Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (H3VR): Complete Guide

A practical guide to H3VR, the long-running VR gun sandbox from RUST LTD.: what each mode is for, how to actually run a gun in VR, how Take & Hold works after the 1.0 changes, and how to set the game up well on your headset.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 120 Patch 3 (1.0) on the main branch, with Patch 4 (Steam Frame support) on the Experimental branch since 26 September 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. It is VR-only and SteamVR-only. The store lists Rift, Rift S, Quest/Quest 2, Vive, Vive Pro, Vive Pro 2, Vive Cosmos and WMR Gen 1/2. Quest players run it through SteamVR (Link, Air Link or a streaming app). Install it on an SSD; load times on a hard drive are painful.
  2. The game left Early Access with 1.0 (Update 120) on 4 July 2026 after roughly ten years and 120+ updates. Patches since then are irregular rather than every Friday.
  3. Pick a movement mode before anything else. The options panel offers several locomotion styles (teleport, dash, arm-swinging and stick-based movement among them). If you get motion sick, start with teleport or dash and turn on snap turning.
  4. Learn the manual of arms on the range first. Guns in H3 are simulated part by part: you insert the magazine, work the bolt or slide, flick the safety, and drop mags with the real release. Spend 20 minutes in a firing range scene before playing combat modes.
  5. Use your quickbelt. Slots on your body hold magazines, grenades and sidearms. Setting it up well is the difference between a smooth reload and fumbling on the floor.
  6. Take & Hold is the main "game". It is a sci-fi roguelite: capture hold points, destroy Encryption targets, earn tokens, spend them on gear. Most players' hours end up here.
  7. Sandbox scenes have an item spawner. In range and sandbox scenes you can spawn nearly anything in the 600+ firearm and 250+ attachment catalogue and save loadouts for later.
  8. Workshop and H3VR Studio are live. Steam Workshop support for user-generated content arrived during the 1.0 run-up, and H3VR Studio (a separate Steam tool) lets you author Take & Hold characters, equipment pools, Sosig outfits and custom gun setups.
  9. Hot dogs are the enemies. The AI "Sosigs" can be shot, stabbed, dismembered and blown up, and they are surprisingly dangerous at range.

What Is in the Game

H3 is a collection of scenes and modes rather than a single campaign. The store page groups them like this:

Mode / area What it is Good for
Gear Up / sandbox Spawn and customise from 600+ firearms and 250+ attachments; save loadouts Learning guns, building "tacti-cool or utterly cursed" setups
Plink & Train Firing and demolitions ranges plus the M.E.A.T.S. target trainer with global leaderboards Aim and reload drills, score chasing
Meat Your Maker Combat against Sosig AI at range or in melee Testing loadouts against real opponents
Wiener's Weird World Exploration of a "meaty 'Murica" with a fragmented story told through different genres Wandering, lore, oddities
Take & Hold Sci-fi action roguelite with control points, Encryption targets, tokens and shops The core replayable loop
Return of the Rotwieners Zombie-meat adventure near the town of Wienerton: scavenge, craft power-ups and explosives, complete quests A longer, more structured campaign
Meat Fortress Arena homage to Team Fortress 2, made with Valve's permission, with meaty parodies of the 9 classes and VR versions of their weapons Silly class-based combat
Wurstwurld Amusement-park puzzle area Puzzles and exploration
Meat Grinder Survival maze Horror-ish survival runs
Holiday events Seasonal modes, including the biennial Meatmas firearm advent calendar Event content

The 1.0 release also added a BBQ Range sandbox scene (a "Sandbox Sosig Party"), a Photo Studio scene with Sosig holo-capture and photo backdrops, and the Grocket Launcher along with a new ammo type, the 67mm Garage Rocket, in HE, Tesla and Starburst loads.

Handling Guns in VR

This is the part that trips up new players. H3 does not have a single "reload" button; you perform each step.

The basic manual of arms

Step What you do Common mistake
Load Grab a magazine from your quickbelt and push it into the magwell Not seating it fully, or grabbing the wrong calibre
Chamber Pull and release the slide, bolt or charging handle Riding the handle forward slowly on some guns; just release it
Safety Flick the selector off safe (usually on the touchpad/stick) Wondering why the trigger does nothing
Fire Trigger Shooting from the hip when the gun has a stock; shoulder it
Drop mag Use the magazine release control while holding the gun Pulling the mag out by hand instead of releasing it
Speed reload Drop, insert, hit the bolt/slide release if the gun locks open Racking the slide when a release would be faster

Every gun is modelled on its real counterpart, so controls genuinely differ. Some pistols lock back on empty, some rifles have a non-reciprocating charging handle, some revolvers need each chamber loaded, and pump or lever actions need the manual cycle after every shot. The developer even fixes these details in patches (for example, a 1.0 patch removed a manually operable slide release from the CZ52 because the real gun does not have one).

