# Kingdom Rush: Complete Tower Defense Guide

Everything you need to clear the original Kingdom Rush on Steam: tower choices and upgrade paths, how stars and challenges work, hero picks, boss prep, and a plan for Veteran, Heroic and Iron.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release (content complete; no balance patches recently). Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis, a prequel-era continuation, launched 24 September 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Four tower types, eight specialisations.** Archers, Barracks, Mages and Artillery each upgrade three times, then branch into one of two level 4 towers.
2. **Barracks are your wall.** Soldiers block enemies on the path; everything else does damage while they are held. Almost every good defence has a Barracks at the choke point.
3. **Match damage to armour.** Mages punch through armour; Archers and Artillery struggle against it. Artillery wrecks groups; Archers and Mages can hit flyers, Artillery cannot.
4. **Use both spells constantly.** Rain of Fire (the meteor spell) and Call Reinforcements are on cooldowns; unused cooldown is wasted damage.
5. **Call waves early for bonus gold.** Clicking the next-wave skull early gives extra gold and shortens cooldowns. Do it whenever your defence is comfortably ahead.
6. **Stars are permanent power.** You earn up to 3 stars per stage, plus more from challenges, and spend them in the upgrade tree. Replay earlier stages if you get stuck.
7. **Bring a hero.** Heroes level up during a stage, can be moved anywhere, and respawn after dying. All 13 are included in the Steam version at no extra cost.
8. **Read the enemy cards.** New enemies show an info card with their resistances and tricks. It is the fastest way to learn what beats them.

## Towers and Upgrade Paths

Every tower goes through three base levels, then chooses between two specialisations. Level 4 towers have purchasable abilities that you buy one rank at a time.

| Tower line | Strengths | Weaknesses | Level 4 options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archers | Fast single-target damage, hits flying enemies, cheap | Low damage against heavy armour | Rangers Hideout; Musketeer Garrison |
| Barracks | Blocks the path, soaks damage, regenerates soldiers | Low damage on its own | Holy Order (Paladins); Barbarian Mead Hall (Barbarians) |
| Mages | Magic damage ignores armour, good against tanks | Slow attack, weak against magic-resistant enemies | Arcane Wizard; Sorcerer Mage |
| Artillery | Area damage, excellent against packs | Cannot hit flyers, slow shells miss fast enemies | Big Bertha; Tesla x104 |

### Specialisation notes

- **Rangers Hideout:** poison arrows and Wrath of the Forest, which roots enemies in place. Great general-purpose DPS and control for crowded paths.
- **Musketeer Garrison:** long-range sniping that can instantly kill non-boss targets, plus shrapnel. Best against big single targets and armoured elites.
- **Holy Order (Paladins):** tough soldiers that heal and use Holy Strike. The best pure blocker for long hold points.
- **Barbarian Mead Hall:** high-damage fighters with throwing axes. Trades some durability for killing speed.
- **Arcane Wizard:** a disintegrating death ray and a Teleport ability that sends enemies back down the path. Superb against tanks and against leaks.
- **Sorcerer Mage:** polymorphs enemies into sheep, lowers armour, and summons a rock elemental that blocks like a soldier.
- **Big Bertha:** huge area damage with cluster bombs and missiles. Your answer to swarms.
- **Tesla x104:** chained lightning that ignores armour and jumps between enemies. Strong against clustered, armoured waves.

The "Specialist" achievement asks you to build all eight specialisations at least once, so try each.

### Tower placement rules of thumb

- **Barracks first at the earliest long straight or bend**, with damage towers overlapping that spot.
- **Put Artillery where enemies bunch up** behind your soldiers.
- **Mages near the exit** as a safety net for armoured enemies that survive the gauntlet.
- **Archers anywhere flyers pass,** because flying enemies ignore your soldiers.
- **Set rally points.** You can move each Barracks' soldiers along the path within range. Pulling them to the tower's best overlap spot is a free damage boost.
- **Sell sparingly.** Selling refunds only part of the cost. Plan the layout rather than rebuilding it.

## Spells and Heroes

### Spells

| Spell | What it does | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Rain of Fire | Meteors deal heavy area damage | Clumped waves, finishing a boss's escorts, emergency leaks |
| Call Reinforcements | Drops two temporary soldiers anywhere on the path | Blocking a leak, stalling a runner, pulling aggro off your Barracks |

Both spells get stronger through the star upgrade tree, including extra meteors and tougher reinforcements.

### Heroes

The Steam version includes 13 heroes. You pick one before each stage. Heroes gain levels during the stage and respawn after a short timer if they die. Well-known options include Gerald Lightseeker (a sturdy knight), Alleria Swiftwind (an archer with a cat companion), Malik Hammerfury (a melee brawler), Bolin Farslayer, Magnus Spellbane, Ignus, Denas, Elora Wintersong, Ingvar Ironside, Hacksaw, Oni and Thor.

How to use a hero well:

- **Use them as a mobile Barracks.** Park the hero where your soldiers are weakest.
- **Never let the hero chase.** A dead hero is a hole in your defence for the respawn duration.
- **Pick for the stage.** Ranged or magic heroes help on flyer-heavy stages; tanky melee heroes help where a single choke holds everything.

