bad ones lower it. It changes shop discounts, some dialogue, and the ending.
  5. Donate to the camp ledger and buy upgrades. Pearson's provisions, Arthur's lodging, and the fast travel map in Arthur's tent are the key upgrades.
  6. Clean your guns. Dirty guns lose damage and accuracy. Use Gun Oil.
  7. Use your satchel and horse saddlebags for carcasses and pelts. Perfect-quality pelts are worth far more, so use the right weapon for the animal.
  8. Fast travel takes a while to unlock. Buy the camp map upgrade, and use trains and stagecoaches in the meantime.
  9. For Red Dead Online: Buy the Collector or Bounty Hunter role first, do daily challenges, and use this month's triple-reward bonuses.

Core Systems (Story Mode)

Cores and bars

Core Refill with
Health Food, tonics, sleep
Stamina Food, tonics, rest
Dead Eye Tobacco, Dead Eye tonics, sleep

The bars (outer rings) grow as you use the related actions. Health grows from taking damage and recovering, Stamina from running and swimming, and Dead Eye from using Dead Eye.

Dead Eye

Dead Eye slows time so you can mark targets. It gets better as the story goes on, with more options unlocked by chapter progress.

Horse bonding

Bond goes from level 1 to 4. Each level improves your horse's health, stamina, and handling, and unlocks new tricks such as rearing and skid turns. You can see what's unlocked on the horse's stats page. Reaching level 4 unlocks the "Best Buddies" achievement.

Horses keep their bond when you stable them. If a horse dies, you lose the bond with it.

Red Dead Online Basics

Red Dead Online is the multiplayer mode, also sold as a standalone game. You make your own character, pick missions, and work up through roles.

Currencies

Currency Used for
RDO$ (cash) Weapons, clothing, ammo, horses, supplies
Gold Bars Role licenses, premium items, some horses and camp upgrades
Capitale Currency from the Blood Money content, used for Crimes

Roles

Role How it pays Notes
Collector Find collectibles and sell sets to Madam Nazar Strong for RDO$ and XP
Bounty Hunter Capture bounties alive for more pay Best for Gold Bars early
Trader Supply Cripps with pelts and carcasses, deliver goods Passive money with camp upgrades
Moonshiner Brew and sell moonshine from a shack Requires the shack. Weak at low rank but good later.
Naturalist Sedate and sample animals, and sell samples to Harriet Slow money. Unlocks the Wilderness Camp.

Role license costs vary. A guide we checked lists 15 Gold Bars for the Collector, Trader, and Bounty Hunter licenses, but Rockstar changes prices and runs discounts, so check the in-game catalogue.

Money and Gold tips

September 2026 event: Moonshiner triple rewards (September 1 to October 5)

Week Reward
Sept 1–7 Ta-Da emote
Sept 8–14 This Guy emote
Sept 15–21 Black Woodland Gloves
Sept 22–28 Blue Plaid Cap
Sept 29–Oct 5 Black Winter Shotgun Coat

If you already own Moonshiner, this is the best time of year to rank it up. If you don't, it's still an expensive role to buy and slow early, so a newer player is better off starting with Collector or Bounty Hunter.

Red Dead Online starter path

  1. Finish the opening missions and the first story arcs.
  2. Buy Collector or Bounty Hunter first, then Trader for passive income.
  3. Buy the Moonshiner shack once you have spare Gold and can grind during a bonus event.
  4. Upgrade your horse and weapons when you can: a better horse and a repeater or rifle.
  5. Do daily challenges every day.

FAQ

How long is the story? Most players take roughly 50 to 60 hours for the story. A 100% run takes much longer.

Can I miss anything permanently? Yes. Guarma content (Chapter 5), some of Arthur's Stranger missions, and camp activities are missable. Most collectibles can still be done in the epilogue.

How do I get perfect pelts? Use the right weapon for the animal's size and go for clean headshots. Study the animal with binoculars first to check its quality.

What's the best Red Dead Online role for beginners? Collector for money and XP, or Bounty Hunter for Gold Bars.

Is Red Dead Online still getting updates? Yes, but mostly monthly events, bonuses, and returning rewards rather than big new content. September 2026 is a Moonshiner triple-rewards event.

Does Honor affect the ending? Yes. Arthur's Honor changes some ending scenes and outcomes.
