# HITMAN World of Assassination: Complete Guide

How to get good at HITMAN World of Assassination (WoA): how the sandbox systems work, how to earn Silent Assassin ratings, which locations to play first, how to unlock gear through Mastery, and a full Freelancer primer, plus what's live in the current season.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the Season of the Herbalist (patch 3.280, 26 August 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## What's Live Right Now (September 2026)

- **Season of the Herbalist** is the current season (patch 3.280, 26 August 2026). Its headline was **The Herbalist ft. Snoop Dogg**, a celebrity Elusive Target that was **free to play from 27 August to 26 September 2026**. That free window has now closed.
- **The Herbalist Pack** (paid DLC) permanently adds **The Visionary**, a two-level Arcade contract featuring The Herbalist, and **The Herbalist Assignment**, a Special Assignment with 16 challenges, plus themed cosmetics.
- **The Getaway Pack** (15 September 2026) adds holiday-themed outfits, weapons, gear and Freelancer Safehouse cosmetics.
- Earlier in 2026: **Season of The Wizard** (June 2026), a protection-style mission where you stop boxer-turned-entrepreneur Taylor "The Wizard" Graves from killing tech CEO Tim Quinn; **The Drop ft. Dimitri Vegas** returned (July); and **Eminem vs. Slim Shady** ("The Reflection" Elusive Target) ran until 23 August.
- Celebrity Elusive Targets rotate and come back, so if you missed one, keep an eye on the official roadmap.

## Quick Start

1. **Play the Prologue and Paris first.** The ICA Facility tutorial teaches disguises, distractions and accidents. Paris is the model for every later level.
2. **Follow a Mission Story on your first run.** Mission Stories (tracked from the menu) lead you step by step to a creative kill. They show you how a level "works" without spoiling everything.
3. **Replay levels. That's the game.** Each location has Mastery levels that unlock new starting locations, disguises, smuggled-item spots and gear. Your second and third runs are where HITMAN starts to click.
4. **Use Instinct constantly.** It shows targets, guards, items and enforcers through walls.
5. **Enforcers can see through your disguise.** NPCs with a white dot over them in Instinct can recognise your disguise. Avoid them or pick a different outfit.
6. **Hide bodies.** Unconscious and dead bodies go in containers (crates, closets, dumpsters). Found bodies raise alarms and ruin your rating.
7. **Save often on Casual/Professional.** You can save anywhere on these difficulties. Master difficulty limits you to one save.
8. **The coin is your best tool.** Throw it to lure a single guard to a quiet spot, subdue him, take the outfit.

## Core Systems

### Disguises and Trespassing

- Every area has a list of disguises that let you be there. Stepping into an area without the right outfit makes you **trespassing**, and anyone who spots you gets suspicious fast.
- **Enforcers** for a disguise are the NPCs who can see through it (for example, a head chef for kitchen staff). Everyone else ignores you.
- **Blending in** (using a work station, e.g. sweeping, wiping a bar) makes you almost invisible to enforcers nearby.
- **Suit Only** means finishing a mission without changing clothes. It's a Mastery and challenge goal, not a requirement.

### Suspicion and Alarm States

| State | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Suspicious (white/yellow icon) | Someone is watching you | Walk away, break line of sight |
| Searching | Guards investigate | Hide or blend; they'll give up |
| Compromised | Your current disguise is burnt | Change clothes |
| Combat | Guards are shooting | Run, hide, change disguise, or reload |

### Distractions and Accidents

- **Distractions:** coins, radios, phones, fuse boxes, sprinklers. Guards walk over, and you can take them out one at a time.
- **Accidents:** electrocution on puddles, falling objects (chandeliers, lights), pushes off ledges, poisoning food or drinks. Accidents don't set off full alerts and count toward Silent Assassin.
- **Emetic poison** makes a target run to a bathroom or bin to vomit, where you can drown or subdue them alone. Lethal poison kills outright.

### Silent Assassin Rating

To get the top "Silent Assassin" rating on a mission:

- Kill only your targets. Non-target deaths (even accidents) lose it.
- No one can find a body, including targets that were killed in a way that exposes them (accidents are fine).
- Don't get spotted during a crime (subduing, killing, trespassing in a restricted area with someone watching).
- **Delete security footage.** Cameras record you; find the security room's evidence recorder and destroy or take it.
- Subdued (knocked-out) NPCs are allowed, as long as they're hidden or not found by others.

## Locations

WoA includes everything from HITMAN (2016), HITMAN 2 and HITMAN 3 in one game:

| Game | Locations |
|---|---|
| HITMAN (2016) | ICA Facility (Prologue), Paris, Sapienza, Marrakesh, Bangkok, Colorado, Hokkaido |
| HITMAN 2 | Hawke's Bay, Miami, Santa Fortuna, Mumbai, Whittleton Creek, Isle of Sgàil, New York, Haven Island |
| HITMAN 3 | Dubai, Dartmoor, Berlin, Chongqing, Mendoza, Carpathian Mountains |
| Free addition | Ambrose Island (July 2022) |

**Recommended first playthrough order:** Just play them in campaign order. If you want the best levels first: **Paris → Sapienza → Hokkaido → Miami → Dartmoor → Berlin**. Sapienza is the most-replayed sandbox in the series.

**Tips for standout levels:**

- **Sapienza:** the virus lab needs a lab disguise; the golf ball and the cannon are memorable accident kills.
- **Miami:** sabotaging the race car and wearing the Flamingo mascot suit are classic routes.
- **Dartmoor:** play the "Private Investigator" story for a full murder-mystery mission.
- **Berlin:** you don't know who your targets are. Use Instinct, eavesdrop on agent conversations and watch for ICA agent behaviour.
- **Carpathian Mountains:** a linear, story-driven train mission, much less of a sandbox than the rest. It's short, so don't worry.