## Stars, Upgrades and Difficulty

- **Campaign stars:** up to 3 per stage, based on how many lives you keep.
- **Challenge stars:** each completed stage unlocks two challenge modes that award extra stars.
- **Upgrade tree:** stars buy permanent upgrades for each tower type and both spells. If you are short, replay stages for missed stars.
- **Undo is allowed.** You can reset upgrades and re-spend stars to try different builds.

| Mode | Rules | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign (Casual / Normal / Veteran) | Standard waves; difficulty scales enemy toughness | Finish on Normal first, then revisit for Veteran |
| Heroic Challenge | Elite waves, only one life to lose | Over-build your main choke; keep a Reinforcements cast ready for leaks |
| Iron Challenge | One huge wave with restricted tower types and one life | Read which towers are allowed before deploying, then build fast and upgrade the key towers fully |

The "Supreme Defender" achievement requires completing the campaign in Veteran mode, and there are separate achievements for completing all Heroic and all Iron stages.

## Content Overview

The Steam edition bundles:

- **The main 12-stage campaign** against the dark wizard Vez'nan.
- **Winter Storm**, a 2-stage mini-campaign.
- **The Rise of the Bandits**, a 2-stage mini-campaign.
- **The Curse of Castle Blackburn**, a 4-stage campaign.
- **Four bonus stages:** The Ruins of Acaroth, The Rotten Forest, The Lair of Sarelgaz and The Fungal Forest.
- **Extra game modes** (Heroic and Iron) and an in-game encyclopedia of towers and enemies.

## Bosses and Threats

The achievements list the major bosses: **The Juggernaut, J.T., Vez'nan, Gul'Thak, Sarelgaz, Greenmuck, Ulguk-Hai the Troll Warlord, Myconid the Rotten Fungus, Lord Blackburn and Moloch the Demon Overlord**, plus **The Kingpin**, who you must stop from escaping.

General boss prep:

- **Stack magic damage.** Arcane Wizards' death ray and Musketeers' snipes chunk big health bars; Tesla helps against armoured escorts.
- **Layer Barracks.** Bosses crush soldiers. Two Barracks in sequence, with rally points staggered, buys far more time than one.
- **Save Rain of Fire for the adds**, not the boss. Clearing escorts keeps your soldiers alive to block.
- **Teleport is your panic button.** Arcane Wizards can send an enemy back up the path.

Notable enemy types from the achievements to watch for:

- **Demons** explode when they die; tough soldiers survive the blasts.
- **Wererats** can sicken soldiers; kill them quickly.
- **Troll Pathfinders** show up on icy stages.
- **Shrooms** can poison soldiers.
- **Legions** replicate if you do not kill them fast enough.

## Secrets and Easter Eggs

Kingdom Rush is packed with hidden interactions, many tied to achievements:

- **Sheep:** click sheep on stages until they pop (the "Ovinophobia" achievement wants you to kill 10 or more by hand).
- **Twin Rivers:** you can catch a fish.
- **Icewind Pass:** free the sasquatch.
- **The Silveroak Outpost:** recruit the maximum number of elves.
- **Other hidden achievements:** find an elusive acorn, five legendary lost ice-shrooms, a ninja master rat, a mysterious crow, a hidden monster under water, and help Fredo escape.
- **Sunray:** fire it 20 times for its achievement.
- **The Citadel:** keep at least 3 Imperial Guards alive.

Click on odd-looking scenery. Most easter eggs are triggered by clicking something repeatedly.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Building only Archers.** Heavily armoured enemies will walk through a pure Archer defence.
- **Forgetting flyers.** Artillery cannot hit them and soldiers cannot block them.
- **Leaving spells on cooldown ready.** Use them every wave.
- **Spreading upgrades thin.** One fully upgraded specialisation usually beats three half-upgraded towers.
- **Never calling waves early.** The bonus gold compounds; you are leaving economy on the table.
- **Ignoring rally points.** Default soldier positions are often not the tower's best overlap spot.
- **Playing Iron blind.** Check which towers are allowed before placing anything.

## Advanced Tips

- **Front-load economy.** Cheap early towers plus early wave calls snowball into level 4 towers much faster.
- **Build the level 4 tower, then buy abilities in order of impact.** For Arcane Wizards, the death ray usually matters more than extra range; for Paladins, healing keeps the line alive.
- **Stagger soldier rally points** so enemies meet a second Barracks after breaking the first.
- **Use Reinforcements to reset boss aggro** when your Barracks is about to die.
- **Re-spec for challenges.** Heroic and Iron often favour different upgrade paths than the campaign.
- **Check the encyclopedia before Veteran.** Knowing resistances saves you from rebuilding mid-wave.

## FAQ

**Which Kingdom Rush should I play first?**
The original. It is the start of the story, and Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis (released 24 September 2026) goes back in time to the events around it.

**Are heroes paid DLC on Steam?**
No. The Steam store states that all 13 legendary heroes are unlocked at no additional cost.

**How many stars can I get?**
Up to 3 per stage from the campaign, plus extra stars from each stage's Heroic and Iron challenges.

**What is the best tower?**
There is no single best tower. Most players lean on a Barracks at the main choke (Paladins for durability), Mages for armour (Arcane Wizard), and Artillery for swarms, with Archers covering flyers.

**Is there a Veteran-only reward?**
The "Supreme Defender" achievement requires completing the campaign in Veteran mode.

**Is the game on sale?**
Ironhide announced a publisher sale alongside Kingdom Rush 6's launch in September 2026, with the original Kingdom Rush at 90% off. Check the store for current pricing.
