# Neverwinter: Beginner-to-Endgame Guide

A 2026 guide to Neverwinter, Cryptic's free-to-play Dungeons & Dragons action MMO: picking a class and paragon path, leveling to 20, item level and ratings, the endgame loop, currencies and what to spend them on, and the current Module 33 / 33.5 content.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of Module 33.5: Monoliths of Madness (live September 1, 2026) and the Of Minds and Madness Battle Pass (Phase 1 ends October 8, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Current State (September 2026)

- **Module 33: Biting Cold** (May 19, 2026) added the **Reghed Edge** adventure zone (a frozen, Icewind Dale-flavored area) with the **Encroaching Frost** zone mechanic, the **Jotunskar** dungeon, and new Celestial gear pieces (shirts, pants and rings). The preview had targeted "around the end of May"; the module actually launched May 19.
- **Module 33.5: Monoliths of Madness** (September 1, 2026) is a 12-week event. Each week one returning zone — **Menzoberranzan, Northdark Reaches, Narbondellyn or Dragonbone Vale** — becomes the focus for new quests where you destroy Madness Altars. You're **downscaled** in the active zone. The module also raised some stack sizes from 99 to 999 and added an extra slot for **Offense and Defense Combat Enchantments**.
- **Of Minds and Madness Battle Pass** runs from September 1; Phase 1 ends October 8, 2026 at 7:30 AM PT. Its headline reward is the **Laughing Void** artifact.
- **Wild Adventures Lockbox** runs September 1 to November 17, 2026 (Star Angler mount, Encore the Virtuoso companion).

The game is on PC (Steam and Arc) plus PS4 and Xbox One. The max level is **20** (it was reduced from 80 in the 2021 Jewel of the North module to match tabletop D&D).

## Quick Start

1. **Pick a class you'll enjoy, then learn both paragon paths.** You can switch paths later; your class is fixed.
2. **Follow the main story to 20.** Leveling is quick. Don't worry about gear until you hit the cap.
3. **Pray (Invoke) every day.** Invoking gives small daily rewards and a short buff. Default key is Ctrl + I.
4. **Refine Rough Astral Diamonds daily.** Rough AD from dungeons and events becomes tradable Astral Diamonds, the game's main currency, up to a daily cap.
5. **Item level gates content.** Every queue and dungeon has a minimum item level. Raise it by upgrading gear, enchantments, companions, mounts and artifacts.
6. **Use the Random Queue daily** for bonus Rough AD and seals.
7. **Get a companion and mount early** — both give combat bonuses, not just cosmetics.
8. **Join an active guild.** Guild boons (stat bonuses) are a large chunk of power, and guilds make dungeons much easier.
9. **Don't spend Zen or AD on lockbox keys** unless you understand the drop rates. Upgrade your core gear first.

## Classes and Paragon Paths

Each class has two paragon paths, which set your role.

| Class | Paragon Path 1 | Paragon Path 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Barbarian | Blademaster (DPS) | Sentinel (Tank) |
| Bard | Songblade (DPS) | Minstrel (Healer) |
| Cleric | Arbiter (DPS) | Devout (Healer) |
| Fighter | Dreadnought (DPS) | Vanguard (Tank) |
| Paladin | Oathkeeper (Healer) | Justicar (Tank) |
| Ranger | Hunter (DPS) | Warden (DPS) |
| Rogue | Assassin (DPS) | Whisperer (DPS) |
| Warlock | Hellbringer (DPS) | Soulweaver (Healer) |
| Wizard | Arcanist (DPS) | Thaumaturge (DPS) |

**Role tips:**
- **DPS** queue times are the longest. Fine for solo leveling, slow for random dungeons.
- **Tanks and healers** get into queues fast and are always in demand for endgame content.
- **Paladin, Bard, Cleric and Warlock** can heal; **Fighter, Barbarian and Paladin** can tank. Hybrid classes can swap role between paths.

### Beginner-Friendly Picks

- **Warlock** — strong ranged DPS, can switch to a healer path.
- **Paladin** — sturdy, and both of its paths are support roles.
- **Ranger** — good ranged/melee flexibility for questing.
- **Barbarian** — simple, heavy-hitting melee.

## Combat Basics

Neverwinter is action combat: you aim with the camera and dodge manually.

| Slot | What it is |
|---|---|
| At-Wills (LMB / RMB) | Unlimited basic attacks |
| Encounter powers (Q, E, R) | Cooldown abilities |
| Daily powers (1, 2) | Big abilities fed by Action Points |
| Class Mechanic (Tab) | Class-specific power, e.g. a stance or resource |
| Dodge / Block (Shift) | Depends on class — dodge, sprint, or shield block |

**Feats** and **Class Features** add passives as you level. Your **Paragon Path** choice changes both your powers and your role.

