Project Zomboid (Build 42): Survival Guide

A survival guide for Project Zomboid Build 42. It covers character creation, your first days, combat, the new crafting and animal systems, base building, and long-term self-sufficiency in the expanded Knox County.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Build 42.20 stable (released July 29, 2026), with 42.21 on the unstable branch since September 26, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Build 42 is now the stable branch. Build 42.20 brought multiplayer to stable. Build 41 saves don't work in Build 42, and there is no conversion tool. If you want to keep playing an old B41 save, look for a Build 41 legacy branch in Steam under Properties, then Game Versions and Betas.
  2. Never fight in the open when you can avoid it. Noise draws zombies from far away. Sneak, walk, and close doors behind you.
  3. Wear protective clothing. Leather jackets, padded clothing, and helmets reduce bite and scratch chances. A single bite means infection with the default settings.
  4. Carry a bag and check its capacity and weight reduction. Encumbrance slows you down and wears you out.
  5. Get a reliable weapon early. Crowbars, axes, and long blunt weapons are durable and strong. Build 42 melee weapons have separate condition for the head, handle, and edge, so keep spares.
  6. Water and power won't last. The water and electricity shut off after a random number of days (set in Sandbox). Fill every container you can before the shutoff.
  7. Read the right skill books. Skill books multiply XP gains for a skill range. Build 42 made reading and literacy matter more, so look at the Illiterate trait carefully.
  8. Scout from a distance. Use windows and the second floor to look before you move. At night, Build 42's new lighting makes the dark much more dangerous.
  9. Plan an exit before every fight. Never enter a building without knowing how you'll get out.
  10. Take breaks from combat. Endurance and exhaustion matter. Fighting while tired or panicking makes you miss and slip up.

Character Creation

Traits cost or give points. Trait lists and point costs have been adjusted during Build 42 updates, so confirm names and costs in the character creator before you commit. Good beginner priorities:

Strong positive traits

Negative traits that are usually safe to take for points

Good starting professions

Unemployed gives the most points to spend on traits.

First Day Priorities

  1. Loot your start house. Take a bag, kitchen knife, cooking pot, water bottles, canned food, and any flashlight.
  2. Find a real weapon. Look in garages, sheds, and tool stores for crowbars, hammers, axes, and shovels. Avoid cheap weapons that break quickly.
  3. Fill water containers. Sinks and bathtubs work until the water shutoff. Any empty bottle or pot counts. Build 42.21 added dozens more fluid containers that can be used to purify water.
  4. Pick a quiet safehouse. Look for a building away from main roads, with a second floor or good visibility. Close the curtains.
  5. Eat perishables first. Fridge food spoils quickly once the power goes out. Save canned and dry food.
  6. Learn to barricade windows, but don't lock yourself in with no escape.

Combat

Health and Survival

Problem Fix
Scratch or laceration Disinfect, bandage, and change bandages often
Deep wound Remove glass or bullets if needed, then suture and bandage
Fracture Splint and rest
Burn Clean bandage and rest
Illness from bad food Rest, eat and drink, and avoid spoiled food
Cold or wet Dry off indoors and add layers
Depression and boredom Read books or magazines, listen to music, and eat good food

A zombie bite is always infectious with default settings. Scratches and lacerations only have a chance to infect. Keep your clothing in good shape to reduce the risk.

FAQ

Is Build 42 stable now? Yes. Build 42.20 became the stable branch on July 29, 2026. Build 42.21 is available on the unstable branch as of late September 2026.

Can I continue my Build 41 save? No. B41 and B42 saves are not compatible. To keep playing a B41 save, switch to a Build 41 legacy branch in Steam Betas if one is listed.

Does Build 42 have multiplayer? Yes. Multiplayer is included in the Build 42 stable release, with server-authoritative inventory and anti-cheat checks.

How do I opt into unstable? In your Steam Library, right-click Project Zomboid, open Properties, go to Game Versions and Betas, and select the unstable branch.

What's the best starting location? Rosewood and Riverside are the classic beginner picks because they're quieter. West Point and Muldraugh have more loot but more zombies. The Build 42 map has new and redesigned towns, so explore.

How do I cure a zombie bite? With default settings, you can't. Some sandbox settings let you change infection chance or turn it off.

What's the fastest way to level carpentry? Build and disassemble furniture and walls. Carpentry skill books and the Carpenter profession make it much faster.
