# Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy: Walkthrough & Tips

A spoiler-light guide to the whole collection: how investigations and trials work, what each of the 14 episodes asks of you, the missable achievements, and how to use the features added in the November 2025 update.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the Free Title Update of November 19, 2025 (Episode Selection, Story Mode, Auto-play, expanded Gallery). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **The collection is three complete games, 14 episodes.** Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (5 episodes), Justice for All (4) and Trials and Tribulations (5). Play them in order; every game builds on the one before, and the last case of Trials and Tribulations pays off threads from all three.
2. **Save constantly.** You can save from the menu during both investigation and trial segments, and there are multiple slots. Keep one slot per episode start and one "rolling" slot before every cross-examination.
3. **Losing isn't the end.** Run out of penalty meter and you get a Game Over, but you just reload. There's no permanent punishment, so experiment with a save as your safety net.
4. **Press everything.** In cross-examination, pressing statements is free. Only presenting the wrong evidence costs you. Press every line before you commit to a contradiction.
5. **Check the Court Record often.** Evidence descriptions change as the case goes on, and many items have a "Check" view with details you won't see otherwise (photos, autopsy reports, maps).
6. **Investigations advance through triggers, not a timer.** If you're stuck, you've usually missed one of: talking to everyone about every topic, presenting a specific item to someone, or examining a spot in a location you already visited.
7. **Use the new assist features if you only want the story.** Since the November 2025 update you can pick any episode from Episode Selection, toggle Story Mode to have cases solve themselves, and use Auto-play to advance dialogue hands-free.
8. **Talk about everything twice.** New conversation topics appear after you find evidence elsewhere. A person who "had nothing to say" earlier often does now.
9. **Episode 5 of the first game (Rise from the Ashes) is long.** It was added in the DS version and is roughly the length of two normal cases. Budget time for it.
10. **Fast-forward on replays.** Use the backlog and fast text advance (or Auto-play) to make retrying a cross-examination painless.

## How the Game Works

Every episode (after the very first) is split into alternating **Investigation** and **Trial** days.

### Investigation

| Action | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Examine | Click around a scene. The magnifying glass cursor highlights inspectable spots and marks ones you've already checked. |
| Move | Travel between locations you've unlocked. New locations open as the story advances. |
| Talk | Ask a character about listed topics. Topics you've already covered are marked. |
| Present | Show any evidence or profile from the Court Record to the current character. Most key breakthroughs come from this. |

Investigation ends automatically once you've found every required item and heard every required conversation. If the day won't end, work through this checklist: every location revisited, every topic exhausted, and every newly-acquired item presented to the person most likely to care about it.

### Trials

Trials are where you actually win or lose.

- **Testimony:** a witness gives a statement once straight through.
- **Cross-examination:** the same statements again, now interactive. You can **Press** ("Hold it!") any statement to ask for more detail, or **Present** evidence ("Objection!") on the statement it contradicts.
- **Pressing** often adds a brand-new statement to the testimony. Very often, the contradiction you need doesn't exist until you press something.
- **Wrong presents and wrong answers** drain your penalty meter. Empty it and the judge declares your client guilty (Game Over).
- **Choices and "point to the spot" prompts** also appear mid-trial. These cost meter when wrong, same as a bad present.

### Psyche-Locks (Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations)

From Justice for All onward, Phoenix carries the **Magatama**. When someone is hiding something, chains and locks appear over them. To break the locks:

1. Choose the Magatama option while talking to them.
2. Present evidence or profiles that prove their claims false, one lock at a time.
3. Wrong presents cost meter here too.
4. You can back out and come back later if you don't have the right evidence yet. Save before you start unlocking, since a wrong present drains the same meter you need in court.

A quick rule: if the game won't let you open the locks yet, you're missing a piece of evidence from later in the investigation. Leave and come back.

### Rise from the Ashes forensic tools

The fifth episode of the first game was written for the DS version and adds hands-on forensics: spraying luminol to reveal blood traces and dusting for fingerprints, plus examining evidence in 3D by rotating it. When a new item arrives, rotate it fully and zoom on anything that looks odd; that's usually where the case-breaking detail is.

