Need for Speed Most Wanted (2012): Complete Guide

A guide to Criterion's 2012 open-world Most Wanted (the Steam version, app 1262560, not the 2005 original): Speed Points, beating the Most Wanted list, car hunting, mods, cop evasion, collectibles and multiplayer.

Researched September 2026. Current as of the Steam release (June 2020), which is the same game as the 2012 original. We found no posted EA retirement notice for its online features, but EA can retire them with 30 days' notice on its service-updates page. Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. This is the 2012 Criterion game. It's set in the city of Fairhaven, with Burnout-style driving. It's not the 2005 Rockport game.
  2. Speed Points (SP) are everything. Every race, takedown, cop escape, jump, billboard and speed camera earns SP. SP moves you up the Most Wanted list.
  3. Almost every car is available from the start, hidden around the city. Drive up to a Jack Spot to unlock the car parked there.
  4. Each car has its own events and mods. Win a car's events to unlock its mods. Mods don't transfer between cars.
  5. Use EasyDrive. It's the in-car menu that lets you start events, switch cars, change mods and set a route without stopping.
  6. Challenge the Most Wanted list. There are 10 racers. Beat one in a race, then take them down during their escape to win their car. The #1 car is the Koenigsegg Agera R.
  7. Breaking line of sight loses the cops. Get out of sight and stay hidden to cool down.
  8. Repair shops fix damage and respray your car. Drive through one when you're out of the cops' sight.
  9. Smash billboards and speed cameras, and crash through security gates. They're the collectibles, and all of them feed SP and Autolog.

How Progression Works

Element What it does
Speed Points (SP) Your XP; they unlock Most Wanted challenges
Most Wanted list 10 racers, each unlocked by reaching an SP threshold
Jack Spots Hidden car locations; driving up unlocks the car
Car events Races, Speed Runs and Ambushes tied to each car
Mods Unlocked per car by winning its events and completing mod challenges
Autolog Tracks your times and speeds against friends

The loop: find cars, then run their events, which earns SP and mods. When a Most Wanted racer unlocks, challenge them, win the race, then chase down and take out their car to add it to your collection.

Event Types

Event Goal Tips
Sprint Point-to-point race Learn shortcuts; use EasyDrive routing
Circuit 2 to 3 laps Protect your lead and save nitrous for straights
Speed Run High average speed Avoid traffic and crashes; any slowdown kills the average
Ambush Start surrounded by cops; escape fast Break line of sight immediately and head for alleys

Mods (Per Car)

Wikipedia lists the upgrade areas as tires, transmission, engine, nitrous and body work, and there's a chassis/handling slot too. Each slot offers a few choices with trade-offs. The in-game names vary slightly, so read the descriptions:

Category Typical choices When to use
Tires Reinflating tires, or off-road-focused tires Reinflating tires beat spike strips in cop-heavy events
Body Tougher bodywork, or lighter bodywork Tough for takedowns and cop chases; light for racing
Chassis Race-tuned, or off-road-tuned handling Off-road for dirt shortcuts and rough cars
Nitrous Longer-lasting, or more powerful Long for Speed Runs; powerful for sprints
Transmission Short ratio (acceleration) or long ratio (top speed) Short for technical courses; long for highways

Pro mods: completing mod-specific challenges upgrades a mod to a stronger "Pro" version. It's worth doing on the cars you use most.

Practical loadout for cop events: reinflating tires, tough bodywork, powerful nitrous.

Cops and Heat

Beating the Most Wanted List

  1. Pick the right car. Use a car with similar or better performance, and mod it for racing (light body, powerful nitrous, the right transmission).
  2. Learn the route first. Drive the course in free roam if a race keeps beating you.
  3. Win the race, then take them down. After you win, the racer flees and you have to wreck their car. Hit them into walls or oncoming traffic from the side.
  4. Save takedown power: tougher bodywork helps in the post-race chase.
  5. Work down to #1. The top racer drives the Koenigsegg Agera R, the game's headline hypercar.

Collectibles

Collectible What to do
Jack Spots Drive up to them to unlock cars
Billboards Hit a jump and smash through the billboard
Speed Cameras Pass through at the highest speed you can (Autolog compares with friends)
Security Gates Crash through them to open shortcuts

Your map shows discovered items. Many billboards need a specific approach angle and speed, so try a lighter car with a long-ratio gearbox if a jump falls short.

Multiplayer

DLC

The Steam version lists these add-ons:

DLC Content
Complete DLC Bundle The four content packs below: 20 cars in total, each pack with an elite car you unlock through Most Wanted-style races
Ultimate Speed Pack Five high-speed exotics
Terminal Velocity Pack Five cars plus a large airport expansion with new single-player content and multiplayer modes
Movie Legends Five movie-inspired classic cars
NFS Heroes Five cars from earlier Need for Speed games
Premium Timesavers Pack Unlocks nearly every car and gives Pro Mods for every car, in single player and multiplayer
Premium Modification Unlock Pro Mods for every car, in single player and multiplayer
Multiplayer Booster Pack Early access to upgraded, satin-black versions of the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale, Porsche 911 Carrera S, Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, Caterham Superlight R500 and Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

Should you buy the unlock packs? Only if you want to skip the game. Hunting Jack Spots and earning mods is most of the single-player content; the Timesavers pack removes it.

PC Setup

Fairhaven at a Glance

Wikipedia describes Fairhaven as a new city with a beach and an industrial district, tied together by the main I-92 highway. Rules of thumb by terrain type:

Terrain Good for Watch out for
I-92 and long straights Speed Runs, speed cameras, nitrous from dangerous driving Heavy traffic at high speed; one clip wrecks a Speed Run average
Industrial areas, alleys and yards Losing cops, shortcuts, billboard ramps Tight gaps that punish wide cars
Dense streets Takedowns into walls and traffic Roadblocks at high heat
Dirt and off-road cuts Off-road-modded cars and escape routes Low-slung supercars struggle off tarmac

FAQ

Is this the 2005 Most Wanted? No. This is the 2012 Criterion game set in Fairhaven. The 2005 game (set in Rockport) isn't on Steam.

How do I unlock cars? Find their Jack Spots around Fairhaven. Most Wanted cars are won by beating and taking down each racer.

What is the #1 Most Wanted car? The Koenigsegg Agera R.

How do I lose the cops? Break line of sight and stay hidden until the cooldown finishes. Repair shops help once you're out of sight.

Do I need an EA account? Yes. The Steam version requires linking your EA and Steam accounts.

Which DLC is worth it? If you want more to do, the Complete DLC Bundle (Ultimate Speed, Terminal Velocity, Movie Legends and NFS Heroes, 20 cars total). Terminal Velocity is the one that adds a new area, the airport. Skip the Timesavers and Mod Unlock packs unless you just want everything unlocked.

Can I play with a keyboard? Yes, but a controller is much better for throttle and steering control in drifts and takedowns.

What are the minimum PC specs? Very low: a 2 GHz dual core, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 10.1 GPU with 512 MB and 20 GB of storage, per the Steam page.

Is online still up? We found no EA retirement notice for it as of September 2026, but player counts are low. Check EA's service-updates page for changes.
