MECCHA CHAMELEON: Hide-and-Seek Strategy Guide

How to paint, pose, and hide as a Chameleon, how to hunt as a Seeker, and how the modes, maps, and lobby settings work in the paint-yourself hide-and-seek hit from Lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the post-launch collab-map updates and the Nintendo Switch 2 release (September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Two sides. Chameleons (Hiders) paint their white bodies to blend into the stage. Hunters (Seekers) have to find every Chameleon before time runs out.
  2. Colour alone isn't enough. Good camouflage matches colour, material/texture, and shape at once. A perfectly coloured blob floating in the middle of a room still stands out.
  3. Pick your body first. You can be a blob or a cube, in petite, normal, or plump size, and you can pose (curl up, lie down, and so on). Choose a spot that suits your body, or a body that suits your spot.
  4. Hide where people don't look closely. Corners, cluttered shelves, busy textures, and spots at the edge of the room beat obvious furniture.
  5. Hunters shoot with paint guns. A hit reveals a Chameleon. Some lobbies limit how many shots you get, so check the rules before you start spraying.
  6. Whistle for points (if you dare). Chameleons can whistle (taunt) to reveal their rough position in exchange for points for staying unfound. Hosts can also turn on a "forced taunting" setting that makes hiders whistle automatically.
  7. Private lobbies for friends, public for chaos. Lobbies hold up to 24 players, but 2–12 is the sweet spot for fun.
  8. Try the modes. Beyond standard hide-and-seek there's Infection, Double, and Reverse Chicken Race.

Modes

Mode How it works Tips
Standard hide-and-seek Hunters vs Chameleons, with a time limit The core mode. Learn maps here
Infection Caught Chameleons become Hunters Hide early and far from the first Hunters. Late in the round, the hunting pack is huge, so perfect camouflage matters more than distance
Double Everyone hides first, then everyone hunts. Whoever finds the most players wins Your hiding spot and your hunting both count. Remember where you saw people moving while you were painting
Reverse Chicken Race Players paint themselves on pedestals, then others try to find them after a viewing period A pure painting skill test. Match the pedestal and background from the angle viewers will see you

Hosts can adjust round rules, such as the Hunter shot limit, in lobby settings. Since an August 2026 update, players can vote to skip waiting time between phases.

Maps

Official maps include:

Collab maps added after launch:

The Steam Workshop has a large collection of community maps. The host has to have them, so if you're hosting a Workshop map, subscribe before starting the lobby.

Workshop safety: In late July 2026 a few Workshop maps (e.g. "Laser Tag Neon", "Chroma Grid Arena") were found carrying malware. Update 3.1.0 closed the hole that let maps run unrelated files, and those maps were removed. Keep the game updated and stick to well-reviewed maps.

The paint mode

A reliable painting process

  1. Choose the spot first. Pick a place with one dominant surface behind or under you.
  2. Pick the body. Cube for boxy spaces, blob for organic ones. Smaller sizes fit tight gaps.
  3. Lay down the base colour that matches most of what's behind you.
  4. Add the detail (shadow edges, pattern lines, dirt) that's on the real surface. Hunters often notice missing shading before wrong colours.
  5. Pose. Curl up or lie down to flatten your outline against the surface.
  6. Check from the Hunter's angle. Most Hunters look from standing height at the room entrance. Paint for that view, not for a close-up.

Where to hide

Whistling and deception points

Whistling reveals where you are but earns deception points for every moment Hunters miss you. Whistle when:

Don't whistle when a Hunter is already looking toward you or when you're the last Chameleon left.

Performance

MECCHA CHAMELEON is an Unreal Engine 5 game, so older PCs can struggle. If your frame rate is low:

Minimum specs on Steam list Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-class CPU, and a DirectX 11/12 GPU.
