Need for Speed Heat: Complete Guide

A guide to Palm City: how the day/night loop works, how to earn Bank and REP fast, car builds and tuning, surviving high Heat police chases, and the story against Lt. Frank Mercer.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final game version (Heat's last content updates were in 2020; crossplay was added in June 2020). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status in 2026

NFS Heat is complete. Ghost Games' last updates added crossplay (June 2020), and EA's newer racing content has gone to NFS Unbound. Heat still works fine: the single-player story is playable without an online connection, and online free roam still depends on EA's servers.

Quick Start

  1. Day earns money, night earns REP. Day races in the Speedhunter Showdown pay Bank (cash). Night street races give REP (reputation), which unlocks better parts, cars and story missions.
  2. Get home to bank the REP multiplier. Reach a safehouse at night and the REP you earned is multiplied by your Heat level. Get busted and you keep only the base REP, pay a Bank fine, and your night session ends.
  3. Upgrade your car before buying a new one. Parts from Performance shops push a starter car a long way. Only switch cars when you're stuck.
  4. Build for the event type. Race, Drift, Road and Off-road builds need different parts. One car doesn't do everything.
  5. Heat 1–5 changes the cops. Higher Heat means more aggressive cops, faster cars, roadblocks and spike strips. Only stay out at high Heat if your car can escape.
  6. Collectibles pay out. Billboards, Speed Traps, Drift Zones, Jumps, Street Art and Flamingos all reward Bank or REP.
  7. Use nitrous smartly. Refill it by drifting, drafting and near misses. Don't waste it in turns.
  8. Buy the right engine swap. Engine swaps (unlocked with REP) can change a car's performance rating dramatically.
  9. Night gets you story progress. Main story missions often need a certain REP level.
  10. Customization is deep. Handling can be retuned per car at any time, and visual parts unlock through REP and challenges.

The Day/Night Loop

Time Main activity Currency Risk
Day Sanctioned Speedhunter Showdown events Bank Low: cops are less aggressive
Night Illegal street races, cop chases REP High: busted loses the Heat multiplier and costs a Bank fine

Switching time: Go to your garage or a safehouse to switch between day and night.

A good loop:

  1. Grind a few day events to afford upgrades.
  2. At night, race a few events and let Heat build.
  3. Head back to a safehouse to cash REP with the multiplier.
  4. Repeat.

Heat Levels and Police

Heat What to expect
Low (1–2) Standard patrols. Easy to lose if you break line of sight
Mid (3) More units and faster cars joining chases
High (4–5) The fastest, most aggressive units plus roadblocks, spike strips, killswitches, helicopters and armored vehicles. Only stay out with a fast, durable car

The exact mix of units at each level varies, but the rule is simple: the higher the Heat, the bigger your REP multiplier and the harder it is to get home.

Escaping cops:

Being busted ends the night session. You pay a fine from your Bank and get the session's base REP without the Heat multiplier. You don't lose the car.

Cars and Builds

The game has 127 cars from 33 manufacturers, including Ferrari (back after being absent from Payback). Cars fall into four build types:

Build Best for Key parts
Race Circuits and sprints on road Grip tires, stiff suspension, top-speed engine parts
Drift Drift events and drift zones Drift tires and suspension, drift-focused differential
Road A mix of road and some off-road Balanced parts
Off-road Off-road events and trails Off-road tires and suspension

Performance level: Each part upgrade raises your car's performance level. Events show a recommended level. Stay close to or above it.

Handling tuning: Use the Handling tab to adjust grip vs drift. Many players prefer a grip-focused tune for races.

Engine swaps: Swapping to a bigger engine can boost a car's power a lot. Some swaps are unlocked only at high REP levels.

Parts, Tiers and the Performance Shop

Every car has slots for engine parts (such as intake, exhaust, ECU, turbo or supercharger and more), chassis parts (suspension, brakes, tires, differential) and auxiliary items.

Where to spend first:

  1. Tires and suspension that fit your build (they change handling the most).
  2. Engine parts that raise power.
  3. Nitrous.
  4. Everything else.

Settings Worth Changing

Setting Why
Transmission Manual can be faster once you're used to it; automatic is fine for most players
Camera Try different chase cameras. A further camera helps with police chases
HUD / minimap Keep the minimap visible at night so you can see cops and repair stations
Handling tune (per car) Move the slider toward grip for races, toward drift for drift events
Motion blur Many players turn it down for clarity

Money and REP Tips

Story Structure

The main story follows your racer as they get pulled into the fight against Palm City's corrupt High-Speed Task Force, led by Lt. Frank Mercer. As your REP goes up, new story chapters open.

Tips:

Event Types

Recommended performance level: each event lists one. Being a bit above it makes events much easier; being well below it makes them nearly impossible.

Collectibles

Collectible Reward
Billboards Bank/REP
Flamingos Rewards when you collect enough
Street Art Rewards when you collect enough
Speed Traps Bank or REP by star rating
Drift Zones Bank or REP by star rating
Jumps Bank or REP by star rating

Night Session Game Plan

A night run is a risk-and-reward loop. A simple plan that works:

  1. Leave a safehouse at full health and full nitrous.
  2. Chain two or three nearby street races. Every win adds REP and raises your Heat.
  3. Check your car's health and the map. Know where the nearest safehouse and repair stations are before starting another race.
  4. Stop when you feel pressured. If you're low on health or a cop chase won't end, head home to lock in your REP with the multiplier.
  5. Pick your escape route in advance. Back streets, alleys and off-road shortcuts shake cops better than highways.

If you're about to get busted: keep moving. Getting busted happens when you're stopped and surrounded, so any movement (even reversing) buys time. Aim for gaps between cop cars and use nitrous to break out.

Online and Crossplay

A Sensible Progression Plan

Stage Goal What to do
Early REP levels Learn the map; build your first car Day events for Bank, a few night races, collect easy Billboards and Speed Traps
Mid REP levels Unlock better parts and engine swaps Build a second car for a different event type; bank REP at Heat 2–3
Late REP levels Top parts and story finale Build a top race car and a drift or off-road car; push Heat 4–5 nights only with a fast, durable car
Post-story Completion Collectibles, remaining events, customization
