Human Fall Flat: Complete Guide
A guide to controlling Bob, solving the physics puzzles, getting through every level, and playing co-op without ruining it for your friends.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Jail update (September 14, 2026), which brought the official level count to 34. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Each mouse button controls one hand. Left click grabs with the left hand and right click with the right. Hold to keep holding.
- Your camera aims your arms. Look up to raise your arms and look down to lower them. Most control problems come from forgetting this.
- To climb: walk up to the ledge, look up, hold both mouse buttons to grab it, then look down while pressing jump to pull yourself up. Doing it as one motion helps.
- You can't die permanently. Falling off the world just respawns you at the last checkpoint. Experiment freely.
- There's almost always more than one solution. The levels are sandboxes. If a "proper" solution feels too hard, a clumsy one usually works too.
- Co-op changes everything. Up to 8 players can play online on PC, and 2 can play local split-screen. Players can carry, throw, and boost each other.
- Free levels keep getting added. The original campaign is short, but post-launch free levels (34 official levels as of September 2026) more than triple the content. Every level is in the level select from the main menu.
- Check the Workshop. Steam Workshop has thousands of community levels, lobbies, and skins.

Core movement techniques
- Climbing a ledge: Look up so both arms point at the top edge, jump, and hold both grabs when your hands touch it. Once you're hanging, swing your view down firmly while holding jump. Bob pulls himself up. If he just dangles, look higher before grabbing.
- Carrying objects: Grab with both hands for heavy items (crates, boards). Look down a little to carry an object at chest height, and look up to lift it overhead.
- Throwing: Hold the object, swing your view up quickly, and let go at the top of the swing.
- Swinging: Hang from a bar or rope with both hands and rock with W/S to build momentum. Let go at the peak of the forward swing.
- Pushing buttons and levers: Grab them and walk or look in the direction they should move. Levers respond to your body's movement, not to a "use" key.
- Wall/box climbing trick: If you hold a box against a wall with one hand, you can often climb up onto it. Players use this to skip intended routes.
How Levels Work
- Checkpoints trigger silently as you progress. After a fall you respawn at the last one.
- Physics objects (boards, crates, cables, and so on) are your toolkit. If something moves when you grab it, it's probably part of a solution.
- Bob's weight matters. Standing on seesaws, platforms, or boats changes how they behave. In co-op, several Bobs can do what one can't.
- Vehicles and machines (boats, catapults, trains, cranes, carts) are fully simulated. Expect them to be clumsy.
Level Guide
Core campaign levels
These are the classic levels at the top of the level select. Play them in order. Each teaches a concept the next ones build on.
| Level |
What it teaches / key idea |
| Mansion |
Tutorial: grabbing, climbing, pressing buttons, pushing boxes. |
| Train |
Moving objects on rails and using a cart to cross gaps. |
| Carry |
Carrying and stacking objects, building bridges with boards. |
| Mountain |
Longer climbs, swinging, simple machines. |
| Demolition |
Wrecking balls and breaking walls. It's the most sandboxy level. |
| Castle |
Catapults and trebuchets for smashing through walls and launching yourself. |
| Water |
Boats, rafts, and floating objects. |
| Power Plant |
Cables and batteries. Plug power in to open doors and lifts. |
| Aztec |
Ancient mechanisms, heavy stone puzzles, and a more complex layout. |
Free post-launch levels
The developers and guest studios have added a long list of free levels; the official tally reached 34 with Jail in September 2026. The Steam announcements include:
Dark, Steam, Ice, Thermal, Factory, Golf, City, Forest, Laboratory, Lumber, Red Rock, Tower, Miniature, Copper World, Port, Underwater, Dockyard, Museum, Hike, Candyland, Test Chamber, Steampunk Party, Viking (featuring Dave the Diver, March 2026), a 10th Anniversary level (July 22, 2026, with updated takes on Mansion, Mountain, Demolition, Castle, Water, Power Plant, and Aztec), and Jail (September 14, 2026, based on the Roblox game Barry's Prison Run).