Tips for smoother handling

Take & Hold: How It Works

Take & Hold (TNH) is H3's roguelite mode and the part with a competitive scoring community. You are an intruder in a system: you capture control points, then defend them while destroying Encryption targets that grow more complex each phase.

The loop

  1. Start with a character's starting kit. Each Take & Hold character defines what you start with and which equipment pools you can buy from.
  2. Move to a hold point. Sosig patrols roam the map; engage or avoid them.
  3. Take the hold. Once activated, you must destroy the Encryption targets while defending against waves. Encryption types have distinct behaviours (the 1.0 run-up added a new "Polymorphic" Encryption, for example); some split, some move, some need specific parts hit.
  4. Earn tokens. Your performance at the hold pays out tokens.
  5. Spend at supply stations. Stations let you buy weapons and gear from the object constructor, recycle guns you no longer want, and refill ammo with the ammo reloader.
  6. Repeat at harder holds until you win or die.

The 1.0 Take & Hold changes

Update 120 reworked a lot of TNH:

Addition What it does
Blitz A mode focused on attacking points guarded by dense patrols
Rampart Hold defence that teleports you rapidly from tier to tier
Sandbox Mess around freely on any TNH map
Lucky Looter character A "loot goblin" style character that skips the token and purchase systems
Rebuilt TNH menu Better display of more maps and characters
Custom characters Author your own via H3VR Studio and share them

Post-launch scoring patches (Patch 2 on 31 July 2026 and Patch 3 on 29 August 2026) changed how runs are scored at the request of the competitive community: Sosig kill scoring was adjusted, killstreak scoring was removed, the old "Kill Style" bonus became a headshot bonus, and the Breach Speed bonus was removed because it never worked as intended. If you are chasing leaderboards, older score strategies built around killstreaks no longer apply.

Take & Hold tips

Return of the Rotwieners and Other Modes

Return of the Rotwieners starts outside Wienerton, where a plague of rotten undead meat has hit the townsfolk of the Honey Hamlet. You scavenge weapons, craft power-ups and explosives, and complete quests to uncover the cause of the outbreak. Treat ammo as scarce, melee weak enemies, and save explosives for groups.

Meat Fortress gives you TF2-style class kits in VR. The classes are meaty parodies of the original nine, with VR versions of the original weapon set plus over a dozen original TF2-style creations.

Plink & Train is where to build skill. The M.E.A.T.S. trainer scores reaction time and accuracy and has global leaderboards, so it doubles as a warm-up routine before Take & Hold.

Creation Tools: Workshop, Studio and Gameplanner

The 1.0 update deliberately bundled breaking changes for modders into one release. If you used older code mods (the community has long used mod loaders and a Thunderstore-based ecosystem), expect many to need updating for Update 120. Try the official Workshop content first; it is the supported path now.

FAQ

Is H3VR out of Early Access? Yes. Version 1.0 (Update 120) launched on 4 July 2026 after about ten years in Early Access.

Can I play without a VR headset? No. It is a SteamVR-only VR game.

Does it work on Quest? Yes, through SteamVR on a PC (Link, Air Link or a streaming app). It is not a standalone Quest app.

Does it support the Steam Frame? Support arrived on the Experimental branch in Update 120 Patch 4 on 26 September 2026, with a main-branch release planned for the following week pending testing. It is meant to work both streamed from PC and natively.

Why don't my achievements show progress? Update 120 Patch 1 fixed a stats bug. "Do X of Y" achievements not completed in a single session since 4 July have to be progressed again from the internal count, and Steam will not show progress until you pass your previous highest number.

How do I get custom content? Subscribe on the Steam Workshop, or build your own in H3VR Studio (Take & Hold characters, equipment pools, Sosig outfits, saved guns).

Is there multiplayer? The official game is a single-player experience. The competitive side is mostly Take & Hold score-chasing on leaderboards and community tournaments.