## Mastery and Unlocks

- Each location has its own Mastery track. Completing challenges (feats, assassinations, discoveries) earns XP toward it.
- Mastery unlocks starting locations, agency pickups (items placed in the level), smuggled-item locations, and gear you can bring anywhere: silenced pistols, poison syringes, remote explosives, lockpicks, crowbars, keycard hackers, and more.
- Your **player level** (profile) goes up with XP from everything you do and unlocks cosmetics.
- **Useful early unlocks to aim for:** a silenced pistol (the ICA19 Silverballer variants), lethal and emetic poison syringes, and a lockpick. These three cover most situations.

## Game Modes

| Mode | What it is |
|---|---|
| Campaign missions | Story missions in every location |
| Mission Stories | Guided kill routes within each location |
| Contracts | Player-made hits on any NPC with custom rules |
| Escalations | Multi-stage missions that add a new rule or complication each stage |
| Elusive Targets | Time-limited single-attempt targets |
| Elusive Target Arcade | Replay retired Elusive Targets in themed chains (a failed attempt locks the arcade for a while) |
| Sniper Assassin | Stationary sniper maps: Himmelstein, Hantu Port, Siberia |
| Freelancer | Roguelike campaign against crime syndicates |

**Difficulty:** Casual (fewer guards, helpful), Professional (standard), and Master (more guards, more enforcers, one save per mission). Master is where Silent Assassin runs are hardest.

## Freelancer Mode

Freelancer is a roguelike mode that runs from your **Safehouse**, a hub you decorate and use as a gear room.

- **Campaigns:** A full run means taking down **four crime syndicate leaders**. For each syndicate you first clear contract missions against lower-ranking members to lure the leader out; each syndicate type rewards a particular playstyle.
- **Showdown:** once a leader is lured out, Diana gives you four physical and three behavioural traits, and you use the **suspect camera** plus observation to pick the leader out of a group of suspects.
- **No saving:** you can't save during Freelancer missions, so every mistake sticks.
- **Merces** is the currency. You earn it from missions, killing Couriers and opening safes, and spend it on weapons and gear for upcoming operations.
- **Failure costs:** failing a mission loses all the items you had equipped and half your Merces, and the syndicates tighten security on the map. **Dying or failing a Showdown resets the whole campaign.** Weapons you've stored in the Safehouse collection stay.
- **Safehouse:** it expands as your Freelancer Mastery rises, and you can store certain collected weapons there for future runs.
- **Prestige Objectives** are optional goals on each mission that pay extra Merces and XP.
- **Supplier and vendor tip:** Stock up on cheap poison and lockpicks early; they cover most mission types.
- **Harder ruleset:** IOI has added a Hardcore option for Freelancer with stricter rules. Try it only once standard campaigns feel easy.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Rushing the target on the first run.** You'll get more from exploring, listening to conversations and learning routes than from a quick kill.
- **Leaving cameras.** A great run with no bodies found still loses Silent Assassin if the footage survives.
- **Hiding bodies in full containers.** Each container fits one or two bodies. Check the prompt; if it isn't there, the container is full.
- **Walking past enforcers.** They're the only people who see through a disguise. Instinct marks them.
- **Using explosives or guns for Silent Assassin runs.** Loud kills trigger evacuations and usually witnesses.
- **Ignoring Mastery.** Better starting locations and smuggled items make hard challenges much easier.

## Advanced Tips

- **Subdue from behind after a distraction.** Drop a coin, stand in cover next to where the guard will look, and subdue him while his back is turned.
- **Throw items to knock people out.** A thrown bottle, can or wrench knocks out anyone it hits in the head. It's a silent, zero-ammo takedown.
- **Break necks on unsuspecting guards in a hidden spot.** Subdue (non-lethal) is safer: it doesn't count as a kill and still lets you take clothes.
- **Poison drinks, not food, for targets on a route.** Most targets have a drink point in their loop.
- **Learn the "suit only" routes in Sapienza and Hokkaido.** They teach you how to move through restricted areas using distractions instead of disguises.
- **Elusive Targets:** read the briefing carefully. They often have one clear weakness (a food allergy, a habit) that gives an accident kill.
- **Showdown suspect tip (Freelancer):** Start checking tells as soon as you can see suspects. The suspect camera lets you check physical traits from a distance, which is safer than walking up to every suspect.

## FAQ

**Do I need to buy HITMAN 1 and 2 separately?**
No. HITMAN World of Assassination includes all three games' locations. Separate DLC covers extras like the Seven Deadly Sins packs and the celebrity Elusive Target packs.

**Is The Herbalist ft. Snoop Dogg still free?**
No. The free window ran from 27 August to 26 September 2026. The Herbalist Pack DLC gives permanent access to The Visionary Arcade contract and The Herbalist Assignment.

**How do I play Elusive Targets I missed?**
Use the Elusive Target Arcade, which lets you replay retired Elusive Targets in themed chains. Celebrity ETs sometimes come back as limited-time missions too.

**What's the best order for Freelancer?**
Play the base game on at least one location per region first. Freelancer assumes you know the maps, since it randomises targets across them.

**How do I get Silent Assassin?**
Only kill targets, don't get spotted committing a crime, leave no bodies found, and destroy any camera footage.

**Is Freelancer free?**
Freelancer is part of WoA for owners of the full game.

**Which difficulty should I pick?**
Professional for your first runs. Casual if you want a relaxed learning run; Master once you know a map.
