Insurgency: Sandstorm: Complete Guide

A practical guide to Insurgency: Sandstorm for new and returning players: how the hardcore gunplay works, classes and supply points, game modes, the Commander/Observer fire-support loop, loadout advice, and what changed in the 2025-2026 updates.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 1.21 "Operation: Breachpoint" (released 28 May 2026) and its July 2026 minor patch. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. There is no crosshair. Aim down sights for anything beyond point-blank. Hip-fire is only for doorways and panic moments.
  2. You die in one or two hits. Treat every corner as dangerous. Slow, deliberate movement beats sprinting in the open.
  3. Start in Co-op. Checkpoint against bots teaches maps, recoil, and pacing without getting farmed by veterans.
  4. Use your Supply Points wisely. Armor, optics and utility all cost Supply and weight. A light, sensible kit is better than an overloaded one.
  5. Play the objective. Captures and cache destruction win rounds; kills don't. Being on the point gives you a reason to exist.
  6. Listen. Footsteps, reloads and voice lines give away enemies constantly. Good headphones are the best upgrade you can buy for this game.
  7. Stick with your squad. Traded kills and crossfire win engagements; lone wolves become respawn timers.
  8. Pair the Commander with an Observer. Fire support only works when the Commander is near an Observer carrying the radio. This pairing wins games.
  9. Tag and call enemies. Use voice or quick markers; nobody sees your minimap-less world except you.
  10. Don't waste ammo. Magazines are finite and partially-spent mags are retained. Fire controlled bursts.

Movement tools

Ammunition and reloading

Partially empty magazines go back into your pouches on a normal reload. A faster "drop the mag" reload exists but throws away the remaining rounds. Count your shots and reload behind cover.

Classes

Eight classes, each with slot limits per team:

Class Role Notes
Rifleman Frontline all-rounder Most slots, flexible loadout
Breacher Close-quarters entry Shotguns/SMGs, breaching charges
Advisor Support rifleman Varies by faction; carries extra utility
Demolitions Anti-vehicle and explosive support Rockets/launchers, explosives
Marksman Mid-to-long range precision DMRs/bolt actions
Gunner Suppression LMGs, bipod is essential
Observer Radio carrier Enables Commander fire support
Commander Calls fire support Needs an Observer nearby to call it in

The Commander-Observer loop

  1. The Observer carries the radio. The Commander must be close to them to request support.
  2. The Commander chooses a support type (artillery, strikes, smoke, reconnaissance, etc., depending on faction) and marks the target.
  3. Good commanders call smoke to cover a push, and strikes on defenders holding the next objective.
  4. Update 1.20 added Tier 3 challenges such as "Kill 500 enemies with Fire Support as a Commander", so there's now a long-term progression reason to play this pair well.

Fire support is asymmetric: Security leans on modern air support such as strafing runs and helicopters (which enemy rocket launchers can shoot down), while Insurgents lean on improvised options such as drone strikes, rocket artillery and gas (a gas mask protects you). Both sides have artillery and smoke options; the exact menu is shown on the Commander's radio screen. Faction arsenals are asymmetric: Security fields modern Western weapons (e.g. M4A1, L85A2), Insurgents field Soviet/Chinese and older weapons (e.g. AK-74, M1 Garand).

Supply Points and Loadouts

Every item costs Supply Points (SP) and adds weight. Heavier loadouts slow you and drain stamina faster.

Loadout rules of thumb

Budget priority

  1. Primary weapon plus optic you're comfortable with.
  2. Light armor.
  3. Smoke grenade.
  4. Frag or incendiary.
  5. Extra ammo carrier if the class chews through mags.

Game Modes

Versus (PvP)

Mode Summary
Push Attackers capture objectives in sequence; defenders hold as long as possible
Firefight Capture-point mode with no respawn waves; teammates return when you capture points
Frontline Tug-of-war over a line of objectives
Domination Hold more points than the enemy
Defusal Round-based bomb plant/defuse, no respawns. Moved to the limited-time rotation in Update 1.18 (April 2025)
Team Deathmatch / Free For All Pure combat modes. Free For All also moved to limited-time in 1.18
Ambush / Skirmish Moved to the limited-time rotation from 17 November 2025 due to low population

Which modes are live changes often. Limited-time playlists rotate every week or two (for example Hardcore Lite and Gang War ran 2-16 December 2025), and 1.18 added First Blood, a limited-time LMGs-and-sidearms-only mode. Check the in-game playlist or Steam news for the current rotation.

Player counts: the Steam page advertises PvP with up to 14v14. The Update 1.17 notes describe Skirmish as two 14-player teams, with 10v10 on console, so expect smaller lobbies on console and in some playlists.

Co-op (PvE)

Mode Summary
Checkpoint (Security / Insurgents) Capture objectives in sequence against bots
Hardcore Checkpoint Tougher bots and stricter rules
Outpost Defend objectives against waves of attackers
Survival Push through the map with limited respawns

Co-op is the best way to learn maps and practise recoil. Limited-time modes such as Hardcore Lite and Gang War rotate in periodically.

Maps

The rotation includes long-running maps such as Crossing, Farmhouse, Hideout, Hillside, Ministry, Outskirts, Precinct, Refinery, Summit and Tideway, among others, with day and night variants. Forest (Update 1.18) is set on an abandoned airbase with woodland, riverbeds, runways and hangars, so it mixes long sightlines with close fights in the hangars.

New in 1.21 — Hold: a besieged police station, heavily vertical with stairwells, balconies and a helipad. It's close-quarters, so bring a short optic, flashbangs, and incendiaries. It supports Ambush, Defusal, Domination, Firefight, Free For All, Skirmish, TDM, and co-op Checkpoint (both sides), Outpost and Survival. A July 2026 patch fixed a bug where players on different floors of Hold sounded like they were on the same floor.

FAQ

Is Insurgency: Sandstorm still being updated in 2026? Yes. Update 1.21 "Operation: Breachpoint" released 28 May 2026 with the Hold map and two pistols, followed by a minor patch in July 2026.

Is Sandstorm crossplay? Yes. Update 1.17 "Operation: Resurgence" (December 2024) added crossplay so PC, PlayStation and Xbox players can play together. Settings let you choose whether to match with players on other input devices.

What's the best class for beginners? Rifleman. It has the most flexible loadout and no special responsibilities, so you can focus on learning maps and gunplay.

How does fire support work? The Commander calls it, but only when an Observer (with the radio) is nearby.

Why can't I find Ambush or Skirmish? They were moved to the time-limited playlist on 17 November 2025 to concentrate players in core modes.

Is Sandstorm good solo? Co-op against bots is very playable solo or with random players, and Versus works with randoms, but comms massively improve the experience.

How many players per match? Up to 14v14 in PvP according to the store page. Console matches run smaller (the 1.17 notes list 10v10 on console), and community servers on PC may use their own limits.
