Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak: Complete Guide
This guide covers Monster Hunter Rise and its Sunbreak expansion on PC, from your first Kamura Village quests through High Rank, Master Rank, and the Anomaly Investigation endgame. It explains Wirebugs, Switch Skills, Buddies, weapon choice, armor skills, Qurious Crafting, and progression order.
Researched September 2026. Current as of the final Sunbreak Bonus Update (Ver. 16, which added Primordial Malzeno as the final monster). The game is content-complete. Capcom's ongoing support has moved to Monster Hunter Wilds, and Monster Hunter Stories 3 launched March 13, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Platform note: Capcom announced that from October 14, 2025 (Windows 10's end of support), it no longer guarantees Monster Hunter Rise will run on Windows 10. The game still runs there, but support is only guaranteed on supported OS versions.
Quick Start
- Pick a weapon and learn it in the Training Area. All 14 weapon types are viable. The Training Area shows combos and lets you test Switch Skills.
- Wirebugs are your best tools. You can recover from knockdowns (wirefall), move quickly, and use Silkbind attacks. Watch the Wirebug gauge.
- Eat at the Tea Shop before every hunt. Dango give more HP and stamina plus Dango skills (for example, Dango Defender for extra damage reduction). Read each skill's description at the Tea Shop and pick for the hunt.
- Take a Buddy. A Palamute is a mount and fighter, and a Palico is support. Palamute riding speeds up travel a lot.
- Use Wyvern Riding. Hitting a monster with enough silkbind damage lets you ride it and slam it into walls or other monsters.
- Village quests are solo training. Hub quests are for multiplayer and harder. Doing both gets you through High Rank quickly.
- Carve and capture. Capturing (traps plus tranquilizers) gives more reward slots. Carve when you kill.
- Don't overthink armor early. Mix and match sets for key skills, then optimize in High and Master Rank.
- Break parts. Monster parts drop rare materials when broken (horns, tails, claws).
- Sunbreak unlocks after the base game's High Rank story. Clear Kamura's High Rank progression to reach Master Rank.

Switch Skills
Each weapon has Switch Skills: alternate moves you can swap in at the Smithy or item box. Sunbreak adds Switch Skill Swap, letting you change between two scroll setups mid-hunt. Check the Training Area to learn each weapon's key counters and Silkbind moves.
Wirebugs and Movement
- Wirebugs: dash through the air, recover from being hit (wirefall), and use Silkbind attacks.
- Great Wirebugs: special points on maps for long launches.
- Wirebug gauge: recharges over time. Some Silkbind attacks use more than one bug.
- Spiribirds: small birds around the map that boost your HP, stamina, attack, and defense for the hunt. Grab them on the way to the monster.
Buddies

Sunbreak (Master Rank)
- A new hub at Elgado Outpost, new maps (The Citadel, Jungle, Forlorn Arena), and Master Rank (MR) quests.
- Follower Quests team you up with NPC characters. They're great for solo players.
- Flagship monsters: the "Three Lords" Malzeno, Lunagaron, and Garangolm, with Gaismagorm as the story's final threat.
- Post-launch free updates (Ver. 11 in August 2022 through the Ver. 16 Bonus Update in June 2023) added many more monsters, including Lucent Nargacuga, Seething Bazelgeuse, Violet Mizutsune, Risen Chameleos, Chaotic Gore Magala, Velkhana, Amatsu, and finally Primordial Malzeno (Bonus Update Ver. 16).
Endgame: Anomaly Investigations
- Afflicted monsters (infected by the Qurio) appear in Anomaly Investigations and scale in difficulty as your Anomaly Research level rises.
- Qurious Crafting uses Qurio materials to add augments to armor and weapons, such as extra skill slots or stats.
- This is the main endgame grind: farm investigations, craft augments, and refine your build.

Notable Sunbreak Skills
Sunbreak added build-defining skills, including Bloodlust, Dereliction, Mail of Hellfire, Chain Crit, Bladescale Hone, and Coalescence. Some come from monster set bonuses and some are regular armor skills, so check the skill's source in the equipment menu. Many endgame builds are built around one or two of these.
Decorations and Charms
- Decorations slot into armor for extra skills. Rampage Decorations (Sunbreak) go into weapon Rampage slots.
- Talismans (charms) come from the Melding Pot. Endgame players meld for charms with key skills and good slots.
Recommended Route for New Hunters
- Village 1–3★: learn your weapon on early monsters (Great Izuchi, Arzuros, Lagombi, Kulu-Ya-Ku, Tetranadon). Build a full set of armor from whatever you're hunting a lot.
- Village 4–5★ and the Magnamalo arc: Rampage quests teach you installations (ballistas, cannons, dragonator). Use them. Rampage fights are about defending gates, not solo DPS.
- Hub Low Rank: switch to Hub quests for multiplayer. Solo is fine too, because monster HP scales with the number of hunters.
- Hub High Rank: the main armor upgrade path. This is where you start caring about decorations and specific skills.
- Sunbreak Master Rank: travel to Elgado Outpost. Use Follower Quests while you learn the new monsters.
- Endgame: Anomaly Investigations, Qurious Crafting, and charm melding.
Rampage Quests (base game)
- Installations: ballistas, cannons, machine cannons, and the dragonator give big damage.
- Gate defense: keep monsters away from the gates. If gates fall, you fail.
- Rampage skills: weapons have Rampage slots that add extra effects. In Sunbreak they're replaced by Rampage Decorations.
Hunting Basics
- Mark the monster (on the map or by locating it) before you go in.
- Sharpen your weapon when it dulls. Low sharpness makes attacks bounce.
- Break parts for rare materials.
- Mount (Wyvern Riding) to deal damage and control monsters.
- Use traps and tranquilizers to capture monsters for extra rewards.
- Carry potions, antidotes, and whetstones at minimum.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping Dango. It's free survivability.
- Using all your Wirebugs at once. Keep one for wirefall recovery.
- Wearing defense-only armor. Offense ends fights faster.
- Ignoring elemental weaknesses. Check the Hunter's Notes for weaknesses.
- Chasing a monster in the open instead of using Wyvern Riding.
- Farming monsters for materials you don't need. Plan your gear.
- Skipping Follower Quests. They're great solo help in Sunbreak.
Advanced Tips
- Switch Skill Swap covers both attack and defense setups in one hunt.
- Use the Argosy and Meowcenaries to farm materials passively.
- Anomaly Investigations: set a filter for the monsters you need Qurio materials from.
- Rampage Decorations add big bonuses to weapons, so fill those slots.
- Learn counters. Most weapons have a counter or offset Silkbind that turns monster attacks into openings.
- Solo players: Follower Quests and two Buddies make Master Rank much easier.