Tips for the free levels:
- Dark, Steam, and Ice play like the original campaign. Do them first if you want more of the same.
- The later levels are generally larger and more vertical than the originals. Your two-hand climbing needs to be reliable before you try them.
- Guest-designed levels (made by winners of the developers' level-design competitions) vary in style. If one frustrates you, skip it and come back later.
- Viking and Jail are crossover levels with their own themed outfits.
Co-op
- Online: Up to 8 players on PC, hosted from the main menu. Friends join through Steam.
- Local: 2-player split-screen on the same PC. Connect a controller for the second player.
- Boosting: One player stands still while another climbs on top of them. It's the fastest way up tall ledges.
- Carrying players: You can grab and drag teammates who are stuck, or throw them.
- Throwing things at each other is half the game. Agree on whether you're speedrunning or messing around.
Customization
- The customization menu lets you edit Bob's head, upper body, and lower body, plus colors.
- Free themed outfits get added regularly. Recent examples: six historical outfits (Pharaoh, Ancient Queen, Legionnaire, Hanbok, Samurai, Terracotta Soldier) in May 2026, 10th-anniversary skins (Party Hat, Racing Suit, Dessert Dress) in July 2026, and crossover skins with the Viking (Dave the Diver) and Jail (Barry's Prison Run) levels.
- Workshop skins can be subscribed to on Steam and show up in the customization menu.
Steam Workshop
The Workshop is PC-only and one of the best reasons to play on Steam. The community has published more than 5,000 unofficial levels, plus lobbies and skins.
- Playing Workshop levels: Subscribe on the Steam Workshop page, then find the level in the game's Workshop section of the level select. Subscribed lobbies and skins appear in their own menus.
- Picking good ones: Sort by most popular or most subscribed, and read the comments. Many levels are built for co-op and are much harder solo.
- Making your own: Levels are built in Unity with the official Workshop tools. A February 2026 update added assets from the Forest, Hike, and Lumber levels, plus new nodes: a Train Node (objects that follow a path, for lifts, cable cars, and moving platforms), a Glass Shattering Node (breakable containers), and Trigger Volumes with Player ID (for competitive maps and winner displays).
- Multiplayer: If a friend can't load into your Workshop level, have them subscribe to it on the Workshop page too, then rejoin.
Solving a Level When You're Stuck
A short routine that works on almost any puzzle:
- Find what moves. Grab everything nearby. Loose boards, crates, levers, and wheels are almost always there for a reason.
- Look for the exit first. Work backwards from where you need to be: a ledge that's too high needs something to stand on, a gap needs a bridge or a swing.
- Try brute force. Stack objects, throw yourself, or climb something you "shouldn't" be able to. The designers expect alternate routes.
- Reset if something is lost. Falling off the world returns you to the last checkpoint, and many key objects respawn if they drop out of the level.
- Bring a friend. A second player to boost you or hold a lever solves a surprising number of solo headaches.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Grabbing with one hand for a climb. One hand can't pull Bob up. Use both.
- Forgetting that the camera controls your arms. If your arms won't reach, change where you're looking.
- Pulling up too early. Get a solid two-hand grip before you look down.
- Overthinking puzzles. When stuck, try the physical approach: stack junk, throw yourself, or break something.
- Playing co-op with too many people for a first run. Eight players make puzzles trivial and chaotic. Play solo or with two to four for your first time through.
- Ignoring the level select. You don't have to beat everything in order. Jump into the free levels whenever you want.
Advanced Tips
- Speedrun tricks: The community uses techniques like carrying a box to climb walls and momentum-assisted swings to skip whole sections. Watch runs of Mansion or Train to see how far skips go.
- Keep your view steady when carrying. Sudden camera flicks turn objects into projectiles.
- Use the environment to reset stuck objects. Many puzzle objects respawn if they fall out of the world.
- Set up a controller for split-screen before you launch a session, and check the second player's input in the menu.
- Workshop levels vary a lot in quality. Sort by most popular or most subscribed for the best ones.
