A practical guide to PAYDAY 3 for new and returning heisters: stealth and loud fundamentals, the current progression and unlock systems (Renown, Crimebonds, Infamy), loadout building, heist tips, and what changed in the 2026 Anniversary Update.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 3.9.1 (Anniversary Update, 24 September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
| Update | Date | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 3.9 Anniversary Update | 22 Sep 2026 | All heists are now part of the base game. Revamped Campaign and improved Tutorial. First Crimebond released (Brute Force). |
| Brute Force Crimebond | 22 Sep 2026 | Adds the OVE9050 saw, which cuts lockpickable doors, deposit boxes, and cops. Non-owners can "Steal" some items with Renown; Renown is refunded if you later buy the Crimebond. |
| 3.9.1 Hotfix | 24 Sep 2026 | Saw perks from the OVERKILL vendor no longer require the DLC; fix for players at max Renown (1600); fixes for saw-opened safes and several crashes. |
| 3.8 | 25 Aug 2026 | Game moved to Unreal Engine 5; install size dropped from roughly 65 GB to about 45 GB. Cook Off rework removed bag limits. Paid heist DLCs were delisted from stores. |
| 3.8.1 | 27 Aug 2026 | Fixed smoke not blocking AI vision and AI stealth vision detecting players at higher elevations. Fixed DualSense on PC without Steam Input. |
Earlier milestones still shape how the game plays: Skills 2.0 (Update 2.5, December 2025) replaced the launch-era Edge/Grit/Rush buff system, Armor 2.0 arrived alongside the Party Powder heist (Update 2.1.2, May 2025), a peer-to-peer networking update went live in March 2026, and Starbreeze stated that an offline mode was not feasible, so the game remains online-only (you can still play solo with bots in a private lobby).
| Phase | What happens | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Casing (unmasked) | You can walk into public areas freely. Guards will escort or warn you out of restricted zones. | Mark cameras and guards, find keycards, spot the vault or target. |
| Stealth (masked) | You can carry bags, pick locks, subdue and tie civilians, answer pagers. | Hide bodies, tie up civilians, and avoid camera cones. Keep hostages out of patrol paths. |
| Search / alarm | Security is alerted. Some heists have a search state before the full alarm. | Finish objectives fast; a search is not always a loss. |
| Loud (assault) | Police waves arrive, with specials escalating over time. | Hold defensible spots, keep hostages for trades, secure loot between waves. |
Pagers: When you kill or subdue a guard, their pager may go off. Answer it quickly. There is a limit to how many pagers a heist tolerates before the alarm triggers, so non-lethal subdues and careful routing are better than killing everyone.
Civilians and hostages: Tie civilians down so they cannot call the police. In loud, hostages can be traded to bring back downed teammates who went into custody, and they slow police assaults.
| Enemy | Threat | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Shield | Blocks frontal fire | Flank, use explosives, or shoot exposed legs and sides |
| Dozer | Heavy armor, massive damage | Focus faceplate then head; burst weapons and grenades help |
| Cloaker | Charges and downs you instantly | Listen for the audio cue, stay near teammates, don't wander alone |
| Zapper | Tasers stun you in place | Break line of sight or kill fast; teammates can free you |
| Sniper | High damage at range | Use cover and prioritise them from safe angles |
| Techie | Deploys tech that interferes with you and your HUD | Destroy their deployables and kill the Techie quickly |
| Grenadier | Area denial with gas/explosives | Move out of the cloud; don't camp one corner |
Skills 2.0 replaced the launch system (where skills revolved around Edge, Grit, and Rush buffs) with skill trees. You gain skill points as your Infamy level rises and assign them across trees that cover stealth tools, weapon handling, armor and survivability, and team support. Practical advice:
| Deployable | Best use |
|---|---|
| Ammo Bag | Mandatory for long loud heists |
| Armor Bag | Refills armor chunks; strongest on high difficulty |
| Medic Bag | Heals and helps with downs |
| Sentry Gun | Holds a flank or covers a bag route while you work |
Throwables such as frag grenades and flashbangs handle groups and Dozers. Smoke grenades block AI line of sight; a 3.8.1 fix made smoke protection work as intended again.
All heists below are playable in the base game as of Update 3.9. Names are as they appear in game.
| Heist | Style | Key tip |
|---|---|---|
| No Rest for the Wicked | Bank job, stealth or loud | Classic starter. Case the lobby, find the manager's keycard, and learn the vault route. |
| Road Rage | Loud only | Armored transport ambush. Keep the crew together and move loot to the van in pairs. |
| Dirty Ice | Jewelry store | Fast stealth possible if you control the staff; loud is a sprint to the escape. |
| Rock the Cradle | Nightclub | Stealth needs good civilian control; loud has tight corridors for Shields. |
| Under the Surphaze | Art gallery robbery | Paintings are light loot; identify the right pieces and use the escape routes. |
| Gold & Sharke | Office/penthouse vault | Long stealth heist; learn camera positions. |
| 99 Boxes | Shipping yard | Scan containers to find the right cargo; lots of open ground. |
| Touch the Sky | Penthouse | Vertical heist; plan the rooftop route. |
| Cook Off | Meth lab | Reworked in 3.8: no bag limit, so keep cooking for as long as you can hold. Assign one cook and one bagger. |
| Syntax Error | Tech-focused | Stealth hacking objectives; protect the hack in loud. |
| Boys in Blue | Police facility | Evidence room objectives; AI pathing near the back gate was fixed in 3.8.1. |
| Houston Breakout | Rescue job | Loud-heavy; hold chokepoints and keep the crew together. |
| Fear & Greed | Post-launch, high security | Multi-level map; learn the roof and interior routes before going loud. |
| Turbid Station | Post-launch | The basement is a key area; AI getting stuck there was fixed in 3.8.1. |
| Diamond District, First World Bank | Free heists added in 2024 | Both reward learning camera and guard routes before going loud. |
| Party Powder (May 2025), Delivery Charge (Sep 2025), Shopping Spree (Jan 2026) | Post-launch heists | Play each once on Normal to learn objectives before raising difficulty. |
Preplanning favors: Many heists let you buy favors (extra equipment, alternative entry points) before starting. A 3.8 fix stopped favors from being consumed on each restart, so they are more worthwhile now.
| Difficulty | Who it's for | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | First runs, learning layouts | Fewer and weaker enemies; forgiving stealth |
| Hard | Comfortable players | More specials, tighter detection |
| Very Hard | Organised crews | Elite units common; resource management matters |
| Overkill | Coordinated teams | Punishing waves and stealth; best payouts |
Are all PAYDAY 3 heists free now? Yes. Paid heist DLCs were delisted in August 2026, and Update 3.9 (22 September 2026) made every heist, past and future, part of the base game.
What is a Crimebond? A themed content package introduced in Update 3.9. The first is Brute Force, built around the OVE9050 saw. Non-owners can steal some items with Renown and get that Renown back if they buy it later.
Can I play PAYDAY 3 offline? No. Starbreeze said offline mode was not feasible and focused on improving online play instead. You can host a private lobby and play with AI crew.
What is the Renown cap? 1600. Update 3.9.1 fixed a bug where players at max Renown could not gain more after stealing Brute Force items.
Does PAYDAY 3 run on Unreal Engine 5? Yes, since Update 3.8 (25 August 2026). The install shrank to about 45 GB.
What difficulty should a new player use? Normal for learning maps, then Hard. Very Hard and Overkill are meant for organised crews.
My PS5 controller doesn't work on PC. Update 3.8.1 fixed native DualSense support; if you had forced Steam Input on as a workaround, you can turn it off again.
