Red Dead Online: Complete Guide

Everything a new or returning outlaw needs in Red Dead Online on PC: how the game stands in 2026, which Role to buy first, how to earn cash and Gold efficiently, and the habits that separate comfortable ranchers from broke drifters.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the post-2022 "maintenance" era (latest new content verified: Strange Tales of the West Vol. 1 telegram missions, July 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status note: Red Dead Online is still online and playable on PC, PS4 and Xbox One (and on newer consoles via backward compatibility). In July 2022 Rockstar announced it would stop major updates and focus on smaller missions and expansions of existing modes while resources moved to GTA VI. Since then content has arrived as seasonal events, bonus weeks and small mission drops rather than big expansions. Plan around the content that already exists — there's a lot of it.

Quick Start

  1. Finish the introductory story missions. They unlock core systems (camp, fast travel, catalogue items) and pay decent early cash and XP.
  2. Your first Gold Bars go into a Role, not cosmetics. Roles (Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Naturalist, Moonshiner) are where the money is.
  3. Do Daily Challenges every day. They're the main steady source of Gold for players who don't spend real money, and streaks increase the payout.
  4. Play in a Defensive posture while you learn. Defensive mode reduces random griefing and makes you harder to lock onto.
  5. Keep a Dead Eye and health tonic stock. Crafting or buying tonics, and eating before long sessions, keeps cores full.
  6. Bond with one horse early. Horse bonding boosts handling, unlocks tricks (like rearing), and makes it dramatically easier to get around.
  7. Use your camp and Cripps. Once you're a Trader, Cripps turns your hunted materials into sellable goods on autopilot.
  8. Check the weekly bonuses. Rockstar still runs rotating bonus events (extra XP, discounts, bonus rewards) via the Newswire.

Core Systems

Currencies

Currency Earned by Spend it on

Gold Bars Daily Challenges, rank-ups, streaks, role milestones, purchase Roles, premium items, some horses/cosmetics

Progression

Ability cards

Ability cards are your "loadout perks" (for example Dead Eye cards, passive health/stamina cards, and combat cards). Invest in:

Roles (in the order most players buy them)

Role NPC / how to start Why buy it Notes
Trader Cripps at your camp, buying the Butcher Table Passive income from goods delivery Deliver in a wagon; distant deliveries pay more but carry more risk
Bounty Hunter Any Bounty Board, buying the Bounty Hunter License Steady cash and gold from bounties; Legendary Bounties Prestigious Bounty Hunter License adds 10 more ranks (to 30)
Collector Madam Nazar, buying the Collector's Bag Collectible sets sell for good money; exploring gets profitable Madam Nazar's location rotates daily
Moonshiner Maggie Fike, buying a Moonshine Shack High-value moonshine sales from a hidden shack Historically needed Trader Rank 5 before you could start
Naturalist Harriet Davenport (Sample Kit) or Gus Macmillan Sample animals, earn rewards, Legendary animals Harriet and Gus take opposing stances on killing animals

Gold costs are listed in the catalogue; discounts rotate, and newcomers regularly get discounts on the Bounty Hunter License and other first role purchases (for example, Rockstar ran a 5 Gold Bar discount on the Bounty Hunter License in 2020).

Recent content (2022–2025)

No major new content for 2026 had been announced when this guide was researched — if something new drops, it will be on the Rockstar Newswire first.

Telegram missions: the easiest content to overlook

Telegram missions are picked up as telegrams (most are launched from a post office). They're short, replayable and pay cash plus XP. The newer ones (Hardcore, Bodyguard and Strange Tales) are the freshest content in the game, so they're a good way to see something new if you're returning after a long break.

Money Making (practical priorities)

  1. Daily Challenges and Role Challenges — consistent gold.
  2. Trader deliveries — best passive income.
  3. Bounties — quick cash, fun with friends.
  4. Collector sets — scale with exploration; highest profits when done in bulk.
  5. Moonshiner — solid if you enjoy the loop.
  6. Legendary Bounties and Opportunities — best for posses.

Avoid buying everything in the catalogue early. Invest in roles, a good horse, and a solid weapon kit first.

A New Player's First Week

Day Focus
Day 1 Character creation and the intro story missions. Claim any login rewards. Buy a better rifle or repeater than the starter gun if cash allows.
Day 2 Start Daily Challenges. Pick your first Role with Gold (Bounty Hunter if you want action, Trader if you want passive income).
Day 3 If Trader: hunt around your camp and feed Cripps materials and supplies; save toward a bigger delivery wagon. If Bounty Hunter: run Bounty Board targets alive.
Day 4 Keep your Daily streak. Start bonding one good horse and buy saddle/stirrup upgrades at a stable.
Day 5 Unlock and upgrade your first ability cards (a Dead Eye card plus a health or damage-resistance passive).
Day 6–7 Save Gold for the next Role. Try Blood Money Crimes in Saint Denis for Capitale, or a Legendary Bounty with friends.

Guiding principle: gold goes into things that earn more gold (Roles, key upgrades), cash goes into things that keep you alive (weapons, horse, tonics, ammo).

Combat & Loadout Basics

Playing Solo vs in a Posse

Situation Solo Posse
Trader deliveries Fine for local runs; long-distance runs are exposed to theft Escorts make long-distance deliveries much safer
Bounty Board targets Very doable; the default way most players grind Faster, and group targets are much easier to take alive
Legendary Bounties Possible on lower difficulty Recommended on higher difficulty
Blood Money Opportunities Hard; built for groups Where they shine
Collector / Naturalist Ideal — relaxed exploring Less efficient, more social

Tip for solo players: if a lobby turns hostile, don't fight it out — switch to Defensive, finish your job, or simply find a new session. Your time is better spent earning than trading kills.

Returning Player Checklist

  1. Check your Awards menu for claimable role and rank rewards you missed.
  2. Restock supplies for Cripps — production stalls when supplies run out while you're away.
  3. Re-upgrade your ability card loadout if you've gained ranks since you last played.
  4. Play the newest telegram missions (Bodyguard, Strange Tales) — the freshest content in the game.
  5. Look at the Newswire for the current bonus week before choosing what to grind.
