# Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Complete Trilogy Guide

A spoiler-light guide to playing the whole Shepard trilogy in Mass Effect Legendary Edition: choosing a class, carrying choices between games, the missables that matter, surviving Mass Effect 2's Suicide Mission, and building a strong ending in Mass Effect 3.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC release (no content updates since 2021; the Legendary Edition is complete). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## What's in the Package

- **Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3** single-player, remastered, in one launcher.
- **Over 40 DLC** including story DLC (Bring Down the Sky, Kasumi's Stolen Memory, Zaeed, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker, Arrival, From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega, Citadel) plus promo weapons and armors.
- **Not included:** Pinnacle Station (ME1), because its source code was corrupted, and ME3's multiplayer.
- **Biggest changes:** Mass Effect 1 got the most work, with better aiming, a dedicated melee button, rebalanced weapons, better squad AI, a faster Mako with new physics, shorter elevator rides and less frustrating boss fights. ME2 and ME3 got visual upgrades and some rebalancing; ME3's Galactic Readiness system was reworked because multiplayer is gone.

## Quick Start

1. **Play in order and carry one Shepard through.** Your ME1 save imports into ME2, and ME2 into ME3. Choices, romances, who lived and who died all carry.
2. **Pick your class for all three games.** It carries forward. See the class table below.
3. **Lean into Paragon or Renegade.** Both are valid, but big persuasion checks later reward committing to one direction (or keeping both high).
4. **In ME1, invest in Charm or Intimidate.** These unlock key persuasion options, including one that can save a squadmate on Virmire.
5. **Do the loyalty missions in ME2.** Loyalty is the single biggest factor in who survives the Suicide Mission.
6. **Buy or earn all three ship upgrades in ME2** before going through the Omega 4 Relay.
7. **In ME3, do side missions before the point of no return.** Everything adds War Assets that affect your ending options.
8. **Play the Citadel DLC in ME3 before the final mission.** It's the trilogy's farewell and is best experienced before the end.
9. **Save often, in separate slots.** Many choices are permanent and some checks are easy to miss.
10. **Choose difficulty per game.** ME1 on higher difficulty can be tedious; ME2 and ME3 are great on Hardcore or Insanity once you know the combat.

## Classes

| Class | Style | Key tools | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soldier | Guns and durability | Adrenaline Rush (ME2/ME3), all weapons | New players; straightforward shooting |
| Engineer | Tech and control | Overload, Incinerate, drones | Stripping shields, fire damage |
| Adept | Pure biotics | Singularity, Warp, Throw | Crowd control, biotic combos |
| Infiltrator | Sniping and stealth | Tactical Cloak, sniper rifles | Precise, long-range play |
| Sentinel | Tech plus biotics | Tech Armor, Warp, Overload | Tanky hybrid; very forgiving |
| Vanguard | Biotic charge | Biotic Charge, Nova (ME3) | Aggressive close-range play; the most fun on Insanity once learned |

**In ME1 LE,** every class can use every weapon; untrained weapons simply perform worse. **In ME2,** you pick a bonus power later by learning it from a loyal squadmate. **In ME3,** power evolutions branch at later ranks, so read both options.

### Defenses and counters (ME2 and ME3)

| Defense | Color | Best counter |
|---|---|---|
| Shields | Blue | Overload, SMGs, tech powers |
| Barriers | Purple | Warp, Reave |
| Armor | Yellow | Incinerate, Warp, heavy weapons |

Enemies with defenses resist most crowd control until the defense is stripped. Strip first, then Throw, Pull or Lift.

## Mass Effect 1

### Structure

After Eden Prime and the Citadel, you can take the main missions in any order: **Therum, Feros and Noveria**, then **Virmire**, then the endgame.

**Common order:** Therum first to recruit Liara early (she's a strong biotic and lore-heavy squadmate), then Feros, then Noveria, then Virmire.

### Squad

Kaidan Alenko, Ashley Williams, Garrus Vakarian, Tali'Zorah, Urdnot Wrex and Liara T'Soni.

