# MECCHA CHAMELEON: Hide-and-Seek Strategy Guide

How to paint, pose, and hide as a Chameleon, how to hunt as a Seeker, and how the modes, maps, and lobby settings work in the paint-yourself hide-and-seek hit from Lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the post-launch collab-map updates and the Nintendo Switch 2 release (September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Two sides.** **Chameleons (Hiders)** paint their white bodies to blend into the stage. **Hunters (Seekers)** have to find every Chameleon before time runs out.
2. **Colour alone isn't enough.** Good camouflage matches **colour, material/texture, and shape** at once. A perfectly coloured blob floating in the middle of a room still stands out.
3. **Pick your body first.** You can be a **blob or a cube**, in **petite, normal, or plump** size, and you can **pose** (curl up, lie down, and so on). Choose a spot that suits your body, or a body that suits your spot.
4. **Hide where people don't look closely.** Corners, cluttered shelves, busy textures, and spots at the edge of the room beat obvious furniture.
5. **Hunters shoot with paint guns.** A hit reveals a Chameleon. Some lobbies limit how many shots you get, so check the rules before you start spraying.
6. **Whistle for points (if you dare).** Chameleons can whistle (taunt) to reveal their rough position in exchange for points for staying unfound. Hosts can also turn on a "forced taunting" setting that makes hiders whistle automatically.
7. **Private lobbies for friends, public for chaos.** Lobbies hold up to **24 players**, but **2–12** is the sweet spot for fun.
8. **Try the modes.** Beyond standard hide-and-seek there's **Infection**, **Double**, and **Reverse Chicken Race**.

## Modes

| Mode | How it works | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| **Standard hide-and-seek** | Hunters vs Chameleons, with a time limit | The core mode. Learn maps here |
| **Infection** | Caught Chameleons become Hunters | Hide early and far from the first Hunters. Late in the round, the hunting pack is huge, so perfect camouflage matters more than distance |
| **Double** | Everyone hides first, then everyone hunts. Whoever finds the most players wins | Your hiding spot and your hunting both count. Remember where you saw people moving while you were painting |
| **Reverse Chicken Race** | Players paint themselves on pedestals, then others try to find them after a viewing period | A pure painting skill test. Match the pedestal and background from the angle viewers will see you |

Hosts can adjust round rules, such as the Hunter shot limit, in lobby settings. Since an August 2026 update, players can **vote to skip waiting time** between phases.

## Maps

Official maps include:

- **Hide-and-Seek Mansion**
- **Indoor Country**
- **Sewer**
- **Backrooms**
- **Penguin Hotel**
- **Sugarland**
- **Osaka**

**Collab maps** added after launch:

- **HIKAKIN Museum** (YouTuber HIKAKIN collab, July 11, 2026)
- **Banban's Kindergarten** (Garten of Banban collab, July 25, 2026)
- **Exit 8** (The Exit 8 collab, August 1, 2026)

The **Steam Workshop** has a large collection of community maps. The host has to have them, so if you're hosting a Workshop map, subscribe before starting the lobby.

> **Workshop safety:** In late July 2026 a few Workshop maps (e.g. "Laser Tag Neon", "Chroma Grid Arena") were found carrying malware. Update 3.1.0 closed the hole that let maps run unrelated files, and those maps were removed. Keep the game updated and stick to well-reviewed maps.

### Map-reading tips

- **Mansion / Penguin Hotel:** Lots of furniture and patterned surfaces. Try matching wallpaper or rug patterns, not flat furniture colours.
- **Backrooms:** Very repetitive yellow walls and carpet. Easy to match colours, but Hunters sweep here systematically. Low, flat poses against walls do well.
- **Sewer:** Dark, grimy, uneven textures. Muddy mixed paint beats a clean single colour.
- **Sugarland:** Loud, saturated colours. Bold, confident paint jobs look natural here.
- **Osaka:** Signs, shopfronts, and busy street clutter. Hide inside the visual noise.

## Painting Like a Pro (Chameleon Guide)

### The paint mode

- You paint your white body directly with a **colour picker** and an **eyedropper**. Use the eyedropper on the surface you're hiding against to grab its exact colour.
- **Material matters as much as colour.** A glossy surface painted onto a matte wall, or the reverse, gives you away under the stage lighting. Match the surface finish.
- **Shape matters too.** Pick blob or cube, and a size, to fit the space you're hiding in. A cube fits against shelves and boxes. A blob fits in rounded clutter and plants.

### A reliable painting process

1. **Choose the spot first.** Pick a place with one dominant surface behind or under you.
2. **Pick the body.** Cube for boxy spaces, blob for organic ones. Smaller sizes fit tight gaps.
3. **Lay down the base colour** that matches most of what's behind you.
4. **Add the detail** (shadow edges, pattern lines, dirt) that's on the real surface. Hunters often notice missing shading before wrong colours.
5. **Pose.** Curl up or lie down to flatten your outline against the surface.
6. **Check from the Hunter's angle.** Most Hunters look from standing height at the room entrance. Paint for that view, not for a close-up.