## Episode Outline (spoiler-light)

### Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

| # | Episode | What to expect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | The First Turnabout | Tutorial trial with Mia Fey coaching you. No investigation. |
| 2 | Turnabout Sisters | First full investigation. Introduces Maya Fey and prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. |
| 3 | Turnabout Samurai | Film-studio case. Lots of characters to talk to and present evidence to. |
| 4 | Turnabout Goodbyes | Big-stakes case tied to Edgeworth's past. Several achievements live here. |
| 5 | Rise from the Ashes | Long, DS-era bonus case with forensic mini-games. |

### Justice for All

| # | Episode | What to expect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | The Lost Turnabout | Phoenix has amnesia; teaches Psyche-Locks. |
| 2 | Reunion, and Turnabout | Spirit-channeling mystery in a mountain village. |
| 3 | Turnabout Big Top | Circus case with a large, chatty cast. |
| 4 | Farewell, My Turnabout | The game's finale. Contains the Justice for All bad ending. |

### Trials and Tribulations

| # | Episode | What to expect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Turnabout Memories | Flashback trial; you play as a young Mia Fey. |
| 2 | The Stolen Turnabout | Gentleman-thief case. Lighter tone. |
| 3 | Recipe for Turnabout | Restaurant case with an unusual defendant situation. |
| 4 | Turnabout Beginnings | Another Mia flashback that sets up the finale. |
| 5 | Bridge to the Turnabout | Two-part finale that ties the whole trilogy together; includes a section with Miles Edgeworth. |

## Cross-Examination Technique

A reliable routine for any testimony:

1. **Read the full testimony once.** Note any statement that names a time, place, object or physical action. Those are the usual targets.
2. **Press every statement once.** Watch for new statements being added to the testimony (the text log helps).
3. **Open the Court Record and compare.** For each suspicious line, ask "which piece of evidence says otherwise?" Check photos and autopsy reports closely; timing and position details are a very common source of contradictions.
4. **Save before presenting.** If you're about 70 percent sure, save first. There's no reason to gamble the meter.
5. **If nothing contradicts, press harder.** In many testimonies the contradiction only shows up after pressing a specific line, which sometimes triggers a choice ("Should Phoenix push this further?"). Take the aggressive option most of the time.
6. **Think about profiles too.** The Court Record has a Profiles tab. Some contradictions are "that person couldn't have been there" and require presenting a character profile, not an object.

### Reading the game's logic

- **Contradictions are literal.** The game wants the item whose description explicitly conflicts with the statement, not something that "suggests" it.
- **"Point to the location" prompts** usually want the smallest, most specific detail on the image (a mark, a shadow, an object slightly out of place).
- **When asked "Who could have done this?"**, the answer is almost always the character profile the case has been quietly building toward, not the most suspicious-looking person.
- **Late-trial turnarounds** often reuse early evidence in a new way. Don't dismiss the first items you picked up.

## Achievements and Missables

There are 30 Steam achievements. The 14 episode clears, the full-trilogy clear and "First Steps" come naturally; the rest need specific actions. Because you can replay any episode from Episode Selection (added November 2025), nothing is permanently missable, but getting them on your first run saves replays.

| Achievement | What to do | Where |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Please Turn In Your Badge | Answer "Mia Fey" when asked who the defendant is | The First Turnabout |
| Mind Your Own Business, Pal! | Press Gumshoe about "they were even talking about marriage" | The Lost Turnabout (JFA Ep. 1) |
| Judge Wackner | Press Oldbag's claim that "it was the Nickel Samurai that I saw!" | Farewell, My Turnabout (JFA Ep. 4) |
| Smells Like Oldbag | Examine everything with even a whiff of Oldbag on it | Scenes featuring Oldbag |
| Um, Lotta Hair, Was It? | Reply with "Lotta Hair" when talking to Lotta | Reunion, and Turnabout (JFA Ep. 2) |
| Secret Weapons Three | Borrow all of Gumshoe's secret weapons | Turnabout Goodbyes |
| Naruhodo A. Wrighto | Present Max's profile to Maya | Turnabout Big Top |
| Justice Ill Served | Get the bad ending | Justice for All (finale) |
| Beware, Your Honor! | Press Dahlia's claim that "Feenie pushed him twice" | Turnabout Memories |
| Violetta's Home-Made Donuts | Get a donut offered to Phoenix by Viola | Recipe for Turnabout |
| Jean's Foreign Language Course | Learn all of Armstrong's fancy foreign words | Recipe for Turnabout |
| Lunchbox Specialist | Check out every lunchbox Angel Starr has to offer | Rise from the Ashes |
| I Hate Childhood Friends | As Edgeworth, hear all of his and Larry's childhood tales | Bridge to the Turnabout |
| Ladders Vs. Step-Ladders | Get every ladder vs. step-ladder conversation | Across the trilogy |
| A Lawyer Only Cries Once It's All Over | Clear all of the trilogy | Final episode |

