Mafia III: Definitive Edition: Complete Guide

A player's guide to Mafia III: Definitive Edition: how the racket-by-racket takedown loop works, how to divide New Bordeaux between your three lieutenants without triggering betrayal, stealth and combat tips, money management, collectibles, the three story DLCs, and how the endings branch (spoiler-light).

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Definitive Edition (all DLC included), now also sold in Mafia: The Omertà Collection (August 14, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. The game is a loop by design. In each district you hurt rackets, take out the racket bosses, then confront the capo running the district. Repeat across the city.
  2. Every district goes to one of your three lieutenants: Cassandra, Thomas Burke, or Vito Scaletta. Who gets what shapes their loyalty and the ending.
  3. Spread districts fairly. A lieutenant who keeps getting passed over may turn on you.
  4. Stealth is powerful. Crouch, take cover and use silent takedowns; much of the game can be played quietly.
  5. Whistle to lure enemies into cover for silent kills.
  6. Interrogate key enemies after defeating them for intel on the racket boss.
  7. Use wiretaps to reveal enemies and points of interest in each district.
  8. Collect money regularly through your consigliere service so you're not carrying a pile of cash around.
  9. Unlock favors from lieutenants; they add weapons, services and perks that change how you play.

Story and Setup (No Major Spoilers)

It's 1968 in New Bordeaux, a fictional take on New Orleans. Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran, returns home. After his surrogate family is wiped out by the Italian mob under Sal Marcano, Lincoln sets out for revenge. With help from his former CIA handler John Donovan and his friend Father James Ballard, he builds a new criminal organization by allying with three outcasts:

Lieutenant Background
Cassandra The true Haitian leader
Thomas Burke An Irish boss whose turf was given to a rival
Vito Scaletta An exiled Sicilian mafioso (the protagonist of Mafia II)

Marcano's son Giorgi and his capos (each running a different scheme) are your targets.

Early Game Priorities

  1. Play the opening chapters straight through. The prologue sets up the story and the tutorial systems; the open world and the takedown loop open up afterward.
  2. Get all three lieutenants on side as the story introduces them. Their first favors come quickly.
  3. Pick a starter district and fully clear it to learn the loop before spreading out.
  4. Unlock a suppressed weapon and wiretaps early; they make every district easier.
  5. Bank your cash before any risky mission.
  6. Keep healing items stocked before every racket or capo mission.

Difficulty Advice

The District Takedown Loop

  1. Find the district's rackets. Each district has rackets run by the mob.
  2. Do racket damage. Kill enforcers, destroy goods, interrogate informants, and complete objectives to reduce the racket's income.
  3. Take down the racket boss. Kill or recruit them.
  4. Confront the capo. When enough rackets fall, the district's capo becomes available.
  5. Assign the district. Choose which lieutenant gets it. They earn income from it and you get a kickback.

Districts

The map has ten districts: Bayou Fantom, Delray Hollow, Barclay Mills, Frisco Fields, Pointe Verdun, Tickfaw Harbor, Southdowns, River Row, Downtown, and the French Ward.

Managing Your Lieutenants

Recommendation: unless you're deliberately role-playing, spread districts roughly evenly. It keeps all favors available and avoids a costly betrayal.

Favors and Perks

Each lieutenant offers favors (services you can call in) and perks (passive bonuses) that improve as their earnings grow. Examples of the kinds of benefits:

Plan your district assignments partly around which favors you want next.

Combat and Stealth

Stealth

Gunfights

Brutal takedowns

Melee takedowns are fast and brutal; they're great for thinning a group quietly.

Driving

Money

Collectibles

Collectibles include several kinds of period magazines, Vargas paintings, album covers, and propaganda posters spread around New Bordeaux. Wiretapping a district's junction boxes helps reveal points of interest there. None of the Steam achievements require collectibles, so hunt them for the lore and fun, either as you clear each district or after the main story.

Side activities that do have achievements

The Definitive Edition's achievement list points to the optional content worth your time:

Activity Achievement goal
Each lieutenant's side missions (Cassandra, Burke, Vito) Complete all of them for each lieutenant
Racket informants Recruit 15 (or kill 15, for a separate achievement)
Racket bosses Flip 16, or kill all of them
Bounty Hunting assignments Complete all
Sammy's bar Start and fully complete its renovation
Grow House Fully upgrade it and max the Herbalism level; sell a single batch for $10,000+
Slim's re-election billboards Destroy 10
Vehicle traps and vehicle takedowns Trigger 10 traps; perform 10 takedowns
Money Earn $500,000; spend $500,000; hold $150,000 between wallet and bank

Some of these belong to the story DLC content bundled in the Definitive Edition rather than the base campaign, so they open up as you reach that content; if an activity isn't on your map yet, keep progressing the story.

The DLCs (All Included in the Definitive Edition)

DLC Theme
Faster, Baby! A civil-rights storyline in a new area, with car chases and a sheriff as the villain
Stones Unturned A military/CIA mission alongside Donovan
Sign of the Times Investigating a cult

Each adds new missions and rewards. They're accessible from the main game once you reach the right point in the story.

Endings (Spoiler-Light)

Mafia III has multiple endings, depending on:

Per Wikipedia, outcomes range from Lincoln's empire flourishing to it collapsing, and from Lincoln leaving the life, to taking over, to being killed. Save before the final choice if you want to see more than one.
