# Planet Coaster: Complete Guide

A builder-and-manager's guide to the original Planet Coaster (2016): the three game modes, how guests and money actually work, coaster design that scores well, staff and layout rules, and how the game compares to Planet Coaster 2.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (the game is complete and no longer receiving content updates; Planet Coaster 2 launched on 6 November 2024). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Start in Career mode.** Its early scenarios teach placement, pricing, and ride ratings with gentle objectives.
2. **Paths first, then rides.** Lay a main loop path from the entrance so every ride and shop connects to it. Dead ends and spaghetti paths confuse guests and kill ride throughput.
3. **Put facilities next to ride exits.** Food, drink, and toilets near exits catch guests exactly when they need them.
4. **Check ride ratings before opening.** Every ride shows **Excitement, Fear, and Nausea**. High excitement with moderate fear and low nausea is the goal.
5. **Test coasters before opening.** Run a test to generate ratings, catch crashes, and check g-force warnings.
6. **Hire mechanics and janitors early.** Broken rides and litter tank your park rating fast.
7. **Raise prices gradually.** Watch guest thoughts; if they say a ride is "too expensive", you went too far.
8. **Use scenery near queues and rides.** Scenery increases a ride's appeal and prestige ratings, raising what guests are willing to pay.
9. **Take the Steam Workshop seriously.** Download community coasters and buildings to fill a park quickly while you learn.

## Game Modes

| Mode | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Career | Scenarios with objectives (star ratings, money, guest counts) across a series of parks | Learning the management side |
| Challenge | Like Sandbox but with limited money and research, at Easy, Medium, or Hard; the game offers optional challenges that reward money or park-rating boosts | Pure management practice |
| Sandbox | Unlimited money, everything unlocked | Building and creative projects |
| Scenario Editor | Build your own objective-based scenarios from saved parks and share them on the Steam Workshop (added in update 1.4.0, the Anniversary Update, 22 November 2017) | Community content |

Career scenarios have tiered objectives. You don't need to finish every tier to move on, so skip a stubborn objective and come back later.

## Core Management Systems

### Guests

Every guest has needs (hunger, thirst, toilet, energy, happiness), a budget, and preferences for rides. Click a guest to see their thoughts; the **guest thoughts panel** summarizes the whole park and is the fastest way to diagnose problems.

Common thoughts and what they mean:

| Thought | Fix |
|---|---|
| "I'm hungry/thirsty" | More food and drink stalls, especially along long paths and near exits |
| "I need the toilet" | Toilets every few ride clusters |
| "This path is dirty" / vomit | More janitors; lower nausea rides or place toilets and benches near intense rides |
| "Too expensive" | Lower prices on that ride or shop |
| "Can't find X" | Better path layout and signage, or add more of that facility |
| "Queue is too long" | Increase capacity (more trains/cars) or build a second similar ride |

### Money

- **Pay-per-ride vs park entry:** you can charge at the gate, per ride, or both. A modest entry fee with fair ride prices is safe for most scenarios.
- **Shops** are the steady income backbone. Adjust recipes (for example, more salt increases drink sales), but guest satisfaction drops if you push too far.
- **Loans** are available; take one early if it lets you build a strong starter ride, then pay it back.
- **Marketing campaigns** bring in more guests; run them when you have capacity to handle them.

### Research

Unlock new rides, shops, and upgrades through research. Assign research to the category you need (for example, coasters in a scenario that demands a high-excitement coaster). Research costs money over time, so don't leave it running on categories you don't need.

### Staff

| Staff | Job | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Janitors | Clean paths, empty bins | Assign work zones so they don't wander |
| Mechanics | Repair and inspect rides | Keep inspection intervals reasonable; breakdowns hurt ratings |
| Entertainers | Raise guest happiness in queues and crowds | Station them near long queues |
| Security | Deter crime (the crime system arrived in the Spring 2017 update) | Needed once crime appears in larger parks |
| Vendors | Operate shops | Train them to improve service |

Staff need **staff rooms** to rest. Keep staff rooms hidden behind scenery but close to their work zones. Train staff and give raises when they complain; unhappy staff work slower or quit.

### Park rating and prestige

Park rating combines guest happiness, cleanliness, ride variety, and scenery. **Ride prestige** comes from scenery near rides and queues and affects what you can charge. Scenery literally makes money in Planet Coaster, so don't treat it as optional decoration.

## Coaster Design That Scores Well

Coasters are the heart of the game. Good ratings come from a few principles:

1. **Lift hill height sets your energy budget.** A taller first drop gives more speed and excitement.
2. **Avoid sharp transitions.** Sudden changes in banking and direction spike lateral and vertical g-forces, raising nausea and triggering warnings.
3. **Use banking on turns.** Smooth banking keeps lateral g-forces low.
4. **Vary the elements.** Airtime hills, a well-placed inversion, and near-misses with scenery all raise excitement.
5. **Tunnel and terrain-hug for near-miss bonuses.** Running close to terrain, scenery, or other track increases excitement.
6. **Check the ratings graph** after each test. Red segments in the g-force view show where to smooth track.
7. **Match the audience.** Some guests prefer gentle rides, others thrill rides. A park needs both.

