NBA 2K19: Offline Player's Guide

What you can still do in NBA 2K19 on PC after the online shutdown, plus the on-court fundamentals, MyPLAYER and Takeover systems, and franchise-mode tips that still make it worth booting up.

Status check: NBA 2K19's online servers were shut down on 31 December 2020. The Steam page now reads "NBA 2K19 is no longer available on the Steam store", and its feature list marks the Neighborhood and MyTEAM as "ONLINE SERVICE DISCONTINUED". If you own it, it is still in your library. Everything that needed 2K's servers — the Neighborhood, Pro-Am, MyTEAM, online Play Now, VC purchases and online leaderboards — is gone. Offline modes are what is left. For current NBA basketball, look at the latest NBA 2K release instead.

Quick Start

1. Treat 2K19 as an offline game. Play Now against the CPU, MyLEAGUE, MyGM and Blacktop are the reliable modes.
2. MyCAREER only survives in a stripped-down offline form. Owners have long reported that offline MyCAREER lets you play NBA games with a local MyPLAYER, but without "The Way Back" story beyond the opening, without the shops, and with its own offline progression rather than VC. Since the 2020 shutdown the online version is gone entirely — test before investing time.
3. Learn the shot meter. Release at the top of the jump for most jump shots. Different players have different release timing.
4. Play through the post and the pick-and-roll. The CPU struggles with a well-run pick-and-roll and with good post-ups.
5. Adjust sliders and difficulty. Offline 2K is endlessly tunable; if games are too easy or too hard, fix it in settings rather than quitting.
6. Use the rosters that come with the game — community roster sharing ran through 2K's servers.
7. Takeover is 2K19's big feature. Get hot and your player unlocks boosted abilities; with a whole team, Team Takeover.
8. Save franchise files often in multiple slots.

Modes: What Still Works

On-Court Fundamentals

Shooting

• Timing: jump shots use a meter; release near the peak for a good result. Each player's release differs, so practice with your main players in Freestyle/practice.
• Shot selection: open threes and shots at the rim are the most efficient. Contested long twos are the worst shots in the game.
• Free throws: consistent rhythm; the timing matches a player's normal release.

Dribbling and the pick-and-roll

• Use the pick-and-roll to create mismatches. Call for a screen, let your ball handler come off it, and read whether the big man drops or switches.
• Size-up moves and hesitation dribbles get defenders leaning; attack the lean.
• Do not over-dribble: the shot clock and turnovers punish it.

Post play

• Bigs with good post ratings can back down smaller defenders. Post hooks, fades and drop steps are strong against the CPU.
• Kick out to shooters when the double team comes.

Defense

• Stay in front rather than gambling on steals. Reaching fouls add up.
• Contest shots with a hand up; a good contest matters more than a block attempt.
• Switch intelligently on screens against dangerous shooters.
• Use on-ball defense with your best defender and let the AI handle help defense.

Takeover

Takeover was introduced in 2K19:

• Players have a Takeover meter that fills as they play well (making shots, good passes, stops).
• When full, their Takeover activates, boosting specific abilities tied to their play style (for example shooting or finishing).
• Team Takeover activates when the team plays well together, boosting the whole unit.
• Feed the hot player. Once Takeover is active, run plays for them and keep the momentum going.

MyPLAYER Building (for MyCAREER, if available)

2K19's MyPLAYER builder chose a primary and a secondary skill, which together set your archetype, attribute caps and badge options.

Rules of thumb:

• Guards: playmaking plus shooting is the most versatile; pure slashers struggle when defenses sag.
• Wings: shooting plus defending gives a useful two-way player.
• Bigs: a stretch big (shooting) or a rebounding/defending big both work; avoid builds with low speed and no shooting.
• Badges come in Bronze, Silver, Gold and Hall of Fame tiers and are earned by doing the related action in games.
• Pick a height/weight/wingspan that fits your position; extreme choices change animations and speed.

MyCAREER: The Way Back (Story Notes)

The story follows your player from China to the G League and finally to the NBA, with a cast including Anthony Mackie, Aldis Hodge and Haley Joel Osment. It also includes authentic CBA commentary in Mandarin Chinese, a first for the series. Endorsements are tied to your popularity, and team chemistry affects your role. That full experience needed 2K's servers, so it is effectively gone.

