What's New (as of September 2026)

Quick Start

  1. Aim for the head. Zombies only go down for good with head damage. There is no crosshair, so aim down the sights.
  2. Ammo is scarce. Use melee on single zombies and save bullets for runners and emergencies.
  3. Stick with your team. Voice and text chat only reach players nearby. Walkie-talkies let you talk across the map.
  4. Watch for infection. A bite or grab can infect you. Pills (Phalanx) slow the infection down and gene therapy cures it.
  5. Manage your stamina. Sprinting and swinging drain it. Getting caught out of breath in a crowd is how most players die.
  6. Keep an eye on weight. Carrying too much slows you down. Share the heavy stuff.
  7. Shove to make space. A shove pushes zombies back so you can reposition or finish them.
  8. Learn the objectives. Objective maps have randomized tasks and routes, so read the objective text every time.
  9. Offline practice is easy now. Set max players to 1 when you create a server.

Game Modes

Mode Goal Key tips
Objective Complete the map's objective chain and reach extraction Objectives, items and routes are randomized. Stay together and share keys and tools
Survival Defend your area's safe zones against waves until rescue arrives Supply drops come in between waves. If all safe zones lose their health, the rescue fails

In Survival, respawns depend on the mode's rules: at the start of a wave, or instantly based on points. On Objective maps, you can often respawn at checkpoints on easier difficulties.

Zombies

Type Behavior How to handle it
Shamblers Slow walkers, dangerous in groups Melee headshots. Keep moving, never let them surround you
Runners Fast and aggressive Shoot them when they come around corners. Back into a corridor
Kid zombies Small targets Easy to miss, so aim lower and take your time

The game uses crowds and noise. Gunshots draw zombies, so a single shot can pull in more than it kills.

Infection

Weapons and Items

Firearms

The store page lists 30+ weapons across melee and firearms. Wikipedia counts up to 18 firearms, from the small .22 Target Pistol up through shotguns and rifles. Ammo is split into separate types, so check what your gun uses before you pick up ammo.

Category Use
Handguns Light and quick. Good backup
Shotguns Crowd clearing up close. Heavy ammo
Rifles Precise headshots at range. Scarce ammo
Specialty (bow, flare gun, explosives) Situational. Save them for big moments

Melee

The developers made melee a real option:

Tools and medical items

Item Use
Bandages Stop bleeding
First aid kit Heals a large amount
Phalanx pills Slows infection
Gene therapy Cures infection and gives immunity
Walkie-talkie Talk to teammates across the map
Flashlight or light sources Essential in dark maps
Barricade hammer and boards Board up doors and windows (useful in Survival)
Grenades and TNT Crowd clearing. Watch out for teammates

Teamwork

Your First Objective Round, Step by Step

  1. Spawn and check your hands. You often start with little or nothing. Your fists or flashlight will not last, so the first job is finding a melee weapon.
  2. Loot the first building together. Split rooms between players, but stay within shouting distance, because proximity voice fades quickly.
  3. Read the objective text in the HUD or objective menu. It tells you what to find, such as a key, a fuse or a person, and those locations can change between rounds.
  4. Spread the guns out. Give firearms to the players with the best aim and keep melee users up front to handle single zombies quietly.
  5. Move as a group between objectives. Clear corners, check behind you, and do not sprint ahead of the team.
  6. Before extraction, top up health, share the last ammo and make sure nobody is secretly infected.
  7. At extraction, hold a defensible spot until the rescue arrives. Players who wander off at the end are the classic last-minute death.