### Where to hide

- **Against something, not in the open.** A body touching a wall or floor looks like part of it. One floating in space looks like an object.
- **Low or high, not at eye level.** Hunters scan at eye level first.
- **Busy areas.** Cluttered shelves, patterned floors, signs, and plants hide imperfect paint.
- **Avoid the obvious first-sweep spots** (behind the only couch, the only closet). Hunters check those first.
- **Look at how the light falls.** A spot in shadow hides small colour mistakes.

### Whistling and deception points

Whistling reveals where you are but earns **deception points** for every moment Hunters miss you. Whistle when:

- Hunters have already walked past and are facing away.
- You're confident in your paint.
- The round is close to ending.

Don't whistle when a Hunter is already looking toward you or when you're the last Chameleon left.

## Hunting Like a Pro (Seeker Guide)

- **Sweep systematically.** Clear the room edges, then the middle. Randomly spinning the camera misses things.
- **Look for wrong outlines.** Blobs and cubes have shapes that don't match real objects. A cube on a round table, or a lump on a flat wall, is suspicious.
- **Look for lighting mismatches.** A patch that stays bright when everything around it is in shadow, or a surface with the wrong shine, is often a painted player.
- **Check low and high.** Floors, ceilings, and top shelves are where good Chameleons hide.
- **Count your shots.** If the lobby limits shots, save them for strong suspicions. A missed shot may also give away your position to Chameleons.
- **Remember the map.** Once you know what a room normally looks like, new "objects" stand out right away.
- **Listen for whistles.** They pinpoint Chameleons who are fishing for points.
- **In Infection, spread out.** Several Hunters sweeping the same room is wasted time.

## Lobby and Party Tips

- **Private lobby** for friends or streams with viewers. **Public lobby** for quick games with strangers.
- **Keep it to 2–12 players** for the best matches. At 24, rounds get chaotic and maps feel crowded.
- **Adjust the time limit** to your group. New players need more painting time.
- **Use shot limits** in experienced groups so Hunters can't just spray everything.
- **Rotate maps.** Once everyone knows a map's hiding spots too well, switch.
- **Streamers:** The game is designed to be streamer-friendly. Private lobbies with viewer invites are the standard setup.

## Performance

MECCHA CHAMELEON is an Unreal Engine 5 game, so older PCs can struggle. If your frame rate is low:

- Lower the resolution scale and shadow quality first.
- Cap FPS to your monitor's refresh rate.
- Update your GPU drivers.
- Check the Steam community guides for current performance tweaks.

Minimum specs on Steam list Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-class CPU, and a DirectX 11/12 GPU.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Only matching colour.** Material and shape give you away more often than colour.
- **Hiding in the open.** Always press up against a surface.
- **Painting for close-up.** Hunters see you from across the room. Paint the big shapes first.
- **Obvious furniture spots.** The first sweep hits them.
- **Whistling while being watched.** Only whistle when Hunters are facing away.
- **Hunters wasting limited shots** on random guesses.
- **Oversized lobbies** for new groups. Start small.

## Advanced Tips

- **Copy lighting as well as the surface.** Paint in the shadow gradient where the wall meets the floor. It's the detail that fools experienced Hunters.
- **Use the eyedropper to save time.** Sample the main wall or floor colour straight from the stage instead of picking by eye each round.
- **Use clones.** You can create up to two clones of yourself; place them somewhere plausible-but-wrong to burn Hunter attention and limited shots.
- **Fake objects.** A cube painted like a crate in a storage room, or a blob painted like a bush, can hide in plain sight.
- **Change spots between rounds.** Regular groups learn your favourite spots quickly.
- **In Double, hide near where Hunters start.** People expect hiders to run far away.
- **In Reverse Chicken Race, paint for the viewing angle.** Viewers see you from set positions, so what they don't see doesn't matter.

## FAQ

**How many players can join a lobby?**
Up to 24, with 2–12 recommended for the best experience.

**Is it on console?**
Yes. Nintendo Switch 2 since September 9, 2026. PC via Steam since June 2026 (and GeForce Now).

**Can I play with friends privately?**
Yes. Create a private lobby and invite them.

**How do Hunters catch Chameleons?**
By hitting them with the paint gun. Hosts can limit shot counts.

**What does whistling do?**
It reveals where you are, but earns deception points based on how long Hunters fail to find you.

**Are there custom maps?**
Yes. The game supports Steam Workshop, and there are many community maps plus official collab maps like HIKAKIN Museum, Banban's Kindergarten, and Exit 8.

**Why is the game so popular?**
It's cheap, simple to learn, and very funny in groups and on stream. It sold over 20 million copies by August 2026.