What offline MyCAREER looks like

Steam forum reports from the game's live years (weak evidence, but consistent) describe offline MyCAREER as:

• No story and no shop. You get a MyPLAYER and games, but not the narrative, the Neighborhood stores or the barber/tattoo shops.
• Offline currency. Upgrades use points earned in offline play instead of VC.
• Fragile badge progression. One owner reported badges stopped progressing offline; another said quitting a game via the "ask out" option after earning 25+ MyPoints past halftime fixed it, and warned that the Dunk Contest and 3-Point Contest could break an offline save.
• Difficulty quirks. Some owners reported difficulty resetting to Rookie when reloading saves — recheck settings each session.

Back up your save folder before long sessions. If you want a proper single-player career, MyLEAGUE or MyGM are far more complete in 2026.

MyLEAGUE and MyGM Tips

• MyLEAGUE gives you full control: trades, contracts, draft, sliders, and league expansion/customization options. Great for long-term franchise play.
• MyGM adds a front-office story layer with relationships and owner goals.
• Trade logic: the CPU values young, cheap, high-potential players. Stockpile draft picks and prospects for trades.
• Cap management: avoid long, expensive contracts for older players; rookie deals are your most valuable assets.
• Sim smartly: play big games yourself, simulate the rest. Adjust sim sliders if results feel unrealistic.
• Save before trade deadlines and the draft, so you can reload bad moves.

Settings and Sliders

• Difficulty: from Rookie up to Hall of Fame. Pick the level where you win about half of close games.
• Game sliders: shooting success, fouls, fatigue and injuries can all be tuned. Common offline tweaks increase fouls and fatigue for realism.
• Camera: 2K and Broadcast views are popular; try a few to find one that shows spacing well.
• Quarter length: shorter quarters speed up franchise play; realistic stats need longer quarters or stat adjustments.

MyGM Story Notes

MyGM in 2K19 is a story-driven front-office mode. Its achievements point at the main beats without spoiling much: you deal with a leak of information to the media, face a character named Andrew in the Summer League, test jerseys with street ballers, and the best ending makes you part owner with Tex. The best ending is one of the rarest achievements (A New Beginning), so play MyGM choices carefully and keep a manual save before big decisions.

Achievements in 2026

NBA 2K19 has 50 Steam achievements. Many are now impossible because they need the Neighborhood, MyTEAM, Pro-Am or Play Now Online. Plan around what still works.

Still obtainable offline (reliable):

MyCAREER achievements (uncertain offline): Badge of Honor, Badge of Extreme Honor, Capped Out, Take Over, My Every Day Player, Unleash Chaos, My All-Star, Draft, Schmaft (Rookie of the Year) and Grindin' Away (90 overall) are tied to MyCAREER progress. Some may be reachable in offline MyCAREER; ones that need the story, practice facility, shops or Newsstand (Puttin' In Work, I Spy Spalding, Two Bits, Rat-A-Tat-Tat, Gimme A Boost, A Little Something Extra) almost certainly are not.

Unobtainable since the shutdown: everything in MyTEAM (More Loot!, My Precious, Infinity, G.O.A.T., Undefeated and others), the Neighborhood (Rattle On, Marathon Man, The 5 D's, Ride It Where I Like, You Do Know Jack, Get Your Feet Wet), MyCOURT (Inception, My House, My Rules), Crews and Pro-Am (We The People, No 'I' In Team, On The Rise), MyLEAGUE Online (Thrill By Association) and Play Now Online (Perfection, Locked In, The Rest Is History).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Expecting online modes to work. They were shut down on 31 December 2020.
• Buying VC or content. There is nothing to spend it on anymore and purchases were server-tied.
• Forcing contested shots instead of moving the ball.
• Gambling for steals on defense and giving up open layups.
• Ignoring fatigue — tired players shoot worse; rotate.
• Single save slot in MyLEAGUE.

Advanced Tips

• Play calling: use the in-game play calls for your team's stars; the CPU defends isolation better than well-run sets.
• Hunt mismatches after switches: post up guards with bigs, and attack slow bigs off the dribble.
• Transition offense: push after defensive rebounds for easy points before the defense sets.
• Timeouts: use them to stop CPU runs and to reset Takeover momentum.
• Custom leagues: MyLEAGUE lets you build fantasy drafts and custom rules — a good way to refresh the game years later.
