Heroes of Might & Magic III - HD Edition: Complete Guide

A strategy guide to the Steam HD Edition of the 1999 classic: what the HD Edition does and does not include, economy rules of thumb, town-by-town notes, hero skills and spells worth chasing, combat fundamentals, and the campaign outline.

Researched September 2026 — current as of HD Edition Update #4 (the last patch, 2015). The game itself does not change; check the linked sources for series news.

Know what you bought: the HD Edition contains only the original game, The Restoration of Erathia. It does not include the Armageddon's Blade or Shadow of Death expansions: no Conflux town, no combination artifacts, and no random map generator. Most of the community's popular mods (such as Horn of the Abyss) target the Complete edition sold elsewhere, not the HD Edition.

Quick Start

  1. Build the Town Hall line early. Gold is the bottleneck for almost everything. A Capitol pays for itself fast.
  2. Upgrade the Fort to a Castle in your main town. Creature growth goes up by half with a Citadel and doubles with a Castle.
  3. Buy a second (and third) hero. Extra heroes pick up resources, flag mines and ferry troops to the main hero. One big army and several scouts is the classic setup.
  4. Flag mines as soon as possible. Wood and ore first, then the rare resource your town needs.
  5. Visit stat and skill buildings on the adventure map with your main hero.
  6. Recruit every week. Creature dwellings refill on the first day of each week.
  7. Don't overextend your main hero. Losing your main army in week 2 usually loses the game.
  8. Use the Mage Guild. Early Slow, Haste or Bless decides many fights.

HD Edition Specifics

Economy

Resources

Resource Main use
Gold Everything; buildings and creatures
Wood, Ore Most buildings
Mercury, Sulfur, Crystal, Gems Rare resources for high-level buildings and some creatures; each town favours particular ones

Income buildings

Building Gold per day
Village Hall 500
Town Hall 1,000
City Hall 2,000
Capitol 4,000 (one per player; requires a Castle in that town)

Marketplace lets you trade resources; more marketplaces improve the rates. The Resource Silo adds a daily trickle of the town's key resources.

Build order rule of thumb (main town)

  1. Days 1-3: whatever gives you a strong week-1 army (usually tier 1-3 dwellings and a Town Hall).
  2. Build a City Hall as soon as the requirements are met.
  3. Citadel, then Castle, then Capitol.
  4. Your top-tier dwelling and its upgrade once the economy can afford it.
  5. The Mage Guild levels your main hero's magic school needs.

Don't build everything. A town full of unused buildings is gold not spent on creatures.

Towns

Town Alignment Top creature (upgraded) Playstyle
Castle Good Archangel Solid, well-rounded; Archangels resurrect
Rampart Good Gold Dragon Defensive, strong mid-tiers; dragons
Tower Good Titan Magic-heavy; strong ranged units
Inferno Evil Arch Devil Fast, tricky; weaker late game
Necropolis Evil Ghost Dragon Necromancy snowball: raises Skeletons from the dead
Dungeon Evil Black Dragon Strong magic heroes; Black Dragons are immune to spells
Stronghold Neutral Ancient Behemoth Might-heavy, cheap units, weak magic
Fortress Neutral Chaos Hydra Tough, slow, defensive

Quick town notes

Heroes

Primary stats

Attack, Defense, Spell Power and Knowledge. Might heroes (Knights, Barbarians and so on) favour Attack and Defense; magic heroes favour Spell Power and Knowledge.

Secondary skills worth taking

Skill Why
Logistics More movement every day; the single biggest adventure-map skill
Earth Magic Slow at higher mastery, Town Portal, Resurrection, Implosion
Air Magic Haste, Chain Lightning, Dimension Door, Fly
Wisdom Needed to learn higher-level spells
Offense, Armorer Straight combat value for might heroes
Leadership, Luck Morale and luck swings in every fight
Necromancy Mandatory for Necropolis heroes
Pathfinding Big if your map has rough terrain

Often weak: Eagle Eye, Navigation (unless the map is water), Scholar, First Aid and Learning on your main hero. Save your eight skill slots for combat and movement.

FAQ

Does the HD Edition include Armageddon's Blade or Shadow of Death? No. It is only The Restoration of Erathia.

Is there a random map generator? Not in the HD Edition. It came with Shadow of Death, which isn't included.

Can I use Horn of the Abyss or the HD Mod? Those community projects are built for the Complete edition, not the Steam HD Edition. The HD Edition could not include the expansions because their source code was lost, and many reviewers recommend buying the Complete edition (sold on GOG) and adding the community HD Mod instead if you want the expansions, random maps and widescreen together.

Is multiplayer still working? The HD Edition has a Steamworks lobby for online play and local hotseat.

What's the best town for beginners? Castle is the most forgiving. Necropolis is the most snowball-friendly once you understand Necromancy.

Is there a new Heroes game? Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era entered Early Access on 30 April 2026. The HD Edition's news feed also posted an announcement titled "Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake" on 26 August 2026.
