Kingdom Rush: Complete Tower Defense Guide

Everything you need to clear the original Kingdom Rush on Steam: tower choices and upgrade paths, how stars and challenges work, hero picks, boss prep, and a plan for Veteran, Heroic and Iron.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release (content complete; no balance patches recently). Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis, a prequel-era continuation, launched 24 September 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Four tower types, eight specialisations. Archers, Barracks, Mages and Artillery each upgrade three times, then branch into one of two level 4 towers.
  2. Barracks are your wall. Soldiers block enemies on the path; everything else does damage while they are held. Almost every good defence has a Barracks at the choke point.
  3. Match damage to armour. Mages punch through armour; Archers and Artillery struggle against it. Artillery wrecks groups; Archers and Mages can hit flyers, Artillery cannot.
  4. Use both spells constantly. Rain of Fire (the meteor spell) and Call Reinforcements are on cooldowns; unused cooldown is wasted damage.
  5. Call waves early for bonus gold. Clicking the next-wave skull early gives extra gold and shortens cooldowns. Do it whenever your defence is comfortably ahead.
  6. Stars are permanent power. You earn up to 3 stars per stage, plus more from challenges, and spend them in the upgrade tree. Replay earlier stages if you get stuck.
  7. Bring a hero. Heroes level up during a stage, can be moved anywhere, and respawn after dying. All 13 are included in the Steam version at no extra cost.
  8. Read the enemy cards. New enemies show an info card with their resistances and tricks. It is the fastest way to learn what beats them.

Towers and Upgrade Paths

Every tower goes through three base levels, then chooses between two specialisations. Level 4 towers have purchasable abilities that you buy one rank at a time.

Tower line Strengths Weaknesses Level 4 options
Archers Fast single-target damage, hits flying enemies, cheap Low damage against heavy armour Rangers Hideout; Musketeer Garrison
Barracks Blocks the path, soaks damage, regenerates soldiers Low damage on its own Holy Order (Paladins); Barbarian Mead Hall (Barbarians)
Mages Magic damage ignores armour, good against tanks Slow attack, weak against magic-resistant enemies Arcane Wizard; Sorcerer Mage
Artillery Area damage, excellent against packs Cannot hit flyers, slow shells miss fast enemies Big Bertha; Tesla x104

Specialisation notes

The "Specialist" achievement asks you to build all eight specialisations at least once, so try each.

Spells and Heroes

Spells

Spell What it does Best use
Rain of Fire Meteors deal heavy area damage Clumped waves, finishing a boss's escorts, emergency leaks
Call Reinforcements Drops two temporary soldiers anywhere on the path Blocking a leak, stalling a runner, pulling aggro off your Barracks

Both spells get stronger through the star upgrade tree, including extra meteors and tougher reinforcements.

Heroes

The Steam version includes 13 heroes. You pick one before each stage. Heroes gain levels during the stage and respawn after a short timer if they die. Well-known options include Gerald Lightseeker (a sturdy knight), Alleria Swiftwind (an archer with a cat companion), Malik Hammerfury (a melee brawler), Bolin Farslayer, Magnus Spellbane, Ignus, Denas, Elora Wintersong, Ingvar Ironside, Hacksaw, Oni and Thor.

How to use a hero well:

Stars, Upgrades and Difficulty

Mode Rules Tips
Campaign (Casual / Normal / Veteran) Standard waves; difficulty scales enemy toughness Finish on Normal first, then revisit for Veteran
Heroic Challenge Elite waves, only one life to lose Over-build your main choke; keep a Reinforcements cast ready for leaks
Iron Challenge One huge wave with restricted tower types and one life Read which towers are allowed before deploying, then build fast and upgrade the key towers fully

The "Supreme Defender" achievement requires completing the campaign in Veteran mode, and there are separate achievements for completing all Heroic and all Iron stages.

FAQ

Which Kingdom Rush should I play first? The original. It is the start of the story, and Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis (released 24 September 2026) goes back in time to the events around it.

Are heroes paid DLC on Steam? No. The Steam store states that all 13 legendary heroes are unlocked at no additional cost.

How many stars can I get? Up to 3 per stage from the campaign, plus extra stars from each stage's Heroic and Iron challenges.

What is the best tower? There is no single best tower. Most players lean on a Barracks at the main choke (Paladins for durability), Mages for armour (Arcane Wizard), and Artillery for swarms, with Archers covering flyers.

Is there a Veteran-only reward? The "Supreme Defender" achievement requires completing the campaign in Veteran mode.

Is the game on sale? Ironhide announced a publisher sale alongside Kingdom Rush 6's launch in September 2026, with the original Kingdom Rush at 90% off. Check the store for current pricing.
