Mortal Kombat X: Complete Guide

A player's guide to Mortal Kombat X (with the XL content on PC): controls, the meter and stamina systems, variations, how to learn a character, beginner-friendly picks, Krypt and Towers, Faction Wars, and online tips.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (XL content reached PC on October 4, 2016; no balance patches since). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Pick a variation, not just a character. Each fighter has three variations with different special moves. Your choice changes your whole game plan.
  2. Learn one character in one variation before exploring others.
  3. The meter has three bars. One bar = enhanced (EX) special, two bars = Breaker (combo escape), three bars = X-Ray.
  4. Stamina fuels running, backdashes, and interactables. Don't empty it carelessly — it also powers escapes.
  5. Block is a button. Holding block beats most attacks; learn which attacks are overheads (hit crouching blockers) and lows (hit standing blockers).
  6. Throws beat block. If an opponent blocks a lot, throw them.
  7. Stage interactables are powerful, but predictable. Use them to escape the corner or punish.
  8. Tutorial and Practice mode are your friends. Learn punishes (what's safe and unsafe) for your main.

Controls (Controller defaults)

MKX uses four attack buttons labeled 1 to 4.

Action Xbox-style controller Description
Front Punch (1) X Fast punch
Back Punch (2) Y Stronger punch
Front Kick (3) A Fast kick
Back Kick (4) B Stronger kick
Block RT Hold to block
Interact RB Stage interactables
Throw LB (or 1+3 / 2+4) Throw forward/back
Flip stance LT Switch stance
Run Forward, forward (hold) Uses stamina

Keyboard users can rebind everything; most players on PC use a controller or arcade stick.

Core Systems

Meter

Bars Use
1 Enhanced special move (EX)
2 Breaker (escape a combo)
3 X-Ray (cinematic super)

Meter management is central: Breakers save rounds, but X-Rays can end them. Many pros use meter for EX specials and Breakers more than X-Rays.

Stamina

Fatalities, Brutalities, and Faction Kills

Variations

Every character has three variations. A few examples:

Character Variations
Scorpion Ninjutsu, Hellfire, Inferno
Sub-Zero Cryomancer, Grandmaster, Unbreakable
Cassie Cage Spec Ops, Hollywood, Brawler
Kotal Kahn Blood God, Sun God, War God
Johnny Cage Fisticuffs, A-List, Stunt Double
Sonya Blade Special Forces, Demolition, Covert Ops
Liu Kang Dualist, Flame Fist, Dragon's Fire
Erron Black Gunslinger, Marksman, Outlaw

Roster

Per Wikipedia, 25 fighters launched in the base game, and 8 more came as DLC:

On PC, the XL content (Kombat Pack 2 and more) arrived on October 4, 2016, bringing the PC version to parity with consoles. The XL era also added a new stage, The Pit, and several stage Brutalities.

How to Learn a Character

  1. Pick a variation and read its move list.

  3. Find your fast pokes and learn which are safe.
  4. Learn your best punish (what you do after blocking an unsafe move).
  5. Practice your Fatality and Brutality for style points.
  6. Play against AI on medium, then online.

Practice Mode Checklist

  1. Turn on frame data and the input display.
  2. Record the dummy doing your opponent's common strings and practice blocking them.
  3. Practice your main combo from a poke, from a jump-in, and from a punish.
  4. Practice your Breaker timing with the dummy doing a long combo.
  5. Try each variation of your main for five minutes to see which fits you.

Modes

Faction Wars factions

Faction Flavor
Lin Kuei Sub-Zero's clan of ninja assassins
Special Forces Earthrealm's military (Sonya, Jax)
Black Dragon Kano's criminal cartel
White Lotus Liu Kang's and Kung Lao's Shaolin order
Brotherhood of Shadow Shinnok and Quan Chi's cult

Your faction choice is cosmetic plus Faction Kills; it doesn't affect character stats, so pick whichever you like and focus on playing.

Online features, Living Towers, and Faction Wars depend on WB's servers and on the PC player base; activity is much lower than in Mortal Kombat 1, so expect longer matchmaking.