## Stats and Item Level

Your character sheet shows ratings instead of flat percentages. The main ones:

- **Power** — damage and healing.
- **Critical Strike and Critical Severity** — crit chance and crit damage.
- **Accuracy and Combat Advantage** — offensive ratings.
- **Defense, Awareness, Critical Avoidance, Deflect** — defensive ratings.
- **Forte** — a class-specific stat that boosts your class's priority stats.
- **Incoming and Outgoing Healing**, **Stamina/Recovery**.

Ratings convert into percentages capped by your item level and the content you're in, so there's a ceiling beyond which extra rating does nothing. Content-specific caps are shown in the character sheet. **Combined Rating** on items feeds overall power.

**Item level** comes from everything you equip: gear, enchantments, runestones, companions and their gear, mounts and insignias, and artifacts.

## Leveling to 20

1. Finish the tutorial and main questline starting in **Protector's Enclave**.
2. Follow the storyline zones; side quests aren't necessary at this stage.
3. Pick up your first companion and mount (the story and early rewards help).
4. At level 20, begin the **campaigns** — each module adds a campaign with its own progression and rewards.

Neverwinter has periodically run a **Quick Start** program (most recently April 21 - May 26, 2026, around the Module 33 launch) that gave returning players a free pre-equipped level 20 character. Watch for it if you're returning.

## The Endgame Loop

| Activity | Rewards |
|---|---|
| Random Queue (daily) | Rough AD, seals, experience |
| Campaigns (Reghed Edge in M33, plus older modules) | Campaign currency, boons, gear |
| Hunts | Pelts and marks toward trophies |
| Heroic Encounters | Zone currency, drops |
| Dungeons and Trials (Normal / Master) | Best-in-slot gear |
| Monoliths of Madness weekly quests (M33.5, until late November) | Event currency and rewards |
| Seasonal events | Event currency for exclusive items |
| Battle Pass | Artifacts, companions, mounts |

**New dungeon: Jotunskar (M33).** A multi-boss dungeon added with Biting Cold. Check its item-level requirement in the queue window before joining.

### Build Your Power in This Order

1. **Gear** from the current campaign and dungeon (Reghed Edge and Jotunskar in M33, plus the Celestial pieces).
2. **Enchantments and runestones** — upgrade with Refinement Points; the Refinement system eats a lot of resources, so pick priority slots.
3. **Mount equip power and mount insignias** — insignia bonuses can be huge.
4. **Companion** — its gear and enhancements affect you.
5. **Artifacts** — they add ratings and an active power; the Battle Pass artifact (Laughing Void) is earnable through this season's Battle Pass.
6. **Guild boons** — from your guild's stronghold.

## Currencies

| Currency | Source | Spend on |
|---|---|---|
| Astral Diamonds (AD) | Refined Rough AD, Auction House sales | Auction House, Zen exchange, upgrades |
| Rough Astral Diamonds | Dungeons, invokes, events | Refine into AD (daily cap) |
| Zen | Real money, or bought with AD on the Zen exchange | Zen Market: lockbox keys, account items |
| Gold | Questing | Minor vendors and consumables |
| Refinement Points | Salvaging enchantments and items | Upgrading enchantments, artifacts, mounts |
| Event currencies | Seasonal events | Event stores |

### Free-to-Play Tips

- **Buy Zen with AD**, not money, for bag space and account-wide unlocks.
- **Sell drops you don't need** on the Auction House.
- **Don't open lockboxes** you can't afford keys for; sell them instead.
- **Skip the premium Battle Pass track** unless the rewards fit your build.

## Seasonal Events in 2026

Neverwinter runs a yearly calendar. Recent ones:

- **Protector's Jubilee** (June 19-26, 2026) — the anniversary event.
- **Celebration of Lliira** (July 3-10, 2026) — fireworks and Tokens of Lliira's Favor.
- **Summer Festival** (August 13 - September 3, 2026) — Sahha Ball, the Summer Feast Contest, Troll Fight Contest.

Event currencies usually disappear or become worthless after the event. Spend them before it ends.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Chasing gear before level 20.** It will all be replaced.
- **Stacking one stat past the cap.** Check the percentage in your character sheet, not just the rating.
- **Skipping daily invoking and the random queue.** Those daily rewards add up.
- **Wasting Refinement on low-priority enchantments.** Focus on your main slots first.
- **Soloing in a dead guild.** Guild boons are a big part of your power; join an active guild.
- **Ignoring companion and mount powers.** They're a large part of your combat stats.

## Advanced Tips

- **Pick a hybrid-role class** if you want fast queues. Tanks and healers queue fastest.
- **Plan your artifacts.** Many artifacts have set bonuses (for example, the Laughing Void works with the Voidbound Necklace and Belt).
- **Use the Offense and Defense Combat Enchantment slots** added in M33.5; the new Buried Treasure-era enchantments have unique effects.
- **Save event currencies** to buy the items that directly increase item level.
- **Log in during events** for account-wide unlocks and cosmetics.
