POLYGON: Multiplayer Shooter: Complete Guide

A practical guide to POLYGON, the free Early Access team shooter on Unreal Engine 5. It covers modes, maps, weapons and attachments, progression and currencies, settings for older PCs, and how to actually win Conquest rounds. It also explains where the project stands now that the developer is building POLYGON //.

Researched September 2026, current as of patch 0.7.11 (24 November 2025) and the Weapon XP backend fix (19 February 2026). Update 0.8 is announced but has no date. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Project status: POLYGON is still in Early Access. The latest content patch is 0.7.11 (November 2025). Since February 2026 the developer's news has focused on POLYGON //, a new version built from scratch with large-scale maps, vehicles and a full destruction system, funded partly through Patreon/Boosty. The original game is still online and free to play, but expect few big updates while POLYGON // is in development.

Quick Start

  1. It's free on Steam and made by a very small team (the store page says it was originally developed by one person, Nick of Redaster Studio).
  2. Start with Conquest. Teams fight over capture points on large maps, and it's the best mode for learning maps and weapons.
  3. Play the objective. Capturing and holding points wins Conquest, not your K/D.
  4. Squad up with friends. The game supports squads so you can fight together.
  5. Pick one weapon and level it. Weapon XP unlocks attachments and skins for that gun, so spreading your time across every gun slows your unlocks.
  6. Customise attachments for your range. Sights, grips, muzzles and accessories change how a gun handles.
  7. Try Hardcore once you're comfortable. Max health drops to 60 in Hardcore servers (a permanent modifier since November 2025), so positioning matters more.
  8. Lower settings if you need frames. The game is meant to run on older PCs.

Modes

Mode What it is Notes
Conquest Large-team battle over capture points Usually 16v16. Some maps have jets and helicopters.
King of the Hill Fight over a single central zone Smaller player counts (Sandstorm KotH launched as 12v12)
Hardcore (modifier) Max health reduced to 60 Select it when creating a server
Event modifiers Limited-time rules, for example Low Gravity and 64-player Valley Announced on Steam and Discord

Maps

Maps confirmed in official patch notes and events:

Map Notes
Valley The big open classic. It also has a King of the Hill version (patch 0.7.8.2) and ran a 64-player "Total Mayhem" event.
Sandstorm Desert map (patch 0.7.2) with Conquest 16v16 and King of the Hill 12v12
Sandstorm Night Permanent dust storm, low visibility. Permanent in Conquest and KotH since 0.7.11, with jets and helicopters.
Crash Site / Night Crash Site Night Crash Site added in 0.7.5 "The Art of War"
Cargo Also has a Halloween variant
Seasonal maps Ominous Valley (Halloween 2023), The Haunted Ship (Halloween 2025)

The store page also mentions tight subway-style locations alongside wide open valleys. Adjust your loadout to the map.

Weapons and Attachments

The store says every weapon is based on a real-world model, and the categories are assault rifles, PDWs, LMGs, DMRs and sniper rifles, plus pistols. Weapons named in patch notes and skin lists include:

Class Examples
Assault rifles / carbines AK47, AK12, G36C, AK308, AS "VAL"
PDW/SMG Kriss Vector
DMR / sniper VSS, M24
Pistols Glock 17, Desert Eagle

Attachments: sights, handles/grips (patch 0.7.5 added the Angled Grip), muzzle devices and accessories.

Mechanics worth knowing:

Loadout picks by situation

Situation Pick
Open maps (Valley, Sandstorm) A DMR or sniper (VSS, M24), or an AR with a magnified sight
Close quarters and night maps A PDW (Kriss Vector) or a short-barrel AR (G36C, AS "VAL") with a close sight
All-round An AK-platform rifle with a grip and a mid-range sight

Progression and Currencies

Winning Conquest

  1. Split sensibly. Don't send the whole team to one point. Hold what you own and send a squad to take the next one.
  2. Capture, then defend from cover rather than standing on the flag.
  3. Watch the flank. Big maps have long flanking routes. Check your minimap and listen for footsteps.
  4. Deal with vehicles. On maps with jets and helicopters, stay in cover when they're overhead and focus them when they land or hover low.
  5. Swap teams if they're lopsided. The game rebalances teams based on the previous match's score (improved in 0.7.10), and there's a Change Teams button (0.7.8.2).
