A spoiler-light survival guide to Rain World and its two DLCs: how cycles, food, and karma work, movement techniques that make the game click, the creatures that will kill you most, how to pick a slugcat, and how to find your way without a walkthrough ruining the mystery.
Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 1.11.8 (April 2026), with the Downpour and The Watcher DLCs. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Each "cycle" is a day. The cycle timer (shown on the karma symbol when you bring up the HUD) tells you roughly how long until rain. Light rain and rumbling are warnings; once the downpour starts, you have very little time. Some areas flood, others get crushed by the heavy rain.
Rule of thumb: know where the nearest shelter is at all times. Shelters appear on your map once found.
Passages are long-term achievements shown on the hibernation screen (for example, The Survivor and The Hunter). Completing one lets you fast travel to a shelter you have visited, which is a lifesaver on long journeys.
Rain World's movement feels floaty at first. Learn these and it becomes precise. Default binds are listed in the game's input settings as Jump, Pick-Up, Throw, Map, and Pause.
| Technique | How | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Pole climbing | Hold Up on vertical poles | Escaping upward fast |
| Wall jump | Press Jump while sliding down a wall | Climbing shafts |
| Charge pounce | Crouch and hold Jump until the back arches, then release | Long horizontal leaps |
| Backflip | Jump immediately after turning around while running | High jumps |
| Belly slide | Crouch while running, then jump to carry the slide's momentum | Crossing rooms quickly |
| Ledge grab | Jump toward a ledge; the slugcat grabs and vaults up | Recovering from short jumps |
Spear tips:
| Creature | Threat | How to deal with it |
|---|---|---|
| Green Lizard | Tough, slow, grabs anything | Outrun it; do not fight early |
| Pink Lizard | Fast climber, common early | Break line of sight; spears to the head help |
| Blue Lizard | Weaker bite, but climbs walls and has a long tongue | Keep moving, keep your distance |
| White Lizard | Camouflaged | Watch for shimmer and tongue |
| Black Lizard | Blind; hunts by sound | Move slowly |
| Red Lizard | Very dangerous | Avoid entirely |
| Vulture | Swoops from above in open areas | Hide in tunnels and pipes |
| King Vulture | Harpoon-armed vulture | Hide in tunnels |
| Miros Bird | Long-legged runner | Stay above it on poles or in pipes |
| Daddy Long Legs | Grabs anything nearby | Keep far away |
| Leviathan | Giant eel in deep water | Do not swim across open water carelessly |
| Scavengers | Smart, armed, social | Leave them alone, or trade pearls for friendly relations |
| Centipedes | Electric shock on contact | Throw spears from distance |
| Pole Plant / Monster Kelp | Looks like scenery, grabs you | Watch for plants that move |
General survival rules:
The base game has three slugcats. Downpour adds five more, and The Watcher adds one.
| Slugcat | Style | How to unlock (per the community wiki) |
|---|---|---|
| Monk | Easier; needs only 3 food pips to hibernate | Available from the start |
| Survivor | The standard campaign; 4 food pips | Available from the start |
| Hunter | Harder; faster, eats creature corpses, needs 6 food pips | Finish the game as Monk or Survivor |
| Gourmand (Downpour) | Heaviest slugcat, 7 food pips; can combine items into new ones | Unlocks alongside Hunter |
| Artificer (Downpour) | Explosive double jump, can maul enemies | Unlocks alongside Hunter |
| Rivulet (Downpour) | Fast, aquatic, short cycles | Finish campaigns as Gourmand, Artificer, or Hunter |
| Spearmaster (Downpour) | Generates spears, feeds by spearing creatures | Finish campaigns as Gourmand, Artificer, or Hunter |
| Saint (Downpour) | Cannot eat meat or throw spears; tongue grapple | Finish Rivulet and Spearmaster |
| Watcher (The Watcher) | Exploration-focused; unique mechanics | Listed as unlocking after finishing as Monk or Survivor |
Downpour also has a hidden joke slugcat, Inv, entered with a code rather than unlocked normally.
Which to start with: Survivor for the intended experience, Monk if you want less pressure. Save the DLC slugcats until after you have finished at least one base campaign. They assume you know the world.
The base game has 12 regions, including Outskirts (where you start), Industrial Complex, Drainage System, Garbage Wastes, Shoreline, Shaded Citadel, Chimney Canopy, Sky Islands, Farm Arrays, The Exterior, Subterranean, and Five Pebbles. Downpour adds 10 more, and The Watcher adds 30.
Navigation tips:
Downpour (PC January 2023) adds five slugcats with their own stories, 10 regions, and modes including Expedition (randomized missions with unlockable perks and burdens), Challenges, and Safari (watch the ecosystem and control creatures). It also brought Remix (a settings menu to adjust many rules) and Jolly Co-op (up to 4 players in the campaign).
The Watcher (PC March 2025, with extra content in September 2025) adds the Watcher slugcat, 30 new regions, dozens of creatures, and 4 endings. Patch 1.11.8 (April 2026) fixed several ending bugs, including the Watcher's final ending sequence not progressing when certain conditions were met. If your Watcher ending seemed stuck, update and try again.
How do I raise my karma cap? Find Echoes in certain regions. The first raises your cap from 5 to 7; each additional one adds 1.
What is the minimum food to hibernate? It depends on the slugcat. Your food bar shows a marker for the minimum.
Is Rain World hard? Yes, by design. Monk and the Remix options make it more approachable.
Which DLC first? Downpour, after finishing a base campaign. The Watcher is a large standalone-feeling expansion that assumes you know the game.
Can I play co-op? Yes. Jolly Co-op (from Downpour) supports up to 4 players in the campaign, and Arena supports local multiplayer.
How do I fast travel? Complete a Passage. You can then use it to jump to a shelter you have visited.
What was patch 1.11.8? An April 2026 bug-fix patch that fixed Watcher's and Artificer's ending sequences, some console crashes, and Steam Workshop upload failures.