**Starter targets:** a coaster with high excitement, moderate fear, and low nausea sells well. Extreme fear or nausea narrows the audience, even if excitement is high.

**Useful tools:**
- **Auto-complete** closes a circuit for you; use it, then smooth the result by hand.
- **Adjust pieces one at a time** (length, banking, pitch) to remove kinks; re-test after each change.
- **Grid and snapping** options help with precise placement.
- **Custom supports** and support styles make coasters look finished.

## Layout Rules of Thumb

- **One main loop:** a wide main path with branches to themed areas. Guests follow paths; circular layouts prevent crowds piling up.
- **Queues with scenery:** themed queues raise prestige and reduce "queue too long" complaints.
- **Exits back to the main path**, with a food or drink stall nearby.
- **Toilets and benches** near intense rides.
- **Transport rides** (trains, monorails) help large parks; guests use them to cross long distances.
- **Hide staff paths:** staff-only paths keep janitors and mechanics out of guest traffic.

## Building and Scenery

Planet Coaster's piece-by-piece building system is the reason many people still play it.

- **Blueprints:** save groups of pieces as blueprints and reuse them.
- **Advanced move:** rotate and position pieces precisely; hold the modifier keys shown in the build bar to adjust in smaller steps.
- **Terrain tools:** raise, lower, smooth, flatten, and paint terrain; build caves and tunnels.
- **Groups:** grouping pieces lets you move whole buildings.
- **Workshop:** subscribe to items and they appear in-game under the Workshop tab.

## DLC Overview

The base game is complete on its own. DLC adds themed scenery and rides:

| DLC | Adds |
|---|---|
| Spooky Pack (Sep 2017) | Horror-themed scenery and rides |
| Adventure Pack (Dec 2017) | Jungle/adventure theme |
| Studios Pack (Mar 2018) | Movie-studio theme |
| Vintage Pack (Jul 2018) | Nostalgic, fairground-style buildings and scenery |
| World's Fair Pack (Oct 2018) | Global-culture, world's-fair theme |
| Magnificent Rides Collection (Dec 2018) | Rides inspired by famous fairground and park attractions |
| Classic Rides Collection (Apr 2019) | Classic rides |
| Construction kits | Licensed vehicles (Back to the Future Time Machine, Knight Rider K.I.T.T., The Munsters Koach) |

Free updates also added a lot after launch: the Winter Update (December 2016), the Spring Update (April 2017, crime and security), the Summer Update (June 2017, a firework creation tool and custom images/video), and the Anniversary Update (November 2017, Scenario Editor, new coasters, and relaxed track restrictions).

The **Ghostbusters** pack stopped being sold on 6 September 2024 after its license expired; people who bought it keep it. Planet Coaster regularly goes deeply discounted during Steam sales (80% off the base game and 60% off the packs in the 2026 Summer Sale), and the Planet Coaster Franchise Bundle with Planet Coaster 2 was 66% off in the same sale.

**Console Edition:** a separate console version launched in November 2020 (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS5) with a tutorial and a revamped, voice-acted career mode. This guide focuses on PC.

## Planet Coaster vs Planet Coaster 2

| | Planet Coaster | Planet Coaster 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Release | November 2016 | 6 November 2024 |
| Status | Complete, no new content | Actively updated (Update 10 and a Parades Pack by mid-2026) |
| Big additions | Mature Workshop library | Water parks and pools, improved pathing, heatmaps, asynchronous multiplayer |
| Hardware | Runs on modest PCs | Much heavier |

If you love building and want an enormous Workshop library at a low price, the original still holds up. If you want water parks and modern tools, the sequel is the active game.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Building a huge coaster first** and going bankrupt before it pays off. Start with cheap flat rides and shops.
- **Ignoring nausea.** High nausea means vomit, dirty paths, and unhappy guests.
- **Too few toilets and bins.**
- **No staff rooms,** leading to exhausted, slow staff.
- **Overcharging too early.** Build prestige with scenery first, then raise prices.
- **Messy paths.** Tiny path fragments and dead ends break guest navigation.
- **Leaving research running on everything.** Focus it.

## Advanced Tips

- **Price tuning:** raise prices one step at a time and watch guest thoughts; stop when "too expensive" complaints begin.
- **Scenery budget:** each coaster queue and station benefits from nearby scenery; a small investment raises ride prestige noticeably.
- **Shop tuning:** adjusting ingredients (salt, ice, sugar) changes both appeal and repeat purchases.
- **Maintenance zones:** assign mechanics to zones with the most rides; spread janitors along main paths.
- **Test with guests watching:** open a new coaster when you have a flat ride nearby to absorb the initial rush.
- **Framerate:** large parks with many custom buildings get slow. Use simpler scenery away from the main areas, and remove unused items.
