NBA 2K21: Offline Player's Guide (Post-Shutdown)

This guide explains what still works in NBA 2K21 now that its servers are gone. It covers the core gameplay (Pro Stick shooting, defense, playcalling) and how to get the most out of the offline modes that remain.

Researched September 2026, current as of the final PC build; online services ended 31 December 2022 and the game is delisted from Steam. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Server status: 2K shut down all NBA 2K21 multiplayer servers as of 12/31/2022. The Steam page says that after that date "all game functions requiring online servers will no longer function," and the game is no longer available for purchase on Steam. If you already own it, you can still download and play it from your library. Everything below focuses on what works offline.

Quick Start

  1. Accept that the online side is gone. MyTEAM, the Neighborhood (Park, Pro-Am, Rec, 2K Compete events), online head-to-head and anything that uses VC through 2K's servers are offline for good.
  2. Play Now, Blacktop, local multiplayer and the franchise modes (MyLeague/MyGM) are what's left. They're still a complete basketball sim.
  3. Use a controller. The game is built around the Pro Stick (right stick). Keyboard play works but is a real handicap for shot aiming and dribble moves.
  4. Learn Pro Stick shot aiming early. 2K21 introduced aiming jump shots and layups with the stick. It's the biggest change from older 2K games.
  5. Start on Pro or All-Star difficulty and adjust from there. Hall of Fame is a big jump.
  6. Tune sliders if the AI feels scripted. MyLeague exposes gameplay and sim sliders for exactly this.
  7. The PC version is the "current-gen" build. The next-gen features (The City, MyNBA, WNBA MyCareer) were PS5/Xbox Series only and never came to Steam.
  8. Want live online basketball? Moving to a newer NBA 2K release is the only official route.

What Works and What Doesn't

Mode Status on PC Notes
Play Now (quick game) Works NBA, classic and all-time teams
Blacktop Works Streetball-style pickup games offline
Local multiplayer Works Couch play on one PC with multiple controllers
MyLeague (offline) Works Full franchise control with sliders and customization
MyLeague Online Dead Shared online leagues ran on 2K's servers; only offline MyLeague saves still work
MyGM Works Franchise mode with role-playing GM elements
WNBA Works offline Wikipedia notes all 12 WNBA teams are playable across full seasons in 2K21
MyCAREER Unreliable/limited Built around VC and 2K's online services; expect progression features to fail
The Neighborhood (Park, Pro-Am, Rec) Dead Online-only
MyTEAM Dead Pack opening, auction house and seasons were all server-side
Online Play Now / ranked Dead Requires 2K servers
2K Share (downloadable rosters, draft classes) Dead Community content downloads were server-backed

If the game tries to connect when it starts and fails, carry on in offline mode. The modes marked "Works" don't need a connection.

Editions and Cover Athletes (for reference)

Edition Cover
Standard (current-gen, which includes PC) Damian Lillard
Next-gen standard (PS5/Xbox Series) Zion Williamson
Mamba Forever edition Kobe Bryant tribute cover

The game launched on 4 September 2020. The next-gen versions followed in November 2020.

Core Controls (Controller)

Difficulty Levels

Difficulty Who it suits

Pro Casual play; forgiving AI
All-Star Balanced default for most players
Superstar Tighter AI defense and smarter rotations
Hall of Fame Very punishing; best with slider tweaks

Franchise Modes: MyLeague and MyGM

These are where NBA 2K21's long-term value still lives offline.

MyLeague gives you control of one or all 30 teams, with deep customization over trades, contracts, the draft, league rules and sim sliders. It's the best mode for a long, realistic simulation.

MyGM adds role-playing management on top: dealing with owner expectations, player morale and staff. Choose it if you like the story side of running a team.

Franchise tips

Blacktop and Local Play

Blacktop is quick pickup basketball with no franchise attached. It's good for couch sessions or practicing specific players. With two or more controllers connected, local Play Now games are the only head-to-head left in 2K21.
