Mortal Kombat 11: Beginner-to-Advanced Guide

This guide covers the fundamentals of Mortal Kombat 11 (Fatal Blows, Krushing Blows, meter, Flawless Block, frame data), how to pick and learn a main, and how to get the most from the Krypt, Towers of Time, and Kustom Variations.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final content patch; NetherRealm ended DLC and update support on July 2, 2021 (the only recent Steam update, Feb 26, 2026, was for Steam Deck Verified status). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status note: MK11 is complete and no longer balanced or expanded. The series moved on to Mortal Kombat 1. Balance and the roster are frozen, so everything below should stay accurate. The online player base is smaller than at launch, so expect longer queues at off-peak hours.

Quick Start

  1. Get MK11 Ultimate if buying new. It bundles the base game, Kombat Pack 1, the Aftermath story expansion, and Kombat Pack 2. The standalone packs are often discounted during the recurring franchise sales.
  2. Do the Tutorial all the way through. MK11's tutorial teaches frame data, footsies, and punishing better than most fighting games. The Advanced and Strategy sections are worth the time.
  3. Learn one character's basics first. You need a fast poke, a mid, a low, an anti-air, one reliable combo, and one safe special.
  4. Block low by default. Crouch-blocking stops lows and most normals. Stand block only for overheads and jump-ins.
  5. Save your Fatal Blow. It unlocks under 30% health. It's a combo ender, a punish, and a comeback tool. Don't throw it out raw.
  6. Use Tournament variations for online play. Ranked and Kombat League use the official variations, not your custom ones.
  7. Frost unlocks through Story mode. Finishing Chapter 4 unlocks her (she can also be bought). Play the story early anyway, for the cinematics and to sample the roster.
  8. Don't pay for Time Krystals just to unlock things. Towers of Time, the Krypt, and Klassic Towers unlock most cosmetics with normal play.

Controls and Button Layout

MK11 uses four attack buttons.

Input PlayStation Xbox What it is
Front Punch Square X Jabs, fast pokes
Back Punch Triangle Y Stronger punches, many launchers
Front Kick X A Kicks, often lows or mids
Back Kick Circle B Stronger kicks, sweeps
Block R2 RT Hold to block
Throw L1 LB Grab; hold back while throwing to throw the other way
Interact R1 RB Stage interactables
Flip Stance L2 LT Swap front/back limb orientation
Fatal Blow L2 + R2 LT + RT Available once under 30% health

Amplifying a special uses the input shown next to "Amplify" in that move's entry in the move list. Defaults can be remapped and PC keyboard layouts vary, so check the Controls section of Settings, and treat the Front Punch / Back Punch / Front Kick / Back Kick labels as the universal names in move lists.

Core Systems

Meter: Offensive and Defensive bars

MK11 splits meter into two Offensive bars and two Defensive bars. Both refill over time.

Bar Main uses
Offensive Amplifying special moves (more damage, extra hits, better frames), some variation abilities
Defensive Wake-up (getup) attacks, forward/back escape rolls on knockdown, Breakaway (costs 2 bars)

Breakaway: during an opponent's combo while you're airborne, press Forward + Block with both Defensive bars full to escape the juggle. Keep your opponent's Defensive meter in mind before you end a combo with a long juggle.

Fatal Blow

Krushing Blows

Krushing Blows are special versions of certain moves that trigger under specific conditions, such as landing the move as a counter hit, as a punish, or after a specific setup. They deal bonus damage with an X-ray-style cinematic. Each Krushing Blow can only happen once per match. Check your character's move list: it lists the Krushing Blow condition for every eligible move.

Flawless Block

Block just before an attack connects to get a Flawless Block. After that, you can use a Flawless Block Attack (a special reversal) to interrupt block strings. Timing is strict, so practice against strings you know are coming.

Frame data (the basics)

Turn on frame data in Practice mode.

Term Meaning
Start-up Frames before the move hits; lower is faster
On block (+/-) Your advantage after the opponent blocks; negative means they act first
Punishable Negative enough that the opponent can hit you back with a fast move

If a move is more negative on block than your fastest move's start-up, you can punish it. Check your character's fastest normal in Practice so you know which gaps are real. Learn your character's fastest punish (usually a standing or crouching Front Punch or Back Punch string) and use it whenever the opponent leaves a large gap.

Getting up

After a knockdown, you can: stay down, roll (escape) forward or back using Defensive meter, or do a getup attack (reversal) using Defensive meter. Mixing these stops opponents from timing their pressure on your wake-up.

Roster

Base roster (25): Baraka, Cassie Cage, Cetrion, D'Vorah, Erron Black, Frost (story unlock), Geras, Jacqui Briggs, Jade, Jax Briggs, Johnny Cage, Kabal, Kano, Kitana, Kollector, Kotal Kahn, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Noob Saibot, Raiden, Scorpion, Shao Kahn (originally a pre-order bonus), Skarlet, Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero.

DLC (12):

Pack Characters
Kombat Pack 1 Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, Terminator T-800, Sindel, Joker, Spawn
Aftermath (May 26, 2020) Fujin, Sheeva, RoboCop
Kombat Pack 2 Mileena, Rain, John Rambo

Aftermath also added a story continuation, Friendships, and Stage Fatalities.

Good first mains

Character Why
Scorpion Simple teleport and spear specials, clear combos, strong fundamentals
Sub-Zero Ice Ball and slide give easy control; slower but forgiving
Liu Kang Fireballs plus good close-range pressure, teaches spacing
Jacqui Briggs Direct rushdown with clear strings
Sonya Blade Good pokes and projectiles, balanced
Kitana Zoning with fans plus solid normals

Pick someone you enjoy and stay with them. Knowing one character well beats knowing a little about five.

Variations: Tournament vs Kustom

In Practice, start with the Tournament variation that has your favorite tools, and learn only its specials first.

Single-Player Content

Story Mode

A cinematic campaign that follows the time-bending Kronika. Aftermath continues it with Shang Tsung, Fujin, and Nightwolf at the center. Story gives a reward and unlocks Frost.

Klassic Towers

Arcade-style ladders with character endings. Good for learning matchups against the AI and earning Koins and cosmetics.

Towers of Time

Rotating challenge towers with modifiers. Use Konsumables (single-use items) and augments on your gear to handle the harder towers. Rewards include gear, skins, and currency. Some towers are much harder than normal play expects. That's intentional, and Konsumables are the answer.

The Krypt

A third-person exploration mode on Shang Tsung's island. You spend Koins on chests and use items (such as Shao Kahn's Hammer and Scorpion's Spear) to reach new areas and hidden chests. The Krypt has most of the unlockable skins, gear, brutalities, and Easy Fatality tokens.

Currencies

Currency Source Spend on
Koins Nearly everything Krypt chests
Soul Fragments Towers, Krypt Special Krypt chests and doors
Hearts Performing Fatalities and Brutalities, Towers Special Krypt chests and doors
Time Krystals Leveling, some rewards; also sold for money Premium Shop cosmetics

Finishers

Online Play

Online connection quality matters a lot. Use a wired connection for any serious play.

How do I unlock Frost? Complete Chapter 4 of Story mode, or buy her from the store.

How do I do Fatalities? Open Pause, then Move List, then Finishers. Stand at the listed range (Close, Mid, Far) and enter the input during "Finish Him/Her". Easy Fatality tokens simplify it.
