Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis: Beginner-to-Endgame Guide

A guide to SEGA's free-to-play action MMO: classes and subclasses, the main systems (Battle Power, augments, enhancement), how to level, what to spend Star Gems and N-Meseta on, and what's current in ver.2.

Researched September 2026 — current as of PSO2 NEW GENESIS ver.2 (post-September 15–16, 2026 maintenance; Main Story Chapter 9 "Tower of Shadows" is live). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Follow the Main Story and the Recommended Quests. Main story gives class levels, gear and unlocks. In August 2026 the Quest Counter swapped "Limited-Time Quests" for Recommended Quests, which is now the easiest "what do I do next" list.
  2. Your class levels are separate. Each class levels independently on the same character. You can change class freely in the lobby.
  3. Pick a subclass. Most classes use a subclass for extra skills and stats. The Waker and Slayer classes are designed differently and don't work the same way as the original eight. Check the class screen before planning.
  4. Battle Power (BP) is your gate. Quests and areas have recommended BP. BP rises with class level, weapon and armor enhancement, augments, and skill points.
  5. Do your tasks. Daily, weekly and region tasks give EXP, N-Meseta and items. Tasks are the backbone of steady progress.
  6. Use Photon Dash and Glide. They make travel across the open fields fast. Unlock and upgrade them early.
  7. Join Urgent Quests. Scheduled Urgent Quests give great rewards. Check the in-game schedule.
  8. Star Gems (SG) are free premium currency. You earn them from tasks, campaigns and compensation. Don't waste them on scratch tickets before you've covered basics like storage.
  9. Personal Shop selling needs Premium. Without Premium you can buy from other players but can't list items. You also need to finish the main story task "Aina's Resolve" before the Personal Shop opens.
  10. Maintenance is on Tuesdays (PDT). Upcoming windows: 9/29 7:00 PM to 9/30 1:00 AM PDT, and a longer one on 10/6 8:00 AM to 10/7 1:00 AM PDT.

Classes

Class Weapons (main examples) Role

Fighter Twin Daggers, Double Saber, Knuckles Fast, high-damage melee
Ranger Assault Rifle, Launcher Ranged with weak-point debuffs
Gunner Twin Machine Guns Mobile ranged with chain combos
Force Rod, Talis Techniques (magic), elemental
Techter Wand, Talis Support buffs and melee-tech hybrid
Braver Katana, Bow Precise counters and charged bow shots
Bouncer Jet Boots, Dual Blades Aerial combos and elemental jet boots
Waker Harmonizer (a Technique weapon usable at close and long range) Summons (a spiritual successor to PSO2's Summoner)
Slayer Gunblade Aggressive hybrid gun and blade

Beginner picks:

Subclass choice: pick one whose skills boost your main (for example, Hunter/Fighter or Ranger/Gunner). Check each class's skill tree to see which skills work when used as a subclass.

Core Systems

Battle Power (BP): Your overall power score. It rises from:

Augments and Augment Transfer:

Photon Points (PP): The resource for skills and Photon Arts. Manage PP carefully in long fights.

Mag: A floating companion. Its Active Sonar points out undiscovered Cocoons, Towers, Ryuker Devices and Region Mags, and can be set to find materials like fruit, minerals and some item containers. Mag Forms (appearances) come from Mission Passes, events and scratches. SEGA ran a Mag AI: M.A.I. feature test in mid-2026 that lets you chat with your Mag.

Gathering and cooking: Gather food and materials in the fields to make meals that give buffs.

Regions and Leveling

The main regions include Aelio, Retem, Kvaris and Stia, each with its own cities, camps, enemies and Cocoons/Towers (combat and platforming trials that give rewards). Newer ver.2 areas and story chapters follow on from these.

Leveling route (general):

  1. Main story in order. It gives large EXP and unlocks new areas.
  2. Tasks in each region (Daily, Weekly and Region tasks).
  3. Recommended Quests at the Quest Counter.
  4. Urgent Quests and Emergency Trials for fast EXP and gear.
  5. Battledia and Trigger Quests at higher levels.

Tip: EXP boosts (from campaigns and login bonuses) stack well with Urgent Quests.

Endgame

Content What it gives
Urgent Quests Big rewards on a schedule
Battledia Quests Harder combat challenges
Trigger Quests Solo or group challenge quests started with a trigger item
Trinitas Quests High-difficulty group content
World Trials Open-field group objectives (e.g. World Trial: Stellar Grace Recovery Operation)
Realm Investigation Area exploration quests (the Ruins version supports Auto-Join Party since August 2026)

Recent adjustments (August 2026):

Currencies

Currency Source Spend on
N-Meseta Quests, selling items, tasks Enhancement, augments, crafting, NPC shops
Star Gems (SG) Tasks, campaigns, Mission Pass, compensation Scratch tickets, storage, some premium items
Arks Cash (AC) Real money Premium Set, AC Scratch, storage

What to spend SG on first:

  1. Extra storage if you're running out.
  2. A Premium Set occasionally (if your SG allows) for the Personal Shop, more storage and other benefits.
  3. Cosmetics only after that.

Mission Pass: a season pass with a free and a premium track. It gives cosmetics and materials.

Premium Set

Premium adds a lot of quality of life:

Many players buy Premium with SG from time to time rather than with real money.