### Key choices and missables

- **Virmire is the big one.** You'll have to make a choice that costs a squadmate, and there's a separate confrontation with Wrex. To save Wrex, you need enough Charm or Intimidate, or to have completed his family armor side mission before Virmire.
- **Feros:** there are choices about how to deal with the Thorian's influence on the colonists. Non-lethal options exist.
- **Noveria:** a choice about the Rachni Queen that echoes in ME2 and ME3.
- **The Council at the end:** a major choice that changes the political setup of ME2 and ME3.
- **Bring Down the Sky** (DLC) is included; do it for extra XP and a decision that also carries forward.
- **Squadmate side missions:** talk to your crew after each main mission; their personal quests unlock through conversation.

### ME1 tips

- **Mako exploration** is optional side content on uncharted worlds. The LE Mako handles far better than the original; it's worth doing a few for XP, credits and resources.
- **Omni-gel** is used to bypass locks; convert junk items into it to keep your inventory clean.
- **Spectre gear** becomes available later at the Citadel; save credits for it.
- **Level squadmates' persuasion-free skills** toward their strengths; Shepard is the one who needs Charm or Intimidate.

## Mass Effect 2

### Structure

1. Recruit your squad through dossiers.
2. Complete loyalty missions.
3. Upgrade the Normandy.
4. Main story missions, leading to the Omega 4 Relay and the Suicide Mission.

### Squad

Miranda Lawson, Jacob Taylor, Mordin Solus, Garrus, Jack, Grunt, Samara, Thane Krios, Tali, Legion, plus the DLC squadmates Kasumi Goto and Zaeed Massani (both included in LE).

### Loyalty

Each squadmate has a loyalty mission. Loyal squadmates unlock a bonus power and are far more likely to survive the Suicide Mission.

**Loyalty conflicts:** two pairs of squadmates will argue (Miranda and Jack; Tali and Legion). Resolving it without losing either's loyalty requires a high enough Paragon or Renegade score. If you can't pass the check, pick who you'd rather keep loyal; you can sometimes regain loyalty later by talking to the one you disappointed.

### The Normandy upgrades that save lives

Three ship upgrades directly prevent squadmate deaths during the opening of the Suicide Mission:

| Upgrade | How to get it |
|---|---|
| Heavy Ship Armor | Unlocked through Jacob |
| Multicore Shielding | Unlocked through Tali |
| Thanix Cannon | Unlocked through Garrus |

You unlock them by talking to the squadmate after recruitment, then research them with resources.

### Resources and planet scanning

Probing planets gives Element Zero, Iridium, Palladium and Platinum for research. Don't scan everything; focus on "rich" readings. Buy the scanner and fuel upgrades early.

### Suicide Mission checklist (spoiler-light)

1. **All three ship upgrades researched.**
2. **Everyone loyal** (ideally).
3. **Don't delay after the crew is taken.** At a certain point in the story, your crew is abducted. Go through the Omega 4 Relay immediately to save as many of them as possible. Do your remaining loyalty missions before triggering the mission that leads to this event.
4. **Pick the right specialists:**
   - **Tech specialist:** a loyal tech expert (Tali, Legion or Kasumi are safe choices).
   - **Fireteam leader:** a loyal leader (Garrus, Miranda or Jacob).
   - **Biotic specialist:** a loyal strong biotic (Samara or Jack).
   - **Escort:** send a loyal squadmate.
5. **Take loyal squadmates with you** through the final stretch; weaker or disloyal members left behind are at more risk.

It's possible for everyone to survive, and for Shepard to die. Save before the relay.

### Story DLC in ME2

- **Lair of the Shadow Broker:** essential for Liara's story, and gives useful rewards. Play it after the Horizon mission.
- **Arrival:** bridges ME2 and ME3; play it last, after the Suicide Mission.
- **Overlord:** Hammerhead missions plus a strong final sequence.
- **Kasumi's Stolen Memory** and **Zaeed** recruitment are straightforward extras.

## Mass Effect 3

### Structure

Priority missions drive the story, with the Citadel as your hub. Side missions and N7 missions add War Assets.

### War Assets and your ending

- Every completed mission, choice and resolved conflict adds **War Assets** to your Effective Military Strength.
- In Legendary Edition, readiness was rebalanced because multiplayer is gone; you can reach the best outcomes from single-player alone.
- **The point of no return is the assault on Cerberus Headquarters.** The game warns you. Finish side missions, DLC and conversations before it.