Tips for the fiddly ones:

- **"Examine everything" and "every conversation" achievements** are why you should click every hotspot and exhaust every talk option. The magnifying glass marker tells you what you've already checked.
- **Justice Ill Served** requires deliberately making a wrong decision near the end of Farewell, My Turnabout. Save right before the final decision so you can see the bad ending and then reload for the good one.
- **Pressing achievements** only trigger on the named statement. If you're playing for completion, simply press every statement in every testimony and you'll get them naturally.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Presenting on a hunch without saving.** The penalty meter is the only real resource in the game. Save, then gamble.
- **Skipping "useless" examine text.** Flavour text feeds several achievements and occasionally hints at the next step.
- **Ignoring the Profiles tab.** Many players get stuck because the answer is a person, not an object.
- **Assuming the investigation is broken.** It almost never is. Revisit every location and present new evidence to everyone.
- **Starting Justice for All or Trials and Tribulations first.** The later games spoil earlier twists and assume you know the recurring cast.
- **Rushing Rise from the Ashes.** It introduces new mechanics halfway through; slow down and rotate evidence fully.
- **Turning on Story Mode by accident and wondering why nothing is interactive.** It's a toggle; switch it off to play the trials yourself.

## Advanced Tips

- **Use Story Mode and Auto-play surgically.** Stuck on one testimony for half an hour? Toggle Story Mode for that section, watch the answer, then switch it off again. You can swap between Story Mode and Auto-play to suit the moment.
- **Keep a "decision" save before every late-trial choice.** Finales in all three games have branching prompts where a wrong answer costs a lot of meter at once.
- **Reread testimony through the backlog.** When a new statement is added after a press, the log is the quickest way to reread exact wording.
- **Look at the time.** A huge number of contradictions across all three games are about timestamps (clocks, receipts, weather, broadcasts). Note every time mentioned in a case.
- **For a no-help run,** avoid guides for the first playthrough of each episode; the series is designed so every answer is deducible from the Court Record.
- **After finishing,** check the Gallery. The November 2025 update added a Music Player (including tracks from a special arrangement album), an Art viewer with official illustrations and event scenes, and a Scene Creator where you can pose character models and animations.

## FAQ

**How long is the trilogy?**
It depends heavily on reading speed. Each game is a substantial visual novel on its own, and Rise from the Ashes and the two finales are the longest cases. Expect dozens of hours for all three.

**Can I play the games in a different order?**
Yes, Episode Selection lets you jump to any episode, but the story is strongly serialized. Play in release order on a first run.

**Is there a way to skip hard trials?**
Yes. Story Mode (added November 19, 2025) solves cases automatically so you can follow the story. It can be toggled on and off.

**What languages are supported?**
The November 2025 update added Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, including text and voice, on top of the existing languages. Check the store page for the full list.

**Does Steam Cloud / controller work?**
The game supports gamepads and mouse/keyboard. If a controller misbehaves, try toggling Steam Input for the game in its Steam properties.

**What should I play after the trilogy?**
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy continues the main story (released January 2024). The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a standalone prequel series, and Ace Attorney Investigations Collection (September 2024) stars Miles Edgeworth.

**Is the trilogy still popular?**
Very. Capcom announced on September 20, 2026 that the collection has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

**Is the Turnabout Collection bundle still sold?**
No. The Ace Attorney Turnabout Collection bundle was discontinued on May 31, 2024. Both games remain available separately, and owners of the bundle can still play.