### Key choices (spoiler-light)

- **Tuchanka:** a long arc about the krogan genophage. Outcomes depend heavily on who survived ME1 and ME2.
- **Rannoch:** the quarian and geth arc. A peaceful resolution is possible but requires specific ME2 choices (both Tali and Legion alive and loyal, handled well) and high enough Paragon or Renegade scores, plus certain side missions completed.
- **Squadmates from past games** can die or be absent depending on your imports. Your history shapes a lot here.

### ME3 DLC

- **From Ashes:** adds Javik, a Prothean squadmate with great lore. Take him everywhere for commentary.
- **Leviathan:** reveals important backstory about the Reapers.
- **Omega:** Aria's side story.
- **Citadel:** the trilogy's farewell party and a great combat mission. Play it before the point of no return; ideally after the Rannoch arc.

### ME3 tips

- **Weight matters.** Carrying fewer or lighter weapons shortens power cooldowns. Casters should carry one light weapon.
- **Mods and ammo powers** drive damage; upgrade the guns you use at the Normandy's weapon bench.
- **Scan systems for assets,** but leave when Reapers get alerted. Use them to find fuel, artifacts and War Asset items.
- **Talk to everyone on the Normandy and Citadel** between missions; many side quests are picked up by overhearing conversations.

## Missables Checklist

| Game | Missable | How to avoid missing it |
|---|---|---|
| ME1 | Saving Wrex on Virmire | Charm/Intimidate or do his family armor mission first |
| ME1 | Squadmate personal quests | Talk to your crew after each main mission |
| ME2 | Full crew survival | Go through the Omega 4 Relay right after the crew is abducted |
| ME2 | Squad survival | All loyalty missions and all three ship upgrades |
| ME2 | Loyalty conflicts | Bank Paragon/Renegade before triggering Miranda/Jack and Tali/Legion |
| ME3 | Rannoch peace | Import a save where Tali and Legion survived and were loyal |
| ME3 | Citadel DLC | Play before Cerberus Headquarters |

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Starting ME2 or ME3 fresh when you meant to import.** Always import to keep your story consistent.
- **Splitting Paragon and Renegade evenly without investing in persuasion.** You'll fail critical checks.
- **Rushing ME2's main story.** Later missions trigger events that punish unfinished loyalty missions.
- **Ignoring ship upgrades in ME2.** Squadmates die in the opening of the Suicide Mission without them.
- **Hoarding weapons in ME3.** Heavy loadouts cripple power cooldowns.
- **Forgetting Pinnacle Station isn't included.** Old ME1 guides mention it; it's not in LE.
- **Playing the ME3 Citadel DLC after the credits.** It works, but it's much better before the end.

## Advanced Tips

- **Biotic and tech combos in ME3.** Priming with one power and detonating with another (for example Warp on a target lifted by Pull) does big area damage. Build a squad whose powers set each other up.
- **Vanguard on Insanity** is a favorite for experienced players: Biotic Charge restores barriers, so you stay alive by staying aggressive.
- **Use ME2's bonus power slot well.** Useful picks include Barrier, Fortification or Reave for survival, or a crowd control power your class lacks.
- **Speed up ME1's early game** by selling or converting junk constantly and buying better weapons and armor at the Citadel early.
- **PC mods:** ME3Tweaks Mod Manager is the standard tool for installing Legendary Edition mods, including community fixes for ME1.
- **Controller support** is native on PC, along with 21:9 widescreen.

## FAQ

**Do I need to play Mass Effect 1 first?**
Recommended. The trilogy's biggest payoffs come from choices made in ME1. The Legendary Edition makes ME1 much more playable than the original.

**Can everyone survive the ME2 Suicide Mission?**
Yes. Get everyone loyal, research all three ship upgrades, pick the right specialists, and go through the Omega 4 Relay immediately after the crew is abducted.

**Is multiplayer in ME3 Legendary Edition?**
No. It was excluded, and the War Assets system was rebalanced for single-player.

**Is Pinnacle Station included?**
No, its source code was corrupted and it couldn't be remastered.

**How long does the trilogy take?**
Expect well over 100 hours if you do most side content across all three games.

**Can I romance different characters in each game?**
Yes, though staying faithful to a ME1 or ME2 romance changes some scenes later.
